  • The tiburium was used as a bell tower during the 14th century, when a very large bell was cast in 1336. Today, the abbey bell tower houses a concert of five bells. The original bell is by Barigozzi, cast in 1899. Four more bells were added by Angelo Bianchi's factory in 1930; the largest of these bells was recast in 1982 because it had cracked. The abbey is one of the oldest in Milan and in Italy and its bells in this video ring festively for our audio recording.
The original Morimondo Abbey was founded in 1134, two kilometres from the present one, by some Cistercian monks from Morimond in France. Two years later, the monks moved on and established two more communities, while in 1161 the emperor descended and plundered the land. The church was built in less than a hundred years and opened in 1296, as one of the largest churches in Europe at the time. After several rises and falls, the monastery was finally suppressed on 31 May 1798 with the French invasion of Italy. From 1805 to 1950, the religious life of Morimondo was entrusted to a few priests, and then returned to religious hands and finally to the diocese in 2006.
