As much as I enjoyed using Twitter, it instilled a lot of terrible social media habits in me that I struggle with to this day. Elon's slow decay of the platform eventually motivated my decision to leave. I won't stop calling it Twitter, but I'm not really a Twitter user anymore.

I've been watching a number of your videos today, starting with your CZcams ones. I've also been thinking a lot about the same issues: How to make a living from this platform. And I just had a thought when I was watching this one. At the beginning, you start of by saying something really surprising and interesting: perhaps Musk was right to rename twitter. And then immediately you switch to: no, this was only a joke. But, you know, for a moment there I thought: well, THAT would have been a video that would have blown up. If you had actually argued for the surprising thesis instead of retreating to the commonplace. I'm saying this mainly to myself, as a reminder: perhaps one of the ways to more views would be to just be more surprising, more controversial, more daring with one's opinions. Retreating from a strong hook to a boring, commonplace position clearly is not a recipe for virality. And although I'm doing the same on my channel, seeing this here, done by someone else, I could for the first time see it so clearly: the moment you went back from that hook, I lost interest in the video. We should really be more daring to put forward surprising, stunning, amazing claims. To stay out of the crowd of the expected and predictable. Thanks for that insight!
I know what you’re saying, but it helps if you actually feel like the contrarian position is true or at least highly plausible. I truly think renaming Twitter was an awful choice, and maybe you could make the case that it’s such an obvious, commonly held belief, that I didn’t need to make a video about it but at’s always a fine line. At the end of the day I’m a strong believer in common sense and consensus that forms within society so if anything I’m more likely to try to debunk radical positions, conspiracy theories, or what I’d call something like “performative contrarianism”. But definitely think if you have a contrary position with a strong argument for it, it’s for sure a type of content that will tend to do well provided it’s delivered in a compelling package.
@@coreyjcampbell I'm professionally a philosopher, so we tend to be more flexible about what is true or plausible :) I'm often practicing with the students defending crazy positions, and it's amazing how easy it is to find arguments in favour of almost anything. I agree with your point that consensus and common sense are better for society, but perhaps there's also a value in "performative contrarianism," especially when it is directed against some of the questionable "truths" that society wants us to embrace without good justification -- like "capitalism is a good idea" to mention a very soft and easy to attack one, but there are more controversial positions that are also perfectly sane and actually worthy of defending. To some extent, keeping dissent alive is also a service to society and to democracy, especially in an age where the willingness to be fair to one's opponents and to respect dissenting opinions is replaced by the instinct to cancel whoever disagrees with one's own opinion. Anyway, it was just a thought about what might be a way to grow one's CZcams channel, I didn't mean my comment to apply directly to the matter of X/Twitter. One could pick contrarian positions one is comfortable with. Thanks!
As a conservative, I’m fine with calling it X. Twitter was filled with all sorts of degenerates and I have hope for Elon’s vision, even if it is ambitious.
