    Excellent topic, great advices!
Dopamine hit when (buying something) + (that smells good) + (is a novelty) can be really challenging to master under control. But guys, it's just dopamine crave. Shush dopamine, sit down and wait.
What helped me too, besides opting for decants, distancing myself from youtube (algorithm) videos forums and websites that feed the sense of importance of a f----- perfume, is telling myself when encountering new thing: I ALREADY OWN THIS.
Going to a perfume shops, I would enjoy sampling, but I would tell myself "I already own this" (even if I don't), "I have all of this" (I see on the shelves). It tricks the brain, so the dopamine excitement doesn't get employed. Sense of lack also. Novelty too. You can put all those objects in their place, sit down, I already own you. Shut up, with your promises. Shush. Shut up, hype. Shut up, advertising. Silence...
Also getting rid of the bottles at home that doesn't bring you true joy helps. It's like a tidying up apartment (Marie Kondo style). Become a minimalist. If you didn't wear perfume for a year, get rid of it. Be merciless, absolutely non-attached. That't mastery over objects.
And tremendous open space, so you can have a lot of fresh air for something truly unique: smell of freedom.

Thank you for this. I have seriously had the thought recently "I may die before I use all of my fragrances". I don't mean to be negative, but it was an honest assessment. I have been too influenced by people I don't know through social media.... It's silly when I think about it.
Before Hurricane Katrina I had a collection of 5 fragrances that I was content with and loved! Today, I have around 70 fragrances, and anxiousness has joined the party. But I know I'm on my way to killing this bad habit... It starts with being honest with ourselves.
Thank you for the wisdom you shared.

I had about 4 100mls, a couple of 30mls, and a few 15ml bottles earlier this year. Now I've got about 100. I worked out how much is spent just on middle eastern clones in the past few months and it was over £600. Add in the few bottles of expensive perfume and it's in the thousands. I'm disgusted at myself but I still can't stop. I'm trying though. I know I've got a problem.

@@melodyvalentine8779 I know the feeling. I'm doing better. I have come to the realization that with the collection I currently have that I probably already have every genre of fragrance out there. Truthfully, there's only so many ways you can mix the same notes 😅. I'm more against blind buying now, which I think was the biggest contributor to my bad habit. Going in the store and sampling gives me SO much more control. I'm able to make an informed decision based upon how I feel about the fragrance then and there. Little changes will make a big difference.

I had a very stressful time in my life last November and found a perfume in the mall and googled it. Found those videos you were talking about and by last month I bought 11 bottles. Then, saw a video on decluttering and this girl decluttered 2 perfumes that she hyped so much that I bought and felt cheated somehow. Though I still like them. But she threw them out as if what she raved about them suddenly disappeared. So, she healed me. Shocked me and healed me. Thank you for this video!

3 years after filming this and it's what I needed to hear. Thanks for recording it! I feel like I'm on the verge of this going out of hand. It's always 'just 1 more and I'm done' but there's always a 'just this one'. I've been gifting bottles and whatnot, as I made some wrong choices in the past too. It's all trying to cover up for something internal we can't yet face, resolve, or transform (... yet!), and using external stimuli to fill in an inner gap.

My addiction is so bad I could never do that. I won't even get rid of bottles that I've not used in ages, bottles with a tiny bit left in that I'll never use, or even perfumes I hate. I just feel too attached to them and there's a sense of "but what if I suddenly start liking it down the line and I haven't got it anymore?" If I really love a perfume I have an intense fear of running out of it so I stock up on as much as possible. I can't wait till I'm nearly out of my current bottle incase it gets discontinued before then, you never know. I've seen some amazing perfumes that loads of people love that have been discontinued. Thankfully there's clone houses that do really good replicas of most of them so I don't have to pay thousands on ebay but who knows of they'll be around forever?

For me it's definitely become a bit of an addiction as well as spawned some unhealthy behaviors around buying and decluttering and a constant cycle because ultimately, I don't want more than maybe 10-20 perfumes that really speak to me. Great video 💕

Ive got 10 fragrances (9 different ones + 1 backup). I have a huge urge to buy more but i try to control the spending by putting strict cost, quality and bottle size restrictions for myself. For example i dont think ill ever get trough a 100ml bottle unless its a serious daily signature scent, so i only buy 30ml and 50ml.
I also like some pretty wild artsy scents but in real life they dont get much use, so i have to plan abit where and in what event a fragrance will be appropriately used.

I only buy magical scents, scents that I find completely addictive (like Tuscan Leather).
I don't think I'll ever own more than 20 FBs. I own 12 FBs at the moments, and I'm 2.5 years into the journey. I've smelled 100s of perfumes... except for my 12 FBs, I also got myself a few decants and a few samples.

So I feel myself falling with in a fragrance addiction. However, I have bought about 16 colognes all under $30. One is from Alfred sung which smells fantastic and I only spent $15 on it. To make a long story short I bought many colognes during my senior year of junior high, and when I got into high school, I was buying many different colognes. I think I had a total number of about 25. Of those 25 I had about four left this year of 2023. I decided to throw away those because there was only a few sprays left, and they did not complement my body, I am 29 years old now and I have decided to buy a few different colognes that fit my age group. So I have bought Alfred song. I can’t remember the specific cologne but it is a purple liquid. Open, a RAMIS, Holston, Z 14, 4711 , one-man show, BIJAN, and a few others. My plans for these is the sea witch. Five will be my primary collection.
For this summer, I have actually bought Antonio Banderas, blue seduction, and I feel like it will be a great cologne. But I have now cut myself off and I want to enjoy these some odd 18 20 colognes that I have bought, and find out which ones will be my primary five. One will be for going out at night with my wife, the other one will be for daily use, one will also be for when I get out of the shower and want to just smell fresh, and then one for the summertime in high heat situation, and then another one for daily/special event use.
I remember my father, wearing a specific three cologne selection, and I actually owned those three and feel that they complement my body. So it will be interesting to see if those three will make it into my final five but I think having five is a good selection and good amount . It will keep you from buying too many, but also allow you to enjoy and create memories with the cologne that you have instead of constantly needing to buy more. Just my two cents I thought you would enjoy hearing what I’ve been going through.
Primarily the reason why I wanted to revamp my cologne collection is because I wasn’t really happy with the way I was smelling I have not really been wearing a lot of cologne, and just been using a very good deodorant and I was never really happy with the way I smelled and decided it was time to get back into colognes. Thank you for this fantastic video and I think you have a pretty good strategy yourself.

I blame it all on Covid, I used up my bottles and went online to check for new purchases,, and then the youtube suggestions started popping up endlessly .... Yeah, my fragrance collection was originally between 7 - 10 fragrances, but with my research on youtube I bought these back PLUS 9 new ones. Still not too big a collection with my 19 fragrances, but my nose has actually changed over the years, so 4 of my old favourite I will never repurchase. My plan is to empty and declutter and empty little by little and keep 12 alltogether-- nice number 🙂

I obsess over fragrances and I've sampled a good bit, but I'm very picky and have a minimalist/situationalist mindset for their use.
Of the 150 I've tried, I only love about 15-20 of them and consider them bottle worthy (ones I absolutely love). Of those 15-20 I have them split into situations and seasons.
I'd be happy with that number of bottles and some decants to mix things up a bit. Don't think I'll ever go the hoarder rout with hundreds of fragrances tbh.

@@HandsomeSmells the problem with that is I noticed on ebay the smaller size bottles cost more than the 100 ml ones.

You've really offered some wise advice on the subject in this video. I think I've been buying too many bottles lately and like you said I think I should buy more decants from now on to stop wasting money.

I've never seen you with a full bottle.. I got rid of over 100 bottles. Now I just buy 30ml bottles or decants. But I actually go a lot of fragrances. Oud is a different story and natural oils I consider more of medicine.

Very honest and useful video! I started this hobby in the last couple years but am over it. I think I just bought my last bottle (I know...it's like someone saying they just took their last drink 🙂).

Well said. I'm on this journey for about 2 years or so, and at some point I got really concerned about being an 'addict'. So I started to observe my behavior and thankfully I only got 16 bottles now. Sold some, and started buying way more decants. Thanks for your thoughts on this topic!

Lol Axe. Been there, and after that shit stopped projecting in five minutes I felt dirty. This year my addiction began. Once I had 8 bottles I immediately stopped and began buying decants. I think where I got fooled is buying Versace Dylan Blue on a blind buy and I just said “crap...this shit reeks...” lol that’s when I knew buying bottles wasn’t worth it.

I see many reviewers start off with humble collections like tltg fragrance lounge. Ross use to have a humble collection and now I see nothing but niche. He's down the hole for sure.
    I'm coming out the hole!

I can relate to this, not so much an addiction (but def more than i probably need) ... getting into niche fragrances more than designer as of last 6 months - like im going out of my way to find them (some are SUPER EXPENSIVE LOL). i have like 23-25 bottles in my collection - i keep them properly stored, so they last years without going bad. I gave like 6-7 away to my younger brother that I find myself not wearing as much anymore, gave him these:
    - Subtil Pour Homme by Salvatore Ferragamo - love smell (performance is shit tho)
    - The One for Men Eau de Parfum by Dolce&Gabbana
    - Dunhill Desire
    - CH Men Prive by Carolina Herrera
    - Artisan Pure by John Varvatos
He's getting into it himself too, he has more self control than I had. I have to limit myself to like 3-4 a year, was buying like 4-5 every month or 2 at one point, like id just go on a shopping spree and catch myself paying off credit cards for 3 months. Now i have real responsibilities - Saving for my wedding, paying off a house, we got a new puppy (german shepard mix) . Recently I bought my 2nd bottle of Herod Parfums de Marley and Amouage Journey Man. Got a few things on my to buy list but going to hold off until May-June (Tight budget).
I will look into getting decanters/travel sprays... I've seen them... and i guess if I really love them, I'll buy the bottle.

Interesting video bro. I think I manage to control my collection. I try to keep my collection under 50 and often sell bottles I don’t reach for any more. I would love to bring it down to under 10 which I think will be impossible! As you know I cant get into decants! and I hate seeing reviewers with a wall of frags behind them!!

    • @HandsomeSmells
      @HandsomeSmells  Před 4 lety +1

I'd say, only get a full bottle if it's top 10 (not seasonally - in general) stuff, or if you think you can decant a 100 - 150 ml bottle far enough to get your purchase 'for free.' A year has 365 days. Why in the world would someone then want to sit on 100+ bottles? I currently own 39, and try to sell off 6 of these, in order to obtain a few very special fragrances. Then I'm done with eyeing new bottles and only will go from samples to samples every now and then. I currently have samples of most Xerjoff scents. Yet I don't own one bottle: only the 'winner' of this sampling round might eventually be worthy of a full bottle purchase. I don't want a big collection: I want the best for my taste.

    • @HandsomeSmells
      @HandsomeSmells  Před 4 lety +2

Majority of men addicted to fragrance are mostly womanizers. The best way to be financially responsible is to go get married to a decent girl.
