They Don't Care About Us is a song that everyone in the world should hear at least once before they die. This song is connected to my personal life in so many ways that I can't put into words how much this song means to me. The sad thing about this song is that everything Michael said are undeniable truths, truths that happened in 1995 and are still happening today in 2023, unfortunately maybe forever 😔 Anyway... Donovan and Blenda as always you both gave us an amazing reaction Thank you guys, I can't wait for the Brazil version 😍 Love you both and Take care! ❤️💖
“They Don’t Care About Us” ~ The meaning of the song in Michael’s words. “The song is in fact about the pain of prejudice and hate and is a way to draw attention to social and political problems. I am the voice of the accused and the attacked. I am the voice of everyone. I am the skinhead, I am the Jew, I am the Black Man, I am the White Man. I am not the one who was attacking. It is about the injustices to young people and how the system can wrongfully accuse them.” Speaking on the Short Film/Music Video it was directed by Spike Lee. Asked why he chose Lee to direct the video, MJ responded, "'They Don't Care About Us' has an edge, and Spike Lee had approached me. It's a public awareness song and that's what he is all about. It's a protest kind of song ... and I think he was perfect for it". This was the first time MJ made two Short Films for a single. This first version was filmed in a prison with cell mates; in the video Jackson is seen handcuffed. It also contains real footage of police attacking African Americans (including the beating of Rodney King), the military crackdown of the protests in the Tiananmen Square, the Ku Klux Klan, war crimes, genocide, execution, martial law, and other human rights abuses/inhuman acts. (In This Day And Age We Need This Man The Most Now Than Ever Before Long Live The King Of Music Michael Joseph Jackson Truly The Greatest Music Artist To Ever Live Period!🙌🏽👑❤️💕✨💯(I own the copy of the HIStory album that doesn’t censor the words “Jew” or “Kike” also the fact they accused MJ of being racist when he was clearly standing in solidarity with everyone just shows you how cruel the world can really be at times and how cruel they were to him as a individual they never really treated MJ human they truly treated him inhumane.)
Welcome back you two, i hope youre both well! :) Its so depressing, angering and upsetting that the song is as relevant today and still hits as hard as it does, but its also a sign of how ageless Michaels art is that musically, lyrically and visually the song and the video have lost none of their power 28 (yikes!) years later. Both versions of the video (this one and the Brazil version) are great. Its interesting to me as a metal head that ive seen several metal and rock covers of this, and theyre actually really good....Beast in Black, and The Northern Kings have both done really good covers, and there are two guys from Croatia, known as 2 Cellos, who have done a cover of this on the Cello.....you need to see that (just in your own time), its incredible!
Michael Jackson and Spike Lee did a fantastic job with both versions of this song and video. "THEY" being the powers that be, don't care about "US" the marginalized and the oppressed.
Really longing for more MJ content! Just finnished your playlist. And that's a really great t-shirt! This of course is an awesome song and film, and the chorus is so genius, it can be related to by any group experiencing injustice and it just goes to the core of a fight song. And there are many fightsongs around, in every language likely, but just taking it down to a level that no bully or elite can talk over or explain away as a complexity; like yeah, whatever - all I wanna say is that, they don't really care about us. Which means we are just as worthy of being cared for as you guys and taking our place and spelling it out. Like the song was a very important during the BLM-protests but (just as a random example) I remember an old collegue learning that I was a MJ-fan in the late 00s , telling me about how they had been part of a protest for more radical (/realistic, given the pace in which we're killing the planet) environment politics, outside a global environment meeting. The police had tried to weaken the protests (as always), forcing alot of people down to the ground and contained them, including my collegue. While sitting there on the ground, They Don't Care About Us got on from a protest speaker system and spontanously everyone sitting contained on the ground started singing along in the chorus, some banging along in the beat. They told me it was a powerful feeling of empowerment and community, like you may have the monopoly of violence to wrestle us down and separate us, in order to protect those in power and enable them to continue destroying our world, but you can not shut us up and you can not stop us. I also like how MJ draws parallells between the politics of violence and how it's used to recreate injustice both within and between societies, both in this film and by doing the two films of this song, showing how the power dynamics are connected without spelling it out. Same withchosing to give voice to "We've Had Enough", with it's verses doing the same thing. One does well to remember, that MJ on top of feeling the pain of others, was very well read on subjects surrounding social injustice and colonialism/neo-colonialism.
Hi honey & brown- NERD REALM. So good to see you guys back again. 🥰🥰 I was getting a little worried but I knew we would see you soon. You guys look great and Honey you are just glowing. Thank you so much for uploading this reaction video. This was so emotional a song and shortfilm and yes it did get a lot of controversy. It was hard to watch but I did not see this video much in the U.S. when it first came out -- the prison video especially. So Michael was criticized about the lyrics and actually apologized - he changed the audio to please everyone in his later release of the album. The was so much hate on him - he was not being prejudiced in his lyrics either - the public just did not care. I remember seeing all the media stories about his song - again another attempt to bring our King of Pop down. 😱😱So really... he is screaming out for everyone and we also know he is talking a bit about his own experience of being brutalized and abused by the law enforcement - his own rights were also violated. Yes, Michael was sharing another message of how much goes on -- the government and authorities JUST DON'T CARE - not then and not now. His other video locale is Brazil and was filmed in the favellas or what we call slums of Rio de Janeiro. There was mistreatment going on there and their rights also being violated. Michael was not afraid to speak out in his music. We will never forget how he tried so hard to share his message for change and loving each other in the world. OK people say he was angry on the album - I am thankful for his courage to speak out in his music. ❤❤ Thanks again Honey and Brown for bringing another awesome look at this video and your reactions. I am looking forward to your upload of the Brazil version too. 🥰🥰 If you have a chance or maybe you've seen it check out my live performance mix - it includes the two shortfillms- so I hope you enjoy. God bless you both and little moonwalker. Stay well and safe guys. Keep up the good vibes here on this channel. Thanks for keeping MJ corner alive and for sharing his legacy. Missed you guys. Great reaction as always to one of his biggest songs (this song hit 1 billion views recently on youtube, the Brazil version actually and only Billie Jean has more views). Definitely react in the future to "They don't care about us" in Munich 1997, and the "This is it" version as well, which is very cool. And of course, take your time, and when you are ready with more MJ, we'll be here waiting for it. Much love.

I remember some of the events in the video from when they originally happened, especially, the Rodney King riots. Unfortunately, not much has changed since then. There is no emotion or state of being that I dislike and fear so much as indifference and neglection. I'll take hate any day over that, hate and love can be two sides of the same coin but the opposite of love and compassion is indifference and neglection. And Michael Jackson just have exactly none of that. It's like MJ's the antithesis of that. It's very visible in this song but also just in every song and always.
