- President Obama sits down with Evan Smith, CEO / Editor in Chief of The Texas Tribune, for a conversation about civic engagement in the 21st Century before an audience of creators, early adopters and entrepreneurs who are defining the future of our connected lives. The President will call on the audience to apply their ideas and talents to make technology work for us - especially when it comes to tackling big challenges like increasing participation in the political process and fighting climate change.
About SXSW:
Started in 1987, South by Southwest (SXSW) is a set of film, interactive, and music festivals and conferences that take place early each year in mid-March in Austin, Texas. SXSW’s original goal was to create an event that would act as a tool for creative people and the companies they work with to develop their careers, to bring together people from a wide area to meet and share ideas. That continues to be the goal today whether it is music, film or interactive technologies.

We will never have a more eloquent, charismatic, and well-spoken commander in chief our lifetimes...
He's a bucket mouth blowhard that loves to hear himself talk. Problem is what he says is mostly...SHIT
+Vince Gilbert even when he has his beloved teleprompter. I always feel stupider when i listen and try to understand (IMPOSSIBLE) what he's saying. Shamefully I admit i voted for him once upon a time. Not voting is a vote to not pretend this is really a democracy, and that is how i cast my vote now.
@4browsing This man is giving respect to a former President who was ostensibly always ethical. Obama's Presidency was never tainted by the defects of the Clinton Administration. Your characterizations are biased and the points you make are petty and insignificant. You clearly would be better off thinking about how to improve your own lot in life so you can be a happier person instead of the disservice to yourself and others of maintaining any presence here as a pestering troll. That goes for all naysayers finding fault on this comment reply thread.
...or useless.
Although, I don't agree with him on decryption, he is pretty spot on in every other category. How could we listen to Obama and consider Trump has even half a brain?!?
+howdydutt1e Considering Trump wanted to ask Bill Gates to shut down the internet ... I'd say he has less than half a brain lol
lol
O
The arrows point toward where Oboma's he's headed in the afterlife
👌👌
We are not ready to lose this President...#intelligent #balanced
+Vince Gilbert Such is life...and of a healthy democracy, you are entitled to disagree. Just make sure you are doing your part
GOAT POTUS
"The key is as secure as possible" -can be stolen "It is accessible by the smallest number of people possible" -will be expanded "for a subset of issues that we agree are important" -will grow by the day
I wish the French executive government or any high ranking eurocrate could talk with such an ease and experience about democratic digital culture and the step by step reinvention of the state.
A fireside chat with Mayor Tommy Shanks.
I think encryption of personal information is something you basically have to accept as government. It is technically possible to encrypt data in an unbreakable way even without hardware support or support by Apple. The argument about tax encorcement is invalid since you can control that also without accessing an individuals private data just by looking at the money transfers.
The freedom of encryption of personal information should rather being understood in the same way as the freedom of memorizing personal information in your own mind. The government never had access to the data stored in your brain and human co-existence works anyway. And so will it be with inaccessible encrypted data.
Politicians and law enforcements basically have to live with it, they can't change it anyway. If they force Apple to unlock the iPhone, then third-party apps for encryption will be used by terrorists. With strong enough encryption and passphrases FBI, NSA & Co. will brute force into eternity and nobody can then be forced to unlock the door.

People seem to have this misconception about encryption. Encryption isn't impossible to break. It's possible, just difficult to. The best hackers around the world can get around encryption if they really want to. That's why despite there being encryption, people are still being hacked.
Encryption isn't perfect, but it strives to be. The encryption used today will be obsolete in the next few years. The government will feel retarded when they look back and see how they were spouting "unbreakable encryption". They were doing the same thing in the 1990's with clipper chip.
Apple doesn't want to say that "our encryption is barely 1 step ahead of hackers" because it would bankrupt them. Nobody would want to use their devices if it's just barely working. The average person doesn't know shit about tech, their own computers they use; let alone how encryption works.
The government is extremely manipulative. Playing on people's fear. Get this, Bin Laden already won. The US bleeds billions of dollars a year to the threat of terrorism. The irony of it all is that the US is the one who armed these same terrorists in the first place who were originally rebels. Go figure.
+Varuna Heart I haven't heard of any hackers that broke the encryption of AES-256 (the state-of-the-art encryption used since years), mostly social engineering or other security vulnerability are used to hack into systems. It's pretty much an academic debate.
In practice it's with almost absolute certainty impossible to break standard encryption within a human lifetime. The method also isn't "barely 1 step ahead of hackers" and it won't be for a long time. You are able to use encryption nowadays and can be sure that nobody on this planet will be able to hack into it.
My point is that this will not affect public safety in any way, that's what politicians and law enforcements have to learn and to accept. They are in fear too, not only the people. There is just no reason to fear inaccessible information, this is kind of irrational thinking.

Like him or loathe him America is going to miss his intelligence, lucidity and oratory prowess. The fact Trump is actually a serious contender likely to win the Republican ticket is genuinely horrifying.
+Durzel Very much this.
it might be an act maybe Trump's just saying all that crazy shit just to gain votes think he was a liberal throughout most of his career then all of a sudden he switches to mad dog conservatism something ain't right
+Farhan Mckinnons Erratic behaviour is almost more scary though. If you don't know what he's gonna do next that will affect foreign relations, and the perception uncertainty in the world economy even if he doesn't do anything crazy. Also he might be doing normal stuff for a while and then do one or two completely off the deep end acts.
Yeah I guess
Prophetic 😒
35:00 interesting point. Private sector only solves the problems where money is to be made.
the thumbnail has obama doing the double 6 hand sign
illuminati confirmed.
If they donate back the IP it would put it in the public domain because work by the federal government is public domain.
I am a citizen so I am in the most important office. I support absolutist encryption.
Loves to hear himself blather on....
I think you like to do the same, judging by your multiple comments on this video.
+howdydutt1e #Agreed
I'm going to.miss him in the debates!!!! He schooled everyone. Obama!!!!!
If you take a shot every time Obama says "Uh" you will be passed out drunk 20 minutes into this video.
This man is too smart to serve just 2 terms. We gonna miss him for sure
Hiss him...yeah, like toe fungus
+Dipo Salaam He's a tyrant.... just because he's a democrat and black doesn't mean he's a good guy. He's a piece of shit that continues the Wars and he's a fucking dick.
+Glitch Digger love him or hate him, his record is far better than all last 4 Republican presidents combine. I'm not a Democrat. Compare and contrast. Despite the fact that Republicans promised to destroy him and reject every way for him to succeed, he still did a lot.
Dipo Salaam
I will not disagree with you that the Republican party and their according Presidents post-JFK have all been shit. They've been evil war mongering basrards. So are the Democratic Presidents... How can you sit here and really put emphasis on the contrasts and comparisons of two Puppets being held by the same hands of evil? Both parties are tools of the shadow governments. Listen to the very, very last speech that John F. Kennedy ever gave and come back to tell me that Republicans Vs. Democrats makes a substantial difference. JFK was a Democrat if that gives any credence to his last speech.
The "two party system" and bipartisanship is nowadays, no more than a scam. There's more than 2 ways to govern the United States and it's about time that people begin to understand that. Sick and tired of this crap.... I don't mean this in any condescending fashion at all, 100% nicely as possible, please take the opportunity to enlighten yourself to why the two party system, Republican *OR* Democrat.
He always seems to do the right thing in my opinion and as a Brit we would gladly accept you as prime minister on behalf of the British nation
What they don't understand is that if Apple really undermine iOS security, many other tech company will fill that void. Now you will also request the same thing to these companies, until there's no more tech companies in USA that doesn't comply. After all that, it's the companies outside of USA that will benefit from strong security in their software. Sometimes people don't think far enough that they justify these kind of actions. You are basically solving a problem of national security by creating another form of national security. From my perspective, that's not the way to go.
After reading many of the comments I'm reminded of one of my favourites quotes by Dale Carnegie “A man convinced against his will Is of the same opinion still” there are many on this thread who if Obama gave them water in a desert to save their life they would still have a problem with him. Then there are others who if he shitted in their mouth and said it taste good they would say it did.
The fact is no one is perfect, and if you listed what he said he understands no system is perfect. But just like he mentioned we make tradeoffs all the time. If a cop pulls you over and suspects contraband in your car, he has the right to search it, just like if they suspect you are a bad actor as he said with a warrant they can search your house. The digital world is just a new house or car. The difference is there is no door, so the challenge does we make one and if we do who has access to that door, consider on like the physical ones in the wrong hands anyone anywhere can get access. All these are questions we have to answer as technology evolves. If a missile was barrelling down on the east coast and the kill code was locked in someone's phone which the authorities physically had but could not get in to get them most would say a door should exist. Likewise, with the all seeing, all knowing NSA, most would want some assurance or safeguards that they are not being violated with or without their consent.
These are questions as a society we'll have to answer at some point, I also do agree with him we don't want to wait until something happens, then the fear of the public and lawmakers eager to please said public. Enacts crazy overreaching laws in a desperate time. That is how we ended up with the "Patriot Act" which we are still feeling the ramifications of to this day.
POTUS OBAMA, PLS 3 TERM WE NEED YOUR INTELIGENCE
38:00 is this really privacy vs security? I'd say it is security from hackers / burglars vs security from corrupt government officials (yes it happens sometimes).
+Pawel Magnowski I think the big fear from government isn't what it's doing now but if government is as untrustworthy as the soviet union 60 years from now. We don't want to risk enabling a bad state with more power. Also if private information is in any way centrally stored then you only need a key dishonest servant of governement to copy the information and publish it on the dark web or share it with organised crime, to create a disaster.
Where in the fuck is the J Cole performance????
What is this, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee Pt. 2?
Hahaha!!! Yes! You are the President. You are still my President. Please Come back & saved America.
Oof, that was the cringiest of clunky of openers ..
Director or no, a more dynamic person to introduce POTUS would have been advisable.
What have The Romans ever done for us (min. 22 approx)
I've always supported Obama, in any way possible, but today, I must -- unfortunately -- disagree with him. Encryption is important and must always remain important.
I love the Prez but you can't hack my brain...Why does hacking my phone mean anything?
eita handsome man this president uses
Obama was savage in this
I like Obama on just about anything but he needs more time on this encryption issue.
Why's the crowd laughing every few minutes
what's Steve Carell doing on stage..
At this moment Mr. President can I hack your mind?
why are his pants so short. lol. He had the presence of mind to pull up his socks.
It will be a sad day when his presidency ends.
We need direct democracy. The electoral college insures our voices are not heard. I used to settle for "the lesser of the evils" when voting. Why vote any more if your vote is not counted and our representative govt only really represents the interests of the corporations who back the bureaucrats? It's the illusion of freedom and choice in the U.S....Pepsi or Coke.
Pepsi and coke have different tastes. They are finite compared to the differences between coke and sprite. Yet, within a spectrum, they are different tastes.
He basically wants a backdoor into everything. He completely misses the core values of the constitution which are very absolute and clear. Welcome to the nwo technocratic police state of the US of A.
+Yourgrandma • Do you consider warrants a backdoor into everything?
I bibiro ya mpira
Hahaha!! That is why the haters are after you, because you are trying to solve every problem.
Sleepy, Exhausted or Depressed, POTUS didn't seem well in this Keynote... Low energy, to say the least, for any Festival.
That was the shortest, weakest, emotionless introduction I've ever heard. Did you just introduce the Principal at the elementary school or the Leader of the Free World? Geez..
+Kelvin Troy Johnson free world hahahahahahahahahahha
+Adam Jun past tense.
What do people see in him? He's dull, aloof, and oh-so-subtly arrogant. I cannot remain interested when he speaks even though I agree with the majority of things he says.
what a joke
I threw up 4 times in this video!
Он больша на клона похож, каждый раз смешит людей, а работать он собирается?
Trump 2016
Trump lost, Biden won and Barack Obama got the last laugh!!!
@@ORLANDOARIASORLANDO Bitch, Biden couldn't win a game of checkers, let a alone a presidential campaign. Let's count the legal votes. Otherwise STFU and get out.
@@joeschmo6499 You get out, because your dear Trump has lost reelection and Biden was declared winner officially, look at this, and keep crying, trumpsting piece of jerk: www.voanews.com/2020-usa-votes/biden-officially-secures-enough-electors-become-president
