32 X 32 does not take 4 times as long. That there is a misconception. It really depends on what you're going for. If the art in question is very heavy on detail then I might argue yes, otherwise sometime it's actually easier to work at a slightly higher resolution. I actually find it hard to limit myself to 16x16 where there are so many constraints and every pixel can make or break what you're creating.
yes. i usually can't make a character smaller than 32x32 without giving up, but i can make a well drawn character in a 50x100 box in about an hour because it's easier on my brain. so it is definitely easier. although time spent, as you said, does depend on detail.
@@MG-mh8xp yeah but for animation , you would take 20 hours to make 20 frames for a walk cycle maybe , but in 16x16 you it is just a matter of moving 2 pixels , you can do the animation in few minutes
@@hamza-trabelsi true. But i don't think I was talking about animation.
@@MG-mh8xp but that's why he said it takes more time, it's not just to make one sprite it becomes so much when trying to animate
definitely how it is for me. I find coming from regular size digital art to pixel art I had to start small and work my way down instead of the other way around.

I struggle with perspective a lot, even when I manage to draw a top-down character walking down, when I try to make them turn around it always end up losing the perspective and looking like a side scroller
I don't think this is a perspective issue, perspective means drawing things bigger which are closer to the eye - this is more just a problem with not being able to see the 3d shape at an angle
Try drawing the head like a minecraft head - a cube with a defined top & side, brighter on the top due to the light source - this is how i did it to get used to the angle. For some reason your brain just starts to see it from the right angle, and it becomes much easier to fill the details in & transform it into a non-minecraft head afterwards. After a while you can skip the cube step.
I'd highly recommend this, i used to have the exact same problem!
p.s. if your head looks correct but the body still looks like a side scroller, select & drag the body down a couple pixels. You'd be surprised at how much the body should be covered given a normal top-down rpg view, especially since rpgs normally enlarge the heads due to small resolutions
I have this issue too! I would recommend drawing a character where you heavily reference from another game's art just to get a feel for it. Also, for me, making characters in a lower resolution makes perspective a bit easier.
I struggle with making turnarounds for characters. The side view is tricky.
Ok I think I can make a perspective video.
my same problem with the other thing that the game i'm working on is a platformer
so every character needs to look side ways at one point
@@PeterMilko Did you ever make a perspective video?
@@PeterMilko Same here, always struggle with turnarounds.
Sideview is the easiest for me
Pete is what I didn't know I needed, but actually needed.
I mostly struggle with the "What should I make?" and "How should I make it?"
Sounds like you struggle with inspiration.
Go spend a day or two just browsing Pinterest and see if something calls out to you. I know this comment was 4 months ago so hope you made it through your block
Actually still didn't, I'm too busy with school stuffs. Maybe after School I guess...
@@altos1208 i heard advice somewhere once that if you are struggling with inspiration, find something simple to draw and draw it 10+ times in different ways. Use your imagination. Inspiration comes with action, not always from thought. You got it buddy
@@Jay-og4yb Thank you! This made me more motivated.
My struggle right now is the basics! I'm taking on learning pixel art as a hobby-supplement to my more formal education in games design/programming, just got aseprite today and got to work making* (*see 'attempting to make') an owl in the three different styles shown in the video. Was a fun way of getting used to the software and a good way of teaching that nothing will be perfect on the first try :).
This is awesome man! Thank you!
Everything I needed in one video and I've watched a ton
You know Steen too! I use to play with him when we were kids online. Small world
Another great episode mate!! Love following your stuff and cant wait for Dwerve
Thanks
Thanks very much for another great tutorial video! Have followed your Pintrest and itch :D You've got me into Pixel art more than ever before !!
great video man, keep the good work.
I love your energy!
I have the utmost respect for this young man.
Very helpful. I've been looking for a good set of tutorial videos like this one!
:)
I love your energy, subbed.
I appreciate that!
I know its 3 years later but I finally started myself now and watching all your content again! ❤️
Sweet! I just finished Dwerve so I have more time to make videos now.
@@PeterMilko congrats! Game dev is a marathon. Mad respect
Love the intro! hahaha now I know I can do this even though I suck.
Also did NOT know about twitters bookmark feature! Thank you!
also who would be able to NOT check out your itch with your beanie covering half your face xD
Hehe thanks.
Cool one!. I've just started learning to develop games and wanted to do a pixel art style. So glad I found your channel. Gonna binge watch and practice this
Hyperlight Drifter has AMAZING pixel art, I love its style.
Thanks Bud, Good Stuff!
Keep up the good work man
This dude looks like the younger, cooler version of Tommy Wiseau. Also shading the outline is top notch
Hey, can you maybe make a 101 about how to drop shadows at the floor best in pixel art?
LOL You are so comfortable with yourself and seems being on cam. Loving listening to you over a lot of the more... "professional" feeling... Business-like? paid courses that cost like 200+ I hope you are killing it out there. ^.^
Thanks, that was a nice compliment. Sadly Im not killing it, CZcams pays me like $90 a month but there is hope for me if you support my video game
www.kickstarter.com/projects/petermilko/the-last-phoenix
I struggle with both design and coloring i am just getting started btw. Thanks
I struggle on creating an outline of a character and hair
Just found out about you when learning about pixel art. I'm currently struggling a lot with outlines as the use of Darker colored outlines and plain black outlines. I've seen in some of your videos you combine the two types of outline and made the art a lot better. Is there a technique where you should and shouldnt use darker outlines or black outlines? how do you mix the two is what im saying
Thanks. time to get started :o
Tilemaps top down and the edges of the grass along with the coloring of the dirt / grass / water
COLORINGGG like which colors do I use to convey what I want and modifying it in aesprite I have no idea how to do that...and PERPECTIVEEE like how to they make it look isometric but like smooth and natural SHEESH.
Love the pokeball mug
Thank you for this series 🙏🏻 Can’t wait to start creating my own game assets
Guess my struggle is always with the colors, choosing a palette, shading, antialiasing, etc.
I started working on a top down, 8 directional character, the first frame of him facing down looks awesome but it also looks like an orthographic straight on view rather than top down one and trying to get the 8 directions right is proving difficult, I basically discovered a mountain of animation requirements.
Have you done or could you do an 8 directional tut.
Nice job keep up the work
What I struggle the most Pete is animating a run/walk cycle
Thank you so much!
love your hair maan
I struggle so much with Shading and Perspective. Since they both goes hand on hand my things looks as flat as my screen.
Moon lighter yeah! im basing my game on octopath traveler
I'm super new to pixel art and I love it but I have no idea where to start or what to learn first. My drawing skills are a bit on the doodling side so I don't know if that'll be a deficit or not.
Go to my pixel art playlist and go in order :)
Thank you!
Fuck yeah Pixel Pete, you da best!
7:22 cheers for the shout out haha.
I mostly struggle on how my characters should look like, and how should I make my art less similar to my references/inspiration.
shading is by far what I struggle the most with, its absurdly hard xD
very good tutorial. thanks master :-)
thanks for watching! Hope you play The Last Phoenix when I finish it :)
colors like shades not sure if i should be thinking about lightning
for a small sprite
i dont know much about oixel art i wanna be able to make assrts for games
would cool for a vid that breaks down most common technicas in pickel art and animation techniquess idk
I struggle with human character design I already have references but for some reason I cannot apply my reference I don't know where to start.
Thanks!
Hard to hear with your microphone but love the video! Gave it a thumbs up!
This is very nice. Thanks so much for the content!
Perspective!
Man Tommy Wiseau does Pixel Art. Incredible he apparently lost the Accent too! Thanks this was a Great Course.
And I don't even need to speed up the video. Very nice
I'm starting to learn pixel art and I can say I struggle with everything: color theory, shadows, everything, but I hope I can learn something here. I started looking for good channels to learn pixel art and I found yours is one of the best.
I mostly struggle getting my character look nice in 32x32. I usually draw the sketch in flash and export as 32x32 for aseprite. Are there any tuts where head and body is seperate and how would that be used in games?
As I have heard that game tiles have to be same size like if my chara is 32x32 and if its off maybe the character messes up with everything else?
What song did you use in this video? I wanna listen to it again lol
The music got my slappin n clappin my cheeks 🦔💨
I'm learning pixelart now and boy, coloring has been an issue lol! Like, i suck drawing perspective digitally but making characters and coloring is delightful, and doing perspective is pixelart is awesome! But coloring is a draaaaaaag nyahahaha (and i draw the characters before the pixelart, so it's pretty easy)
Looool love that intro
I have prolemb with color, i cant choose pf color, only go 4 1bit
Awesome and informative. My bear looks like a mouse, but I couldn't have made this awesome bear mouse without you. Cool pokeball cup btw lol
I could relate as my bear looks like a raccoon. 😅
i liked the bear but how would you go about animating those tiny little legs if he wanted to move around?
I struggle with making the character looking in a certain direction instead of facing at the screen.
I struggle a lot when trying to just create something, im reasonably new to pixel art and i just really cant make a lot of stuff on my own and that kinda puts me down because i really wanted to be able to make something myself just looking at something once or twice for inspiration not looking almost pixel by pixel like i do sometimes... :/
I struggle exactly what you said with the character design, I was using a 64x64 sprite and animation too tedious
I'm just trying to get started any suggestions, tips, or advice?
Using yoshi's island sound effects - instant like
Fantastic
I wish i could be so good like u :3
I really want to make a game in the Game-boy style (4 colors) but i struggle with the sprites wich can only have 3 colors. Do you have any tips for a set colorsceme?
Yeah I can make a video on that topic
Thanks!
i just noticed the xp bar my god thats clever lol
thanks, i removed it in future videos because no one noticed but now you make me want to add it back lol
@@PeterMilko yess keep it before swomeone else takes it
I struggle with perspective D:
The most trouble I have is making a character that doesn’t have the big head look to it and conveying detail because it’s hard to fit so much into something so little. That doesn’t look too cartoony
Dwerve is 16x16 and we went for a less cartoony look. It is extremely advanced but I will cover it in a future lesson.
Pixel Pete Awesome!!!
I have a problem with the layers on aseprite 'cause I tried to color in another layer but it colored the whole canvass. Hhhhhhhh it makes me uncomfortable to do all things in 1 layer ^^;
There's a setting for the paint bucket tool, if you click on the settings icon and then "Refer visible layers" then it will fill as if everything was on one layer
i struggle with coloring, design, creativity and perspective and i cannot even start drawing at all why am i watching this
well. in old times they made composite sprites, nes and even gameboy are some great examples, using 8x8 pixels but compositing 4 sprites together for the player character for example. I think Metroid did this a lot.
ye its crazy but also cool
@@PeterMilko i mean we don't have to use that limitation anymore theese days, but it's nice to note anyways.
BTW. You should link your pinterest I couldn't find it.
Can we do pixel art with a mouse?
Yoh bro, nice tutorial, one of my biggest problems is colouring outlines, i cant get it right, and people complains about my black outline, but sometimes (most of the time) i do it that way cuz i love it, i grow up with capcom games, games that use black outline on almost every game, megaman, duck tales, chip and dale, nemo, and i love them all, it is bad to use black outline if you like it so much? Even if you dont use it so much on the insides?
That's ok, it's a style. I will make a future video about different line styles.
@@PeterMilko tnxs cuz i like it and some people no, and they say i should change it U_U
Email me the sprites and I will give you feedback.
@@PeterMilko we are in the same pixelarts facebook groups, you may already see them, im "David Rodriguez"
Say, what palette do you use?
Hi so I've started to use Aseprite for the 1st time today as I've dabbled with Unity & would like to create something in the pixel art style, it seems easier to learn the pixel art with Aseprite rather than PS, I've created a warrior type of charature im happy with but with a Hammer & shield he's slight beyond the 16 x16 pixels horizontally...this might sound really stupid, I'm not a design novice but I'm am in the pixel art style, but I guess that makes actual difference when using an asset in say Unity your purely using the size constraints to help beginners learn & familiarise themselves with the style?
Unity has a grid system you can use. Its useful for making tile maps. So when you make a tile map it needs to fit into the grid size you set. You can make a 20x20 grid if you want. However if you buy assets online often they are 16x16 or 32x32 so keep that in mind.
Great will do thanks, and thanks for the reply sir ⭐👍
Oh & love the tutorial videos btw really helpful & well explained👍
I started making outlines of different colors. I have no art bacground and would need help in that and color in general
Ok sure, ill make a video about how I find colors etc
@@PeterMilko I mostly work with palletes, it's my main problem
I like him, I watch him

Some tutorial for sprite for platform game?
Good tutorial
I struggling with tilemaps for indoors.
Bricks for walls seems easy, but other types of construction (like tiles, flat color wall, get awful in pixel art. Seems that only bricks work.
Props can assist
I struggle with perspective for sure. I think most people do. And I am a 3d modeller, but I specialize in architectural models.
With characters there is so much that can be incorrect, I get lost in it.
I have already drawn my own characters all I need is a story for the games
We hired a writer to help us with "Dwerve"
I suck at character design, I feel I'm good at environments though (Tileset, buildings, trees aw)
i’m watching far after the release of the video but i primarily struggle with characters
Anyone know what the game at 0:40 is?
flint hook
I'm just so bad at this, I can never get it right, the shapes, shading, colour etc...
