    So, the political stuff is absolutely true, and I understand your point on that. But my biggest problem with the Academy goes deeper than that. The rule structure they have in place is specifically designed to discriminate against most films released around the planet. Qualifications range from where your movie is screened, projector resolution, how many critics review the movie, etc. As such, anything that's not an English language American film backed by a major studio has virtually no chance of even meeting the qualifications, let alone get nominated and win anything. For all their pandering of diversity and "progressive politics," the Academy and Hollywood as a whole showcase how they're nothing more than the oppressive establishment they claim to rally against. It's pretty damn insulting.

      @classicvideogoodies Před 2 lety +15

      I also hate their "one film per country" rule for the International Film Oscar, because many films today are multi-national collaborations. There is no real diversity in awards because the very purpose of giving awards is to separate some films from others and divide them into winners and non-winners, nominees and non-nominees. It is an exercise that always honors only a minority of films and ignores the totality. We should just ignore awards, polls, etc., and just look at the totality of film art.

Yeah, it’s nice being recognized and to get to say thank you, but to me I feel like some actors probably dont mind not getting awards because they love the craft more than a globe award. with that being said, I do think the awards were once awesome many years ago. What has ruined it most of all is the need to have a campaign for your film to win which really means you are giving an Oscar for the best campaigning which has nothing to do with the films. And tied to that, what has been dubbed 'Awards Season' is designed to maintain interest in the Oscars for a longer period and position itself as the biggest BRAND of awards. Though it increases exposure, it emphasises the win/lose aspect of things as being a measure of the quality of the movies and takes the discussion away from the movies themselves.

  • @tarikdingle1584

    For me, awards in general don’t matter. They don’t matter in the sense that they don’t make a film better or worse, but what they can do and have done is bring awareness to cinema at large, specifically world cinema like we saw in 2020 with PARASITE. Not only is PARASITE a great film, but it’s an important landmark in cinematic history, being the first foreign-language film to ever win Best Picture. That win was important to bring more awareness to international cinema.
    I still watch the Oscars, and probably will for as long as they exist, simply because I’m a tremendous lover of film and a lot of films I like/love get nominated each year, but I do agree that generally speaking, awards, including the Oscars, don’t matter.

      @@tahamohammedi5898if you read my comment thoroughly, you’d see that I said Parasite winning BP was important in the sense that the exposure the film received after the Oscars was bigger than I’m sure anyone could’ve imagined. Awards can be valuable for a film’s/filmmaker’s exposure, but winning or not winning awards doesn’t measure the quality of a film. They don’t matter in general bc for example, my second favorite film of all-time, DO THE RIGHT THING, wasn’t even nominated for BP and just bc it wasn’t nominated, in turn not winning, I don’t think it’s any less significant in the cinematic landscape. Some folks attach awards to quality - I do not. That’s my point.
      Also, don’t even get me started on all of the makeup acting wins over the years, which further proves my point about awards not actually being that significant as a measure of quality.

    You're so right. The Oscars have become way too political. Though I find it ironic that most people say they don't care about the Oscars, but they would either tune in to hate watch or make memes about it when the best thing to do is just not give them any attention. You are correct that it was around the mid-2010s where the Oscars started to decline. Or whenever the Weinstein scandal happened I think in 2017. All of a sudden, these actors who won Oscars because of Weinstein and knew of his exploits acted like they hated him all along. Then you have the new rules the Academy put in recently to only nominate films that meet their diversity requirements. It had to have this many minorities, women, LGBTQ, etc. It was no longer about artistic value and storytelling anymore. It's all about pandering and virtue signaling. The ratings of last year's Oscars don't lie. When Glenn Close twerking was the highlight of the entire show, you know it's bad. People are done with it. I remember when the Oscars was an event in my house. Now it's like "Oh, the Oscars were tonight?"

    Interesting to note that George C Scott famously refused the Oscar nomination for Patton, just as he had done for his nomination in 1962 for The Hustler. Even though he won for Patton, he became the first to reject his award stating, "The whole thing is a goddamn meat parade. I don't want any part of it." - Scott believed that every dramatic performance was unique and could not be compared to others. Out of all the arguments against the giving of awards for performance, I agree with that part. The same goes for music awards, or any other thing that can be deemed as an art form. How can you measure subjective experience? Especially if such art is lobbied and campaigned through a funded push for persuasion which negates the concept that such things as film can be regarded as art.

  • @92ninersboy
    @92ninersboy Před 2 lety +15

    Beautifully put! The Oscars are merely a platform for narcissism - virtue signaling is just another shallow ploy. For years they've been a glided turd - now they're not even gilded - they just put a sprinkle of fool's gold on top. Anyone with any kind of b.s. detector will find it repugnant. Just recently watched Ken Russell's The Devils (would love to see you review it if you can get a regional copy that plays in U.S - one's available in South Korea). This film is very political and also surreal and subversive - it would never get made today. It's also very appropriate for what's going on these days as to who are the real "devils" - something that's also timeless. Keep up the great work - love your honesty and guts.

    The thing I like most about the awards is that there are some films that, for a brief time, can gain a little of the spotlight, whether they have a chance of winning or not. Just yesterday, I first heard about a film called Flee which sounded very interesting, and was the first film to be nominated for Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Foreign Language Feature in the history of the awards. It may not win any of them, but I will definitely seek it out, and may not have if it had not been given this recognition.

Your insights regarding the Oscar minimization based on prefabricated didactics is refreshing. Someone should make a movie about Hegel's life. In it, we can see the dialectic between acclaim, intelligence, rivalry, and his mistreatment of illegitimate son, plus political upheaval, Napoleon, Goethe, becoming a philosophical superstar and turning into Goethe's Faust for real. All aspects of politics, relationships, rivalries could be shown... but will such a piece which would intrinsically display current issues be made when the veil of prepubescent habit becomes the anchor for Hollywood? Not in this climate of State supported conformist entertainment. I am quite impressed with your Insights and reflective analysis here as well as your other film critiques. Very well done!

    Very astute take, thank you. I used to enjoy the Oscars as cheesy fun and a guide who what films I missed over the year that might be worth catching up on. But its unwatchable now, totally cringeworthy. Everyone desperate to appear to be within that Overton window that gets narrower and narrower, and further away from what most people are interested in watching. And its even sadder that mainstream critics feel they have to fall in line. The universal praise for some very mediocre films that simply tick off a number of boxes is very telling (and somehow they don't seem to realise that people are noticing this and ignoring the critics even more).

    This is pretty reductive and a generalisation. Many many people who have won Oscars have “struggled “
    And plenty of people who have won Oscars aren’t just “virtual signalling” but genuinely have dedicated their lives to changing the world.
    Also, we really have no idea how celebrities use their money, so it’s not up to anyone to judge.
    But I do agree with much of this.

    There is one overriding principle in "Hollywood". You can never admit that you are just extremely fortunate, with flaws that are common to the rest of society. In other words, you are a hero, and people should recognize that that you are special. This is why they can be preachy. They believe, deep down, that they are better than us because they get payed to do nothing more complicated than engage in make-believe.

    This is a very random comment. I do not wish to be a pest, but I was wondering if you were ever going to review any of the following films;
    The Tenant 1976: you have previously(a long time ago) reviewed Repulsion and Rosemarys baby. Personally this film has always been my favourite of the three. I simply find myself connecting to this deeply personal horror of Kafkaesque proportions.
    Similarly, another Kafkaesque gem would be After Hours. I’ve seen some other request this one, so I think it would be a hit if you did it.
    I’ve heard you talk about Nights Of Cabiria(one of my absolute favourite films), but I have never heard you talk about some later Fellini film. I would really like to know your thoughts on 81/2.
    I would also love to hear your thoughts on a Kieslowski film and a Godard film. Also Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me(a very under appreciated work of Lynch)
    Im sure you’ve seen both these films. Im simply very curious to know what you think of them.

    I don't know how is it in the US, in my country the Oscar is still taken seriously.
    I don't see the Oscar win as an artistic achievement but rather something that is important for the global recognition of the films in the country.

    I definitely agree with everything you said but also another reason why nobody cares about the awards is because people have different taste, no matter what movie wins the award 99% of people are not going to agree with it because it’s not what they felt deserves to win that award. I stopped watching those types of award shows when I was like 10 years old in the early 90s because the movies I like wasn’t winning and still to this day movies I like don’t win so therefore I don’t agree with them and the majority of people are just like me.

    I feel exactly the same. I, too, have a love-hate relationship with the Academy Awards, and for reason.
    Many of the greatest films ever made are either overlooked at the Oscars, or outright shunned. Sure, there are some things the Academy has done right, but it's no constant. Sure, an Oscar nomination or even a win is an achievement in itself and a proven career-booster (more often than not)... but, that being said, Oscar or not, you're only as good as your last picture, sociopolitical ambition aside. I can't stress that enough.
    It's not well-known that one of the AMPAS' founding members was Louis B. Mayer, who was not only the chief executive of what once was the largest, most lauded, and most powerful film studio in the world but was Chairman of the California Republican Party---so the Academy is going to be conservative and, consequentially, elitist by design. The statuette itself was designed by the head of MGM's own art department.
    The Academy Awards are, at best, a middle-of-the-road, centrist, showbiz-centric affair. They almost always have been. So many of the greatest artists that ever got in front of, or behind, a camera, don't get the recognition due them. Neither Kubrick; nor Welles; nor Kurosawa; nor Tarkovsky; nor Antonioni; nor The Archers ever won an Oscar for directing. Pulp Fiction lost Best Picture to Forrest Gump (not that it's a bad film, but Pulp Fiction is very much the stronger of the two). Similarly, Max Fleischer never won an Oscar for his cartoons. His adaptation of Superman is still an absolute masterpiece of animation. As much recognition as the Academy heaped upon Disney (26 wins out of 59 nominations, STILL an all-time record), his first five animated features should have been no-brainer Best Picture contenders but were not even nominated in that category.
    I could go on, but I don't have to.

    My hot take on why the Oscars are no longer interesting is because the studios have created a market in which people only watch big budget blockbusters but the Oscars ignore them.
    I'm not here to argue they should be handing Oscars to the MCU but they need to create a situation in which it's possible the best picture winner could also be among the biggest box office draws of the years.
    A lot of people will eventually see the best picture nominees but not in theatres. Instead they'll wait for streaming because they don't feel films like Belfast are worth the cost of theatre tickets, snacks, gas money and even potentially a baby sitter so they wait for streaming or TV.
    I'm rambling but my basic point by pushing blockbusters all year round the studios have made it that the best picture nominees never fully enter the public consciousness and if they do its after the ceremony
