MENDELSSOHN VIOLIN CONCERTO in E minor - KYUNG-WHA CHUNG / SOLTI

  • Korean violinist Kyung-Wha Chung has appeared regularly as a soloist with the world's most prestigious orchestras, working with conductors such as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim, Sir Simon Rattle, André Previn, Bernard Haitink, Riccardo Muti and the late Sir Georg Solti, as seen conducting here in this clip.
    Felix Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto in E minor is surely one of the most outstanding works ever written and one of the most popular and most frequently performed violin concertos of all time. Distinctive aspects of the concerto include the almost immediate entrance of the violin at the beginning of the work (rather than following an orchestral preview of the first movement's major themes, as was typical in Classical era concertos) and as a whole, the concerto has a thoroughly composed form, in which the three movements are melodically and harmonically connected and played together without pauses between movements. The melodic structure of each movement becomes engraved in ones mind; truly the sign of a true masterpiece!

    I first came across Chung through her Decca recording of the Tchaikovsky concerto with the LSO and Previn in around 1970 and fell in love with her playing immediately. Then, shortly afterwards, I heard her live with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. This confirmed her as the PERFECT violinist for my taste. She has never been replaced! The ultimate brilliant and expressive musical genius. A legend indeed.

    I can remember the moment I first saw this clip. It was when I was only 13 yr old middle school student. The virtuoso in sky blue dress blew me out of the earth. I ran to the record shop and bought her Mendelssohn recording. It was my first bought classical music CD.
    after decades I finally saw her playing in person. after the performance I took photos with her at the autograph event. I said to her my story written above. She was so sweet, blowing my heart again.

    One of her classic performance when she was young. She was always unique and wonderful in her interpretations with much contrast from that of Mutter and other prominent violinists from that era. She worked well with many non-German conductors/orchestra, especially with London Phil. Her works with Previn was impressive but he was no Solti. I wish there were better sound quality version of this performance... Thank you for uploading this.

    Bravo. Very nicely played. Kyung-Wha Chung was truly magnificent.
    Watching the video in certain sections(specifically where it shows the orchestra's violin section backing up the soloist), made me wonder whether most orchestral musicians, let's say the average violin player is capable of performing a virtuosic solo part in a concerto like this.
    I think I'm leaning towards yes, but I would also guess it would be a stretch for many of them as well.

    • @billyjoedopesmoker
      @billyjoedopesmoker Před 10 lety +2

      you are leaning the wrong way, and i'm assuming your statement in the past tense 'her playing was truly magnificent' refers specifically to this performance since her career and stellar ability are still intact. but your point of other violinists being able to play virtuoso parts - of course, many of them could 'play' those solos, but they would never sound the same as when la maestra Chung plays them. she has a superior ability in making the instrument express the music so that it comes alive through the power of her incredible artistry. most violinists simply do not have the commanding ability over the instrument to do that. it is either acquired with some natural ability, a compulsive practice regimen, and a good musical education (Kyung Wha Chung), or one is born with exceptionally rare potential, a prodigy, and has the opportunity to develop it (Sarah Chang). one could list the very few other solo violinists whose careers span, or spanned, 5 decades and they would fit into either of those categories. you could also list a lot more who started out as concert soloists but whose careers did not span 5 decades, maybe a decade if they were lucky, as a premier solo performer. they retired and/or were no longer in demand after a few years so they started teaching the instrument and giving recitals at the Dayton Community Center once a year, or they decided that playing in NYC once a week at an italian restaurant and the rest of the time busking in the bowels of Penn Central Station was a lot more fun way to make a buck.

      Billy Zé
      Hmmm.... thanks for your response, I appreciate your answer to my question. I certainly agree with you that Ms. Chung has been and is still a great virtuoso violinist, I did not realize the span of her career however.
      This is my favorite violin concerto(the only one I really know and like), but I will admit I don't really know all that much about violinists. I do like some of the contemporary artists such as Sarah Chang in particular, but have mixed feelings about Janine Jansons and Hilary Hahn. There was a young male virtuoso(I think a european teenager), that I heard once here on CZcams(playing Tchaikovsky I think) and was blown away by his wonderfully rich tone, expressiveness and amazing technicality, but unfortunately I cannot remember his name. Anyway, I am kind of old school and have some older, but unquestionably great recordings(at least in my opinion) featuring artists such as Pinchas Zuckerman with L. Bernstein and the NYP, Arthur Grumiaux playing along side Bernard Haitink and the RCO I think and one other. I have heard Menuhin and Heifetz, but while probably considered great in their day, I don't particularly like them, probably more do to musical standards and styles of the times, than their own musicianship. I do like a performance by Isaac Stern I saw here on CZcams however, I thought it was very nice.
      I played the clarinet in High School and it was my hope to one day be able to play Mozart's clarinet concerto. I did practice a lot and was pretty good, could play it pretty much through, including the difficult passages, but I wasn't ready to play it as a professional soloist by any means. I was fortunate to attend a concert where it was performed by my local symphony orchestra, and the soloist was the first chair. I think his name was Scott Anderson and despite one glaring mistake, he did a very fine job.
      Unfortunately my musical dreams have pretty much died at this point of my life and only occasionally do I experience music by listening to others, but when I get the chance I do try to enjoy it as much as I can. Anyway, happy listening.

      @dugitomi Před 9 lety +3

      mydogskips2 thank you very much for the interesting and sincere reply. sorry it has taken a while to respond. yes, la Maestra Chung started performing professionally in the late 1960s and became famous in england in the early 70s. recently, i've been listening to a video of Arthur Grumiaux playing the complete Bach violin sonatas (BWV 1014 - 1023).with Christiane Jaccottet playing harpsichord (if you want to hear it just search youtube for: grumiaux bach - and filter the search for long videos). his tone, may he rest in peace, is incredibly rich and beautiful and his phrasing has such profound expression. it is music one can get lost in.
      actually, i have no formal music education besides 9 months of bass guitar lessons when i was 14 yrs. old, which was over 40 years ago. but i love music and taught myself to play guitar because it was not much fun going thump, thump, thump on the bass guitar in the high school jazz band or by myself. i've been teaching myself simplistic keyboards during the past 4 years since i retired. but i don't read music and have a poor sense of rhythm.
      the bass guitar was not a good instrument for me as it is primarily an instrument for rhythm and harmony, neither of which fascinate me as melody does.
      i can't play keyboards as others do because my left hand wants to solo/play melody and my right hand tries to keep time - after playing guitar for nearly 40 years, it seems impossible to learn a different way of playing music. so i play keyboards like i play guitar: my right hand tries to keep time while my left hand is improvising melodic lines. but it is kind of strange to have all the melody below middle C. i don't think that is the way keyboards are supposed to be played, but i've never been one for following rules. the keyboards i have are a casio sa-46 and a casio sa-76. those are toy keyboards for children, so it probably doesn't matter anyway. to me, they sound kind of interesting when pushed through the onkyo stereo and the toshiba boom box. the girlfriend can tolerate it but the cat attacks me, so progress is very slow . . . ok, muchas gracias y saludos desde Tokio.
