  • Mango breeding or hybridization is a fascinating topic, one that has many pitfalls and challenges and a long history of involvement from professional horticulturalist and backyard growers.
    Every breeding program is different and as Alex explains different growers will evaluate mangoes differently and perhaps value certain characteristics more than others but in all breeding programs flavor,disease resistance, productivity etc of the cultivar are important considerations. And there are many, many more.

      @TropicalAcresFarms Thank you Alex! You are one of the few mango experts if not the only one that has ever address any of the growing conditions in California.

    I have a Mango breeding project happening here in Southern California-
    Focusing on vigor and cold tolerance as well as flavor. Here in California we need the most aggressive growing varieties that produce on our weather schedule more consistently.
    I’m also implementing epigenetic aspects to it by selecting seeds from Mango’s that were already grown in our environment that way the seeds have been programmed for the area more efficiently.

    How do you create new variety? Is it simply by pollinating a variety with another variety?

    • @TropicalAcresFarms
      @TropicalAcresFarms Před 5 měsíci +2

      Yes, and they can self-pollinate as well. So you can get “Haden x Haden”, for example, and it’s still a hybrid.

    Humans can’t help themselves but to mess with nature and stuff things up , if I see any verity mangoes introduced in Australia I won’t be buying them , the mangoes we have are the absolute best in flavour and size they have always been , we have had variety’s from other country’s and they are awful , the colours look really good but flavour was crap , I suspect they where hydrides , if it isn’t broken why try and fix it , leave things alone.

      Kensington Pride is a hybrid of some sort. I’m sure that doesn’t stop you from eating them.

      @UberGastronomer Před 5 měsíci +4

      There are no native mangoes in Australia. Every mango you have ever eaten has come from another country.

      We don't have native mangos in Aus. Even the Bowen is a hybrid of an indian mango. The honey gold is also a hybrid. The Palmer which is also grown a bit commercially is a hybrid from breeding program in Florida....so certainly good to some new flavours :)
