    Kershaw & Emerson really nailed it with these blades. Perfectly executed collaboration between the two.

    It's a great line up for sure. It's worth noting that the CQC-7k (recently reviewed by me) won "Best Buy of the Year" at this year's Blade Show. It's also worth pointing out that these knives weren't adapted by Kershaw from Emerson's existing line but rather designed by Emerson and built by Kershaw. Emerson wanted a true collaboration hence the name Kershaw Emerson for this line as well as the logo "Emerson Designs" on the blades of these knives. I agree with you Scout, traditional Emerson knives aren't worth the expense to me but bringing the designs to the $30 range makes it amazingly affordable! Keep up the great work!

      ***** How does the 6k and 8k compare in size? i know its .25 inches in blade difference but just curious what you think of the size. Im torn between these 2.The 8k reminds me a little of the Emerson Bulldog

    CQC-5 owner here and agree with your review. 2-weeks EDC with no issues, no unintentional snagging deployments, blade steel is as expected with some small nicks from cutting zip ties, plastic bands, etc. Again, everyone else, YMMV.

    I love this budget friendly line brought to us by kershaw and Emerson knives. I own the cqc7k and just love it. Some say emersonns are priced to high. I don't think so for what you are getting. Also I have checked out the zt 0620 and 0620cf in Vegas at the usn gathering and they were phenomenal. If you love the overbuilt style of Emerson and the smooth operation of zt knives then that is a home run for you.

    I picked up one of the Coyote CQC-4k when Midway got their first batch. I have been very happy with it so far. Razor sharp out of box, however the 8CR14MOV steel is relatively soft and does dull with about a modest week's use (typical stuff - packing/ unpacking, light "on-th-go" food prep, etc). Nice thing about softer steel is that you can get a nice edge back without hours of work involved.
    I only have only noticed two "flaws" in this budget thumper:
    1. Emerson's "Wave" opening feature is an unreliable opening method without a LOT of practice. I do not expect the blade to open every time I may "ham-fistedly" grab it for use. There is a specific motion that is required to achieve consistent results (Down & back).
    2. "Thumb Disc" takes some getting used to. Seeing as the above is true, you will find yourself reaching for this awkwardly placed "disc" in order to manually open the blade. I found that with how tight everything was straight from Kershaw, this little guy was a real pain to open manually for the first few days.
    All in all, I really enjoy carrying this blade. Small, light, very comfortable in hand and best of all... ONLY $35!!
    Get one. It will grow on you too, I think.

    The 8 is ground on the wrong side for right handed users. Chisel grinds need to be ground on the side outside to the users' dominant hand, as we generally push away from us when we cut things, but since the 8 is ground incorrectly, you would have to pull it towards you to get a good cut. I have no idea why they chose to do it this way but it's a common issue with chisel ground knives.

  • @heraclid13
    @heraclid13 Před 10 lety +1

    I decided to treat myself to a new knife the other day and looked at a couple of different knives, the CQC-3 being one of them. I love Emerson openers, but as has already been mentioned, I also wouldn't buy an Emerson due to the price and was interested in these because you get it for so much less. The knife felt sturdy and well-made. But that was also kinda what sunk it for me - it was heftier than expected. I already have an Endura with wave opener that comes in at about 3.5 oz and has a 3.8 in VG-10 blade (current EDC). Yes, it costs a bit more, but I bought it before these newer knives came out, and even now I think it's worth the extra. If I wanted to go smaller, there's a Delica wave opener too that comes in at 2.5 oz (although it costs the same as the Endura version for some reason). As far as what I went home with, after passing on the CQC-2 just because of the recurve blade (don't like sharpening them), handling the CQC-3, a Lone Wolf Landslide and Dragonfly 2, I went home with a Dragonfly 2.

  • @MichaelWebber
    @MichaelWebber Před 9 lety

    The reason for "paying a little more for these" vs. Kershaw's non-partner knives is the *_manual of arms_* - these *carry, deploy, and handle* exactly like their Emerson counterparts. So if your Stateside trainer is an Emerson, you can take one of these overseas (or on any flight) secure in the knowledge that a familiar friend is at hand, and if stolen from your luggage you won't have a heart palpitation.

  • @biguy525
    @biguy525 Před 10 lety +1

    Good video, I would say that the extra cost is mainly for the opening feature. You really can't find that feature on other knifes. So if you want that feature but don't want to pay the price for the Emerson it is probably the way to go.

I really do think you get your money's worth and then some with these

  • @mikeam3871
    @mikeam3871 Před 5 lety

    The CQC-7K is badly machined. Once the frame side blade lock is smoothed and polished out (from the factory it looks like it’s been hacksawed), the surface area under the Teflon washers at the blade are polished, it still feels like it has sand in the works. The wave feature works some of the time - I wouldn’t bet on it, and the thumb disk is not ergonomic or fast enough to use this knife for defense as an EDC.

    Is there something I'm missing about why people seem to not like liner locks? It's essentially a frame lock with a grip attached to the outside, it should be just as strong.

    • @thenameless615
      @thenameless615 Před 9 lety

      tskwared667 Liner lock by its design differs alot from a frame lock. Locking area (where the lock touches the blade) is much bigger than on the usual liner lock, which means a better wear resistance and lockup, frame lock is thicker and harder to produce, it is considered to be stronger and more reliable, besides when you hold the knife with a framelock you keep it in place just by the grip of your hand, which means again more reliability and a gurantee that it wont fail. And it is less prone to breaking.

Does the thumb disk do enough of a job to flick it open or is the blade tight enough that you can only slide it open. Id it's too tight, will simply loosening the screw do the job?

      +GreedyLobbyist To be clear, I don't boycott all PRC made products, (Next to impossible,) but I try to avoid them for political, humanitarian, and quality-control concerns. That being said, I've handled a few PRC Kershaws, and the quality was not an issue.

      There were no issues along those lines with either of the two I owned, or that I noticed with any of the others in the line. Thanks for the feedback.

    My name is Sam. I'm 8 years old. Can you do a review on the Spyderco Dragonfly 2 Salt? (This is Sam's mom, whose account he's allowed to use occasionally).

    How about a demo on how the "Thumb Guard" or more patently correct "Wave" feature actually works??? You guys fumbled through a demo of all of these knives seemingly without doing much homework on them and misinterpreted one of most crucial pieces of information. Love the knives and BladeHQ, but not this review!

    Lol it was never intended to be a thumb ramp 🤦 it was intended to be a blade catch and later found to catch in a pocket lol :p

    Made in china!? I'd buy one if it was USA made and better steel even for twice the Chinese made price point.
