    I find bringing in human relationships to Doctor Who just makes it pedestrian and dull it's always been a problem since they brought the show back. The doctor is no longer other worldly.

      That’s what hamstrung the Tennant period. It was interesting to see the effect of time travel on the home life of the companions, but beyond that it lessens the character.

      Yup this is why RTD has to go so hard in the other direction to prove his allegiance. Moffat had similar accusations with his portrayal of Amy as she was often sexualised and with the whiteness of the main cast once the show hit America. This lead to Moffat portraying London 200 years ago as not only being more diverse but suggesting to his black lesbian companion that it's white people who are keeping this a secret from modern people. It's one thing to show the world how you want to see it but to blame the differences on some kind of faux-racism is frankly sickening.

    "Rogue" could have been a half decent commentary on cultural appropriation/Blackface/Slumming it/Hipsterism. But that would require the makers to shine a light on themselves. Much easier to point judgemental fingers at everybody else and accuse everybody else of living in a bubble.

  • @mikec32001

    RTD hasn’t just shat the Doctor Who bed, he’s given a once mysterious character a catastrophic prolapse. That Kylie scene was gut-churning to behold. And if the Doctor is newly-gay, why is he suddenly so behaving like he’s been cruising down Old Compton St all his lives?

    • @TheDarrenLock
      @TheDarrenLock  Před 4 dny +1

      Yeah, good point. At least with Whittaker's relationship with Yaz with was explored with a tentative naïveté you'd expect from someone who is alien and not used to that sort of thing. Whereas this new Doctor is a stereotypical Earth homosexual who seems to be gagging for cock...all...the...time... (Which makes his relationship in this episode ridiculous as really they'd be shtumping in the bushes rather than trying to save the day - because cock comes first!)

  • @EdParnellReads

    All people want is good stories. That's all. Doesn't matter about the orientation, colour or any other demographic. a decent writer would not need to emphasise all that. A good writer tells stories. There are no good stories here. And where the writing peaks, it goes nowhere.

    Russell T Davis ruined the Doctor when he humanised him with Tennant. I prefer the Doctor being an outsider who isn’t interested in copying human behaviour. It seems that Russell T Davis hates the Doctor’s characterisation and always wanted to change it. The writing this season has been atrocious and this certainly hasn’t helped.

    Really good review. Same here. Doctor Who has gone off the edge. For awhile now, to be honest.
    Heh, the thing you said about deliberately trying to destroy the franchise. Sad we can't figure out if that is the case or that they're actually genuine in thinking it's "good." It's a mad world.

    • @TheDarrenLock
      @TheDarrenLock  Před 25 dny

      It’s because we’ve moved from telling a good, engaging story into shoe-horning whatever personal agenda the showrunner has into the narrative. This half-arsed attempt at story telling just breaks franchises - we’ve seen that with Disney & Marvel. They won’t stop until everything is broken and unwanted by the mass market - so they are deliberately aiming to create niche programmes with very limited appeal, which is counter intuitive to what making mainstream entertainment was all about! 🙄

      It is baffling, though I have suspicions that it's intentional, but where it all pans out eventually, dunno for sure. Definitely proving to be a non-winning strategy.

    HATED IT. It wasn't The Worst episode yet- that was "Dot & Bubble"- but I've got the same deja vu miasma I got during the torturing of the brilliant actor Peter Capaldi's turn of the Doctor. It's like RTD writes to make the worst experience for the actors & the audience. "BOOM" was the single show this season that gave the actors a chance to do a good show. I'm still a believer in Doctor Who. I don't believe in Russell T Davies.

    My biggest problem was a flashback to a conversation with Ruby's mother about "Can you keep her safe?". Yeah... What episode was that from again? Was it the Xmas special*? Because flashbacks to conversations the audience never even saw the first time around is pretty shoddy writing. I'll accept anything this show does except flashbacks to stuff we didn't even see the first time around.

    Doctor Who is a fantasy adventure children's TV show. As we know, children love Strictly and Bridgerton and passive-agressive salvos in the culture war. All kiddies want from their fantasy adventure shows is twee revisionist period drama and the screechy insincerity of Queer culture. RTD knows what the children like.

    The 15th Doctor is selfish and reckless. That might have been an interesting way to go with the character but he's also a self-righteous blubberer. All through this run, he's been careless, put Ruby in extreme peril and/or abandoned her. What a nobber. But the actor portraying this selfish brat can cry on cue so that's deep and meaningful, right? According to the marvel hacks RTD hired to pen this episode, Regency Bath is far less racist and homophobic than the present day and so much less racist and homophobic than the Funtime future. The sad truth is, men were still being hanged for homosexuality in England well into the 1850s - and that's even without the racial dimension in the mix. This episode was self-indulgent garbage. It's all fan-service references and culturewar jibes at the expense of telling a coherent story. Oh look he can sing (badly) and dance (badly) and be all #BraveandStunning so who needs anything resembling a plot? Who n eeds to appeal to an audience beyond RTD's own bubble?
