Robert Millar is right up there at the top of Britain's cycling greats , I remember seeing him on a small climb in a time trial in the 92 Tour just south of Paris , and all the locals gave him a fantastic reception as he went past , possibly on a par with the French , to go and live in another country and gain that amount of respect shows how good he was , he was a one off , and how he now wants to live his life is fantastic , and his legacy will be there for all time

Why is there not a statue up to this man in Glasgow? Mind you he probably wouldn't want that!! What a hero! All the best, Robert. Hope you are well.

This fella personified everything that was great about 80's cycling, a truly golden era, Fignon,Kelly,Roche,Lemond,Millar,Van de Poel, Mottet,Delgado
Millar was a real class Individual. When he left the sport he didn't go in for the media circus of talk shows and showing up at Tours, no, he went his own way. B Wiggins may have reached that 4th spot this year but Millar would have destroyed him in any Mountain climb, he was that pure a climber.

Strange how he could walk around his home town completely unknown at that time...one of the mysteries of British sport...HOW and WHY was he not acknowledged?? in 1984 BBC sports personality of the year he got no mention at all!!!! unbelievable

Yeah, thanks for sharing this viddy.
I had the good fortune to collaborate with Millar in 1991 when I was working for a charity organisation in Glasgow. Lovely man, very generous and very easy to talk to. At least in Spain, where I live now, he gets the respect he deserves as one of the best cyclists of his era, his rivalry with Delgado is thought of as similar to the tussles Indurain had with Rominger.
Millar was rated 66th in Spain's list of the best cyclists of 20thC-NO other Brits appear

Thanks for this, what a fantastic piece of film! I have nothing but empathy and admiration for Robert Millar. Let's hope that the privacy he gets from being unrecognised for his incredible achievements is some kind of reward for him!

Ok so he wanted to be left alone when he was riding and also now in retirement BUT the sporting media NEVER mention his name at all not even in cycling circles, a disgrace on British sporting history one of the TRUE greats...never mentioned anywhere or by anybody. Terrible treatment of a fantastic athlete

WELLBRAN in fairness, he probably doesn't give a hoot. He's his own person with nothing to prove . 👍

A remarkable person with single minded attitude to succeed. All the more difficult due to the Glasgow culture of football and religious bigotry. Cycling is not part of Glasows sporting culture and motorists are not tolerant of cyclists there unlike on the continent. So his achievements in light of these are remarkable

Why would someone leave this place and spend all day cycling thru French countryside? It’s a mystery to me.
