Single Crochet Stitch - Beginner Course: Lesson #6

- Learn how to single crochet stitch. The single crochet (sc) is the most common stitch used. So I am going to teach you this stitch first because it is so common and also because it is the easiest to learn.
Whatever you do don't get discouraged... It really takes a lot of patience to master crochet especially in the beginning. Also don't worry about which strand in the chain you place your hook into for now ... Just experiment with it and after you get the feel for it you will get better!
Wow thank you
Thank You! I needed this pinned post.
Why does it always look different? Single crochet is frustrating, go into stitch, y/o, go through, 2 loops on top, go through first loop, go back through, y/0 then go back through 2? I’ve watched many tutorials and have noticed, most people do this different ways, it’s confusing. Some just insert hook, y/o go back through and then go through 2. Which way is it? Go through one loop first then back up and y/o go through 2 or just go through 2?
@@crochetcoffeerenee8230 at first, it always looks very different (and wonky) and it is very frustrating, but after doing it a lot of times it just sticks to you and it won’t seem frustrating or confusing, and learning single crocheting is very hard.
Hi Crochet Renee. I am in your shoes. I have looked at too many videos, books, written patterns and they all left me frustrated and crying. I am going to walk you through the Crochet Guru’s technique. Her technique is the one I grasped immediately.
Chain 13.
The third chain away from your hook is where we will start. (When you progress, follow the instructions in the pattern.)
Take your crochet needle and insert into the back of the chain loop. Your yarn strand is vertical to your crochet hook
Counting stitches is something that is seriously messing me up learning how to crochet, so the fact that you were very clear on more than just the first stitch helped me a lot. I get the first one find but then i get confused after that, so this was a very good vid for it. Thank you 11 years later for being so clear about it!!!
I’m late too 💀
There are easier guides than this one. I've been looking at CZcams vids for long time learning new ways. This one not so easy.
Hey! That messes me up a lot too, something that has helped me is they make things that almost look like safety pins so you can mark where your actual first and last stitch in a row is. I know sometimes for me I can skip the very last stitch because it can become a little hard to see. You can also place them every 10, 15, etc.
There’s also apps to help you keep up with your chains and stitches which I’m going to try soon!
My ten-year-old daughter had no idea how to do the single crochet and when she watched your video on how to do it, she got it right away. Now she's making a blanket for herself and just now starting a scarf for her sister. Thank you so much Crochet Guru! Your a miracle
Bless you. After a life time of crochet I had a mini stroke and forgot how to do all my stiches. Your calm voice and very clear instructions helped me tremendously to remember how to do everything. I wasn't sure anyone would bother making a video like this, so I am grateful I found you!
I literally took me all afternoon (with breaks in between) and 3 tries just to do the first row and get all 29 single crochets! Whew!!
Hey all that practice will help tremendously when you start projects! Trust me I started too soon on big projects and had a mess so Im doing swatched and pracfcing basic stitches
Hi! I’m slightly confused. I did 30 chains but when I do it single chain stitch, it became 17...
I the explanation is very clear I would like to know how to do double crochet thank you
@@kaylagaye3736 same mine because 17, I think I might have skipped some of them 😭
Who els wants to throw there phone across the room? 😁
Crying 😭🤣
Apparently a 10 year old is smarter 😂
Meee
Me ❤😊
@@AlexeJade lol!
I managed to do the 1st row single crochet as a complete beginner - thanks to you!!! Botched the second row and will start over. But, delighted with the results 😀
Thank you for slowly crocheting and explaining what a single chrochet is. Everyone else does it so fast and hard to see.
Thanks again.
I've crocheted before, I've made a scarf, a shawl, about six coasters and about ten koozies. I'm trying another scarf and I wanted a quick refresh and this video is amazing. I've never seen another one that explained the three strands of the chain. I'm not sure I've ever crocheted right before now lol. Thank you so much!
I am glad you stuck with it...remember crocheting doesn't come easily and it takes practice. It sounds like you are well on your way though!
Oh my God you’re wonderful you saved me tonight. I was just forgetting the single because I’ve been doing the double in my class and thankfully to your video I am back on track. I will keep subscribed to you.
If you don't get it, don't forget about it. I can't believe I got it. I was trying it again yesterday night, did not get it. Here I am now, I got it. Thanks for sharing. So useful can wait to finish a beautiful scarf project with this. Haaaaaaaa 😀😃😁🤣😂.
I am so glad you got it!! Keep up the great work!
Absolutely the best teacher! I have knitted for years, never crocheted so this is a treat to learn from you and your thoroughness. I am really pleased, thank you!
Thanks for this really clear and thorough video! There are a lot of 'how to crochet' videos on youtube, but your series does a very good job of explaining the things beginners need to know.
so are you still crocheting?

I am glad you are excited. It is always fun to start your first project!!
I was originally taught how to crochet by a lady i use to work a few years ago...so fast ward I have a 2 yr old son and I want to crochet a blanket for him....after buying all my materials I realized I've forgotten what I learned...so I came on her and found this video.....THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. ..you are an awesome teacher! God Bless!
You are really a Guru because you're teaching the beginners. Thank you.
Great lesson. Thank you for going slow and for repeating the stitch several times. I've noticed some teachers go too fast and/or show how a stitch is done only once. That doesn't work for me as a total beginner! Your method of teaching works wonderfully for me. Even your voice is pleasant and comforting. Learning takes patience. You have it!!!!
OMG out of all of the Millions a videos this one is the absolute best. Thank you so very much for teaching me how to crochet I have wanted to learn the since I was a little girl I remember seeing my grandmother do this so I guess I could say it takes me back in time thank you so much
you are like one of the Greatest crèche instructor on CZcams... I'm super glad I came across your videos
Thank you for your kind words... you really made my day!!!
Crochet Guru
S. Minor same!!!!!!
Agreed!
She really is!! I'm so glad I found you, miss Crochet Guru 🎉🤗
Just a quick comment to thank you for all those videos. Two years ago a friend of mine taught me the basics of crochets and I practiced watching your videos. I also learned new stitches thanks to you ! Now I'm teaching a friend of mine and using your channel to help her as well.
and i speak for we all would not have a better tutor if we tried brilliant easy to understand takes her time no rushing just fab ⭐️
This is the best and informative crochet video that i have watched. I can clearly see where i went wrong the first time around. Thank you!
I am sorry that the videos were confusing. Which areas are you having problems with? Please let me know and I will try to help. I look forward to hearing from you.
Thank you so much for your comment and I am glad you found my videos helpful! Also thank you for recommending this video to other viewers!
i am here 8 years later...but um my crochet stitch is WAY off from what your masterpiece looks like
Your instructions are terrific, I especially appreciate how you show the wrong way to do it (at the first of the row) so that we can understand the right way. I learned a bit of crochet in school but I forgot a lot of it, your CZcams vids are really helping me to pick it up again.
Omg I felt so stupid trying to learn from my mother in the last like 2 years in and off. thank you she left out important info that you clearly demonstrated in like less than 3 minutes. My saviour!
Hi...if you wouldn't mind let me know what confuses you and I will do the best I can to help you out. Also if you need written instructions plus video go to my website...the link is in my description box.
Thank you! I am self taught and my side are never right! You have finally answered the very questions I had!❤
I was deemed unteachable til I met Crotchet Guru. I'm really grateful!!!!!!
Your taught me as you said put into dominant hand and I’m left handed - now I can do it right away. Thanks for curbing my frustration
I tried to make the dishcloth in one color but tell me why my “square” looks like the state of Louisiana 😭😭😭
Same 😭😭
I am so glad I came across your video. I have watched a few different ones from other people, and I was still confused and having difficulty. Your video really made sense. Thank you for taking the time to share your videos.
You're welcome Sammie... and thank you for your kind words!
MY NEEDLE WORK TEACHER ReCOMMENDS YOUR VIDEOS TO US FOR THE PRACTICE!
She says she recommend the best videos and send us... Your'e videos are actually the best!1
The best I've seen for learning AND a refresher course! I've shared the link with my friend who is learning and me, I needed a refresher since I haven't really crocheted in a long time. I learned as a preteen but been busy with other crafts for years. BUT, I recently bought a pattern so I can crochet a little Dachshund, just like my dog! :) I figure I can crochet the dog while keeping an eye on my embroidery machine!
Thank you sooo much! This video was so helpful. Last year I had no idea how to single crochet and threw my beginners kit in my closet. I found it again last week and watched many videos until I found yours! Thank you Crochet Guru!
Yes thank you for helping me out as a beginner. I really appreciate you.
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! I have learned so much!
I so appreciate you taking the time to make this. I haven't been able to get it, but you made it 'click' for me (And you're helping this stay at home mom find a hobby. :) )
I've been doing single crochet wrong all this time! I only went through the outside yarn of the chain and didn't know I had to go under both!
I did this for a whole year until I realised I was also only working in the back loop, lol! Live and learn...haha.
@@hwalt8455 think I may also be doing this ! I have to keep reminding myself that whilst learning it, it isnt going to be perfect ! My edges are all wonky too , but it is fun trying to get it right.
Me too OTA Cat
RIGHT!!!!
Me too!! I learned 3 things from 1 video that I've been doing wrong this entire time! Thanks guru!
I have watched over 10 videos on how to crochet, and never got it. I kept balling it up, and making it in a huge knot. (Don't ask me how I did that, because I don't even know) but as I as following through the video, I got it! I am so happy.! I recommend this video for beginners! She takes it slow, and explains it perfectly! Very well done!
Just started my own basic crochet series on my own channel after years of watching videos on CZcams. Can't wait to have a community as big as yours. Great video.
The only account/video to help me crochet!! thanks so much xx
I totally understand. I think if you keep going with the lessons things will become more clear.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to make these very helpful instructional videos! I can finally crochet after many many failed attempts!
You are amazing! I have only started on Monday and just got the hang of making a stitch note and starting a chain!
Hi Alejandra...It does depend on the pattern and on the designer. It is typical to crochet into one chain loop only when you crochet into the chain, but 2 strands are fine and it does give the project a different look!
Hi JennAfer...Yes put your hook through the 2 pieces of yarn that make up the V...If you go to my next tutorial on learning how to double crochet I explain it a little better in that tutorial. I am planning on making this one a little more clear in the future. If that doesn't help let me know and I will try to explain it further!
this video is wonderful even 10 years later!! thank you for posting!!
Yes crochet guru, I watched your video and am feeling much confident ...as I am doing more and more I am getting a feel of it and better understanding as well ? Thanks for your great video
This reply is to Taylor... Sorry I am unable to reply back to you on this platform for some reason. Yes you are correct about using the top strand only of the chain and then using the two strands when crocheting into the stitch!
Thank you! I appreciate your help :)

Thank you for these videos! I have a crochet club with 5th and 6th grade students and I needed a good video to show them. This is perfect!
I am glad you like it!!!
Can I please join your club hahaaa I'm struggling big time. I refuse to give up, my Mother made some truly beautiful pieces, I have to get this!!
I am so glad I found your channel!! Have been reading on how to crochet and really had no clue on what's going on...your tutorial is so clear and straight to the point. :) thank you so much!!
Thank you! This video is just the right speed and word usage for a beginner like me.🧶🧶🧶🧶
Trust me only because of this video i was able to continue above chain stitch.. Thanks a million.. You are Indeed my crochet Guru. :-)
Thank you sooooo much for the excellent video. Not only was the camera work great but your explanations are crystal clear.
I just decided to start crocheting, and ive looked and looked for a good video to help me get started and i wanted to say thank you so much for your videos they have been the most helpful!!!
You did a great job as explain how to do a single crochet. I can never remember how to do a single crochet but some how I can remember hie to do a double crochet. You make so easy .
Essential Craftsman said single crochet was one of the better ways to wrap an extension cord, and it seems to work. What a useful skill.
Is anyone else having a difficult time watching her say "never do it from the top" and then doing...it from the top lmao
OMG FINALLY!!!💚💚💚A video that explains the strands &which 1 to use 🤗 ty n bless u for this video💚🥰🙆♀️
THANK YOU sooo much I've been struggling no one broke down the three strand thing for this I'm happy
Big thank you to you...very helpful videos to learn crochet.
After my third row I finally figured out which strands to insert the hook into, I’m so glad I just kept going! Your videos are very helpful thank you
thanks a lot - i was close to giving up when i came across your video and it has been much better than the book i was using - so yeah thanks again for giving me some hope and self confidence x
This is a very helpful reminder for me to YO again before completing the stitch! Seriously, I can't tell you how often I end up making slip stitches and have to undo my row. Thank you!!!
She has 2 loops
Me over here with 3 : what did I do wrong ??!??
if u figured it out PLEASE tell me what the issue is
I love your tutorial 💕, because I'm learning new crochet patterns & there nothing wrong w/ a refresher course.
Omg. This is like I think the 7th video I watching and its the only one I understand. Thank you!!!
Your videos are really helpful and make crocheting look quite easy. Thank you!
I am really glad you like my videos!!! Thank you!
Hi Stacie...This is a very normal thing when you first start crocheting. I would try holding your yarn a little tighter...do this by concentrating on the grip of your yarn. Sometimes holding your hands closer together can help tighten your work as well. If this doesn't help try using a smaller hook for a while maybe an H or G hook would help. Just remember this is totally normal for beginners and the more you practice the better your stitches will start to look.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. I have been struggling with this concept for a long time and you have made it so simple and easy to understand. ❤
You are the best to follow and understand. Thank you
Hi there! I just started crocheting and found your tutorials! I am about to chain my first 30 and single crochet. Thank you for these helpful videos!
I am so glad you like them!
Thank you so much for your lesson. I bet much appreciate it. If been crocheting into my 2nd loop. It looked so wrong. I tore it out and came here and was lucky enough to find you. Lol it looks so much better in the top loop. Lol ☺️
Thank you! I've been trying to teach myself to crochet and was having trouble but your instructions helped a great deal!
Thanks Navya!! I am really glad it helped!
Wow your patience and slowness and verbal explanations give me hope I can do this! Thank you! Subscribed and like 😀
That is awesome to hear and thanks for your comment!
my chain was too tight so i just ended up making a bunch of knots so i gave up😔😔😔
Thank you, your video has helped me learn crochet. I like how you explain everything.
Thank you for your kind words!
thanks so much for your videos! They've been by far the easiest to follow and have helped tremendously!
best how to crochet videos on youtube, thank you so much!
Thank you so much Veronica!!! I really appreciate the kind words and I am really glad my videos are working for you!
Actually I watched lot of crochet videos..it was confusing..but you explained very clearly..thank you so much..
I have tremors so this is hard for me but im determined I'm going too make a blanket for my great granddaughter.
No problem let me know if any of those suggestions work!
No problem and thanks for the comment!
3:31 you are the first CZcamsr for me who is saying this
That was also a problem I had when I first started. Loosen your grip on the yarn and try to let the yarn flow a little more freely between your fingers. Also try holding your yarn and hook hands further a part. If that doesn't help let me know and I will give your some more tips!
Great video! Thanks so much, with this I finally got it!
Thank you so much for this video! My mom and I really wanted to learn how to crochet and this has been really helpful!
I might finally understand where to stick in the hook now... thanks!
when you turn your work away from the camera i cant see where you place the stitch
Thank you so much for these videos!!!! I had watched 3 other peoples videos and my projects were still not coming out the way they should. my last dish cloth looked so messed up it wasnt even funny. i rewatched these videos what felt like a 100 times and couldnt understand where i was going wrong. i finally found ur videos and am now on my 3rd row and it finally looks the way it should. u are amazing!!!! and im so subscribing to your videos so u can help me along the way to making my baby blanket for my daughter :)
That is awesome to hear Saber and thank you a ton for letting me know!!
This is the best tutorial for beginner level I have seen!
Thank you so much for you clear, informative video. It make doing the SC clear and it really helped showing the three strands!
THANK YOU FOR THIS
i have never been able to tell from various diagrams in my crochet book and videos where exactly in the chain im supposed to put the hook
Thank you for explaining where the three parts of the chain are!!
I really wish you could do this over with a darker background. This is very hard to see, but I love how precise you are in showing exactly where to put stitches. Thank you!
