i'd been stagnating on improving in pixel art for years, and ever since i've started watching your videos i've improved massively (not just me being an arrogant prick, i've been showing off my art alot recently and people seem to really like it- also i now have the confidence to actually show my art off now thanks to you lmao). your videos are so amazing, i really do hope you don't stop!
also, i couldn't say my favorite character sprite of all time cuz it's just not really something i've thought about, but out of your characters i really like your stone golem that you did recently.
That’s amazing and so awesome that Brandon helped you so much! He’s an inspiration to us all!
Wake up bro, new BJG vid!
Ngl, Hulk feels smaller when you compile him with others
Thats pretty funny now that you've pointed it out lol
Some of the level decoration sprite work in the original Worms is great, Metal Slug 1 has brill enemy and player sprites and finally Jazz Jackrabbit for DOS reads great with its bright colours and style. Great vid as always!
Ooh neat I had never heard of Jazz Jackrabbit - getting kind of a Bucky O'Hare meets Sonic (level design) in the styling from what I'm seeing :D
jazz jackrabbit, damn. now that's a man of culture.
@@blackcitadel37 Jazz Jackrabbit was the game that came with my very first gaming PC (not that they were really called that back then). Awesome game.
Sequel was really fun too. Remember the sprites seeming really high definition at the time.
Clicked as soon as I saw the notification
It's great to see all your work together like this, it really shows off the breadth of your skills.
My favourite character sprite has always been red from the original pokémon games, because it's the first time I properly realised that game art was just pictures made of tiny squares!
I can vividly remember squinting at my game boy screen, to copy the sprite, pixel by pixel, on to graph paper, and into MSPaint on my computer.
seeing all of these sprites together is honesty so nostalgic!
Side note: I’ve been doing sprite art for years now and haven’t improved noticeably, until I started to watch your videos… Thanks for everything!
symphony of the night, metal slug, and Wario Land 4 have my favorite sprite art
I'm starting pixel art and these videos help me a whole lot. Thank you. And remember, keep up the good work.
@[Self] [Insert] You too Fellow Co-Pixel-Artist. Keep up the work and patience. Good luck on your Pixel-Art journey.
@[Self] [Insert] :)
I thoroughly love the battle scene sprites from the Shining Force games and would to see you do a battle scene between Link and Dark Beast Ganon from Breath of the Wild in that style. Upon seeing the Alucard sprite, I could see a battle scene between him and Dracula in that style as well.
my favorite sprite atm has gotta be robo-ky from guilty gear, especially Isuka. he can be given the moves of other characters in Isuka, and the sheer variety and creativity in what he can copy and how he pulls it off without the powers and weapons the other fighters have makes him so fun to look at. the overall spritework in SFIII is also really good, the sheer level of detail and smoothness of animation couldn't have been easy to pull off in that era, or even nowadays, really.
when you asked our favourite sprites I thought you were talking about the sprites you made, and honestly I love the super famicom control team and the fighter gummies, the idea of creating such interesting and creative characters out of such simple things like candy and buttons on a controller is so amazing for me I wish I could do the same
great to see your progression so far! been loving all the tutorials and commentary every since the channel came up. thank you for the great content and I hope you keep having fun making all these amazing pixel artworks!
Keep up the great content! You demonstrating your approach to designing sprites has helped me a lot!
Great Job as always. Every time I feel like I have a grip on pixel art, you upload a new video and I learn something new or see things in a new light. I love it.
I love that you used Endless Duel as an example, I've always thought that game had some of the best pixel art on the SNES (especially that intro)
Love your channel, Brandon! You always do such a great job on your videos. I discovered you a few months ago and have been tearing through all of them.
I don't know my favorite, but a lot of the sprite work from the older Marvel vs. Capcom games definitely come to mind, so good pick with Spidey.
It's hard to pick a favorite! But I'm really fond of just about everything in Mega Man ZX and ZX Advent, and I love the colors and overall vibe of Breath of Fire IV's battle sprites.
Great video. Seeing all the sprites really puts everything you talk about into perspective. I can really see how smaller sprites can be cuter.
By far my favourite sprites are the haribo fighters. They just feel retro in that cool nostalgic way (even though I never even grew up with a game boy colour). I can’t wait to see what other sprites we’ll see in the future :)
Me too, I really like his oc's
Always a delight to see these analysis/discussion videos! I'd say my current favorite sprite works come from Stardew Valley and River City Girls. Can't pick just one sprite though haha
love your detailed explanation!
Great video James! Again thx for your help to all futur pixel creator who begin on this way (incuding me)!
Favourite sprites are all the Grim Girl Hana Sprites, they have such an amazing vibe and I wish I could see them in a fully fleshed out game one day
Sonic from Sonic Advance 3 is a great one. Also your videos are amazing. I really want to do pixel art after watching them
Been a while since I've watched one of these! Hope you've been doing well dude. Planning to start getting back into my projects, and also work on pixel art again too. (This vid was quite helpful for that haha). Your tone seems calmer btw! xD
The information you provide us is so amazing! Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
(Also my favorite sprite is Sam from Eastward. Though I've falling in love with that game so I maybe a little bias.)
It's quite hard to just pick a favorite sprite, I'd just say in general, I love the pixel art in Risk of Rain, Stardew Valley, and lot from the GBA era of games. Risk of Rain's pixel art really gives a since of scaled, and is a great example of tiny sprite work, with a lot of the enemies and characters being no more then 10 pixels tall. Stardew valley, just has a great homemade feel to it. With Eric have no prior pixel art experience, he learned as he made the game. And GBA sprites are just awesome with how many different styles there are, from Fire Emblem to Pokemon, to Mario and Luigi. All amazing stuff.
I'm a big fan of the 16ish pixel height because it forces the artist to abstract features and it's always fun to see how people "solve" how to convey an object at that resolution
great video as always!
Wow it's cool to see all these sprites in one space, what a nice diverse range of styles :D Thanks for the breakdown too :)
Yeah it was fun to compile and see all the different sizes/styles together like this. Had to resist touching up some of the older work haha 😅
@@BJGpixel Would make a killer poster!!! hahah Yeah I can definitely feel that, I think I avoid looking at older work for this reason :'D
I really love the stone golem sprite! Looks fabulous and really makes me wanna try some higher resolution pixel art with more details!
Nice work! ❤️✨
Not you putting the tiny samurai next the giant robot ahauahau I don't know why, but it looked so funny
Great video as always! Some really cool sprites are the fire emblem charecter portrait and gt advance 3 cars.
i really love your super nintendo controller sprite. so sleek!
Fantastic stuff!
Wow you just downloaded this today?? I just found you. Gotta say this is one of the best vids I've seen on pixel art
Favourite sprite work of all time?
anything from metal slug (subpixel is gorgeous in those games)
I personnally love the breath of fire 4 sprites. i wanna get better at that style for a game i wanna make ^^ your videos are just amazing and full of details, i used to be like. selecting the pixel amount first and then having always similar results. but proportion depending on what look you wanna achieve is just nice information to have. kudos to you
p.s still cant believe you use a trackpad. wow
Good choices on fave sprites. Hard to think of others when you mention those. I am quite fond of the FF Tactics sprites.
I really like these videos. I'm not sure if I want to go into pixel design or not yet but I really enjoy seeing the workflow.
My fave sprites are a bit basic but I love Sonic, Mario and crash bandicoot as they're the highlight of my youth gameplay but also because I think they really are fun and we'll drawn.
My all-time favorite of yours are the Princess Mononoke sprites
my favorite of yours is easily the princess mononoke ashitaka/san sprite. amazing sprites from one of my favorite movies of all time
Wow! This gives me a great idea of varying looks because when I try to convert a drawing into pixel art it never seems to go how I imaged it, this honestly gives me that kinda push to just draw it out in pixels rather than trying to just look off of a physical drawing to see what I get as that's what I typically do
5:08 if only CZcams still did annotations. That'd be a perfect way to say "hey, you like that sprite? Here's the video"
Favourite sprites? Basically anything from Jojo Heritage for the Future. The sprites are real clean, the animations are stylish and smooth, and the poses are just *chef's kiss*. There's so much personality and style in each sprite.
Kakyoin's taunt, Star Platinum's hand in Jotaro's idle stance, Rush punches clashes, time stop shenanigans, S.DIO's counter, the K.O. portraits that get sliced up or shot at depending on the final blow.
HFTF is just gorgeous. _Busted AF_ but gorgeous.
And some of my all time favourite pixel art is from Front Mission on the Snes and Bahamur Dragoon.
Great video!
Iris’s Sprite set in X4, as well as the expansion by FxFreitas, are just great and favorites of mine. They manage to capture how delicate and innocent she is even at that resolution.
This was very helpful.
inspiring journey!
1. Frog (Chrono Trigger)
2. Alex (Street Fighter 3)
3. Astro (Astro Boy: Omega Factor)
Really enjoyed this!
Solid list! Huge fan of Frog as well! :D
@@BJGpixel Thanks! I love your work!
I'm a new sub and I love yourwork
I freaking love tiny squares.
Super interesting! :D
I know this is a bit older but I love your work and how you simply show your process.
My 3 favorites are:
1) Rock Golom
2) Gameboy character 2 bit color (most recent post). I like how you can make something so simple into great detail.
3) Blade Runner. Just watched that movie.
Keep up the good work.
You should make this same video only with portraits.
I love the spite work in Soul nomad and the world eaters. I wonder if he can analyze that. I would love to see it.
My favorite sprite of all time has to be Guy from the SFA series, but the entire cast of Chrono Trigger is also amazing. Oh! The characters in River City Girls are also top-notch.
crono's running animation is reallyy bad
Earthworm Jim has my favorite spritework. It's weird how they did it though, instead of just making a pixel sprite, they made full on drawings and then digitized, then crunched them down to pixel art. Crazy
Thank you, Brandon, that was very informative and helpful! I'm in the middle of designing and drawing some pixel DnD characters (avatars for a modern app, I have a thin space of weird proportion for them: 54x89px) and your experience helps me a lot! Great idea for a video! I'd like to see some videos of you trying to create the same character, in the same pose, in different heights and outline styles - of course if you found it fun enough for you :)
I like what you said about no-outline-style being connected with more mature visuals. I think that's very true. This always reminds me of such games like Another World (or Out Of This World) or Prince of Persia. Have you ever played or analysed the game Another World? It's beautiful both visually and storywise :)
Thanks dude! That's a great idea to tackle the same character in different stylistic approaches, will have to keep that in mind! It's funny you mention Another World, because I was reading about that just a few weeks ago - haven't had the opportunity to play it (or source it for that matter...) but the visuals are stunning and it looks like the kind of thing that was ahead of it's time in a way. Gonna have to get around to that one! :D
my favourite sprites are from the game Metal Gear: Ghost Babel on the Game Boy Colour. Both the tiny character sprites and the larger art sprites are AMAZING.
How do you make them move?
I really like the sprites from the sonic advance series
I have been wondering: Where do you stand on voxel art? Like making 2.5D or full on 3D "pixel" art?
Love it! I follow a few artists that make really cool voxel pieces, and have had a few people translate my pixel art into voxel. I've always meant to try MagicaVoxel for myself; might make for a neat video one day!
@@BJGpixel Magicavoxel is exactly what I use. MagicaCGS is also an interesting new tool for modelling though I am not there yet skill wise to use it and it isn't the art direction for my game project.
They're isometric, but I'm a really big fan of the overworld Raposa sprites from Drawn to Life: Two Realms, especially Jowee. They look so good.
Out of curiosity, does anyone have a link to the video (if there is one) where Brandon makes the guitarist and the other 19 px tall sprite that sort of looks like a singer? They look amazing and don't recall seeing it.
My favorite sprites are Donatello from Turtles in Time and basically anything from Chrono Trigger.
Here you go! czcams.com/video/eCa9yLcYB1E/video.html
100% on board with all the sprite work from those games as well :D Have you seen the trailers for Shredder's Revenge? Looks like such a great update/homage to the Turtles in Time styling
I personally love the look of the GBA and DS era Castlevania games, especially the ones with Soma Cruz. Those seem to really push the boundaries of what's possible.
I've been practicing that 'painterly' approach for years now, but it's just SO DIFFICULT!!!
Eagle from Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Johnny from Guilty Gear X are probably my favorite sprites from the ones in my mind rn
In no particular order mine are the pink drifter from hyper light drifter, Theo from Celeste, and John from Eastward.
Lil Yasuo sprite is killin me.
Is there a video on the ff7 polygon sprites??
ty
I've always been a fan of the Sprite work for Konami's Sunset Riders. Of course the Arcade had more colors, but the SNES version was still really great.
Blasphemous, Hyperlight Drifter and Metroid Fusion are some of my favorite styles. Would love to see you analyze or extrapolate the art in blasphemous, or art like it.
I really like the gen 3 and 5 pokemon sprites.
Thanks bro for doing this videos ,
I was wondering is there a video on Mario bros evolution ?
i really like Rogue sprite from Marvel vs Capcom 2
love your vids and is it possible that you could do a sprite analysis on the game lemmings? I've always been interested on the art of that game, thanks
I know I'm slightly late and no one will see this but my favorite sprites are: 1) Plague Knight from Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, 2) The Metal Sonic Sprite from Sonic 2 (and Knuckles,) and 3) Dig Dug.
Your. Art. Is. Amusing.
Yo your ff7 classic cloud strife sprite is mad cool looking. I don’t have a favorite sprite. Gotta think about it. But out of all yours I like the Motoko from ghost in the shell and your cloud.
I really like Soma's sprite from Castlevania Aria of Sorrow
That's a great one - it's awesome seeing the art for that entire game because it captures the detailed look of Symphony of the Night but scaled into the GBA resolution
I'm not sure about picking specific favorite sprite, but if we were to talk about pixel art style and quality in a whole game, I'd say King of Fighters 13 reigns supreme
I would love to see how you would tackle a mvc Spider-Man or any Capcom fighting game style. This is currently what I'm studying for fun.
Maybe not my favorite, but I like in Ace Attorney Investigations how each character has their full portrait sprites and their mini sprites to walk around and investigate
I always loved Chronotrigger sprites
This is so awesome to see! All your work you've created and recorded since the beginning man.
Cool
after palying eastward i started to do pixel art lol at the begining i had problems with the sizes... bu tnow im pretty good to go... still hard to decide on the style there are so many good styles..
I've always loved the Lucasarts games and their art styles. Sam & Max too 😎
Ooh, an all time fav sprite is hard to pick! With so many diff styles and contexts, I'm not sure if I can confidently say! I think the Boba Fett sprite might be my fav from this collection 😁
Maybe the sprite for Giratina's distortion form in Pokemon Platinum. It looks super cool and I have fond memories of getting super frustrated trying to capture it 😅
Oh thanks for picking one from my collection too! 😊 Wow just looked up Giratina - their entire evolution has some really cool designs, I can imagine that being an intense capture! I often realize how far behind I am in generations of Pokemon; really need to catch up on a lot of the DS- and GBA-era games because there's really great designs and pixel art to be found there (in addition to the story also)!
@@BJGpixel Haha I think Platinum is the only one I fully played through but I STILL see content about it to this day! People are still streaming it and I've seen a couple of nuzlocke challenges for it 😁
@@CKTDanny that's really cool - especially if one were to jump into those games at this point, it's nice to know there's still such an active community :D
@@BJGpixel Ikr! There's something very wholesome about seeing old game communities that won't leave 😌
Cara obrigado, Im From Brazil, thx for this video with legends
I think my favorite sprites are some of the giant bosses in Breath of Fire III. That whole game has amazing sprite work.
Gen 3 Pokemon games battle sprites are awesome!
Cool Thumbnail
Luigi from Mario and Luigi Superstar saga is definitely my favorite sprite of all
1k likes and no dislikes
Personally, I really enjoy the sprites from Monster World IV (the original, not the remake) which has a decent level of detail, but has its own unique style to it.
kirby is my fave
