  • In today's video, I am testing out my new Strathmore Toned Grey Mixed Media Paper that I bought a couple of months ago! Since I have already tried the Strathmore Toned Tan and Toned Blue Mixed Media Papers, I already had a feel for this paper but just wanted to see how the tone would look against charcoal pencils.
    The reference photo of the seagull used for the artwork is actually a reference I took myself on my recent beach trip to the central coast in California! If you would like to see more of the references I took or see how my trip went, you can check that out down below. I will link other relevant videos down below also!

    I guess I can’t shake the bird subject habit😄 if you guys don’t live near the beach, seagulls are quite loud, terrible and steal your food and all that. But they do make a good subject!

    I freehand a lot more nowadays as I am trying hard to really improve my drawing skills, and it’s the only way to do it. It definitely gets easier and more natural over time. Love your seagull, and the white and black pencils on the toned paper. Starting with a mid tone is always so much fun! 😊

      That’s a good idea and helps to work out your drawing muscles! Thanh you❤️ I’m glad you liked my newest addition to what I like to call the bird family of artwork😂

    I do love your drawing. I don't know enough about what seagulls should look like to even know that the neck might be too short, so no problem there. 😊 I would much rather work with charcoal in pencil-form than the type that I have to touch all over - yuck, lol. I have a few Strathmore toned sketchbooks in various colors, but I haven't tried them more than once. I'll be getting to another one in the next few months, though, so it's fun to have your take on them to be rattling around in my brain while I'm using it. Thanks, Alexis; another fun video to watch!

      In a classroom setting with large tables and a nearby sink, there is nothing compared to using a messy stick of vine charcoal. I noticed my use of it expired almost immediately when I no longer had that setting. You need a proper studio dedicated just to messy charcoal or else you'll find it all over your other paintings and drawings, let alone your clothes, hands, face, desk, and floor!

      @AlexisCassandraArt  Před rokem +1

      Yes I agree that this is a way better alternative to charcoal sticks! I’m not so good with charcoal sticks😂 it’ll be fun to see you use the toned paper! It really feels different working with it compared to white paper. Thank you for watching😊❤️

      @@travisnobleart oh yes, just like I need a proper studio to try oil paints one day as well🥴 until then I’ll be sticking to less messy media

    Just love your videos. Only recently found your channel and am now watching all your older videos. You do a wonderful job with not only your artistic talents but your articulation of products 😎

    The iconic bird from your vlog 🐦✨👑! I feel the same way- The shading and coloring part is my favorite too. I think the toned gray paper looks so nice with the charcoal 🙌🏻! I like experimenting with charcoal- but wish it wasn’t so messy. The white shows up really good on the gray 🤍. Oooo that eraser sounds nice! I need one for tiny details. Yaaaaas a rooster would be fun to see your draw 🐔! Amazing job 👏🏻💖

      At this point I should name the bird. Maybe I’ll go with Edward or something😂 glad you like the toned paper!! I think you’d like these cretacolor charcoal pencils since they really aren’t messy! I’ll get to the rooster soon👀

      Thank you! I had fun making it :) seagulls are annoying but I like how this one is so calm just looking out to the sea!

      Also, I need to draw more. Whether using a graphite pencil or charcoal pencil, it’s doesn’t matter, I need more drawing practice.

      I should be a bird expert by now. I could make a bird book with the amount of birds I’ve drawn🥴 and thank you! Drawing is like a muscle, so it’s always good to practice but I also find it’s like riding a bike where you never really forget either

    Hi Alexis, what are your thoughts on this paper surface when comparing it to the regular Strathmore grey toned 80lb sketch book? Is it the same smoothness?

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  Před 7 měsíci

      I find the mixed media always to be slightly smoother, but maybe its just me!

      @@AlexisCassandraArt Sorry to make a stink of it! I should probably make video reviews and take my chances that way instead of making lengthy comments! I've had a few lengthy innocent comments disappear on me. I think the art community might be more subject to this kind of saloon kicking (to avoid saying another word) because the words we use and the things we talk about are a little beyond the norm!

    • @AlexisCassandraArt
      @AlexisCassandraArt  Před rokem

      Grid method is good too! It helps to really break everything down. I think freehanding can be a pain sometimes which is why I often skip it😂
