  • I've always been curious about the 3rd generation "Fox Body" Mustang 5.0, as it's one of very few Mustangs to weigh in under 3000 lbs with a V8. Let's see if it's any good to drive on a back road.
1991 Ford Mustang LX Mod List:
    225 hp, 300 lb-ft, less than 2,900 lbs
    3.27 LSD
Full exhaust, throttle body, MAF, shifter
Maximum motorsports braces, panhard bar, suspension
Bilstein HDs with front coilover conversion
Braided brake lines, 01 GT brakes, new rotors with HPS pads
Rear mount battery, Corbeau seats, no rear interior
    Firestone Indy 500 tires 245/45R/17

Also the steering on this car for the 1991 model year is a 20:1 ratio rack. 1987 to 1989 is 15:1 which provides more feedback and has a quicker turning lock to lock, especially for the road twistees. I can tell that the factory rubber steering rack bushings in this car need to be replaced, and that is why you are finding so much play in the steering. In my 1989 coupe I replaced my steering rack and added Maximum Motorsport solid rack bushings, as well as a Maximum Motorsports solid steering shaft. The steering shaft eliminates the rag joint in the shaft and the solid bushings, as well as a new steering pump, completely fixed and eliminated any steering play AND gave excellent feedback as to road feel and communication from the front tires!!!!

This car has the LMR 15:1 steering rack, MM solid rack bushings, and MM steering shaft. I might prefer a flaming river manual rack but would have a difficult time routing the serpentine belt. Power steering is good for day to day use cases but manual steering is the way

I still remember when I was shopping for my first car in '96, I really wanted a Fox body. Went to Downtown Ford in Sacramento, and they had DOZENS of used former Highway Patrol 5.0's repainted in all sorts of wild colors sitting on the lot... Didn't get one even though they were only like $6k each. That was double what my first car allowance was at the time lol

4.10 gear would really wake it up a bit and the solid axle rear probably not the best bumpy canyon rear end.. There are a few companies who make real handling focused upgrades for the chassis (Griggs, Maximum Motorsports, etc). What's wild is the FOX chassis went from 1978 all the way to 2004 and there are lots of sleeper fairmonts, zephyrs, thunderbirds that all share the same underpinnings. Later IRS from New Edge Mustang Cobras can be bolted in to any of these fox chassis cars, there are double wishbones conversions for the front now. and you can stuff 315 section width tires all around on them with infinitely supported powerplant swap options.

Just drove my 91 to work this morning. Always puts a smile on my face. Mostly stock. Few mods are 3.73 rear gears, Hurst Ford Performance shifter, BBK off road H-pipe, Flowmaster mufflers. Stifflers sub-frame connectors, lowered with 275 tires in the rear. Even has cold AC if I need it.
All the torque is available in lower rpm range. Shifting at 3k rpm is more than enough to get ahead of most traffic or drivers. From a stop or 5 mph roll it will smoke both the rear tires at will.

S-trim whine on a cammed 302 is so classic of a sound to me, if I had a Fox again, that’s 100% the way I go every time. I had to leave my car running because of a hot start problem (long tube headers, big/old starter), so I went into a gas station, could hear he car camming outside, and the whine of the blower surges with the cam lope, such a cool cacophony of sounds.

They do have solid rear axle, “multi link” maybe just means how there is a lower and upper control arm on each side to locate the axle assembly, along with standard shocks for up/down damping and an additional pair of “quad shocks” that are at an angle and most people remove once they are upping hp.

We had the Ford dealer here with large story parking garage. One entire floor was fox Mustangs-maybe 75 of them. It was a dream. My brother and I both bought them for peanuts as they were practically giving them away. I got a '90 red GT and my brother got a White LX 5.0. I think we both had car payments in the $270 a month range. As high schoolers we could easily afford them bussing tables at the local restaurant. Good times and great memories from back then, but the cars were a bit flawed where Ford kept the price down impacting handling and especially braking.

  • @emperorbobarino

All solid axles will get unsettled when going through uneven suspension motion, the magnitude of this is relative to the severity of the disparity of the travel in the suspension as well as the speed at which it occurs (axle motion/suspension travel speed [yes, vehicle speed is the primary cause of this, but not the sole cause].) Panhard/Track bars are a good and simple axle centering device, but due to the nature of their operation they experience sagitta. Which means that the axle cannot realistically stay perfectly centered throughout it's travel. This fact means that it will amplify the unsettling experienced during uneven travel. This is why triangulated 4 link, or Watts link suspension offers the best results as both configurations yield near zero side to side movement of the axle through out it's travel. Solid axles highly advantageous in many situations. Going hard on shitty pavement is not one of them. However, should the owner invest in a Watts link (and possibly better shocks Bils are good, but better exists) will transform the handling of the car.

Sophisticated as a brick but loads of fun. Drove one in Boston for a year and a half.
Rear end skip actually became predictable with time.
Also, absolutely the worst car to drive on snow. Meaning it was a MUST to drive on snow!!
There was a turn near the entrance to MIT where I would - very irresponsibly - do a 450degree turn
when there was snow (meaning a full 360 followed by a 90 degree spin).
Harvard sq. I would wave to the police and shout "If I stop I'll get stuck" as a rolled through a red light.
    Miracle I never got arrested.
Today I drive ultra- responsively (and boring) in my Corolla but I still dream of the sound of that Mustang engine.

Actually there are no rare parts for these cars!!! There is indeed a HUGE aftermarket support with OEM correct made reproduction parts. Also, you are hearing and feeling a lot of NVH as the headliner and most of the rear interior such as the seats and carpeting and sound deadening materials, are out of the car, which would help dampen a lot of the road noise you are hearing......
