  • Alex at Tropical Acres Tells us about The Orange Sherbet Mango.
    You can order the mango, the tree, or the budwood for the Orange Sherbet Mango from
    www.tropicalac...
    This mango is from the breeding program of Gary Zill of Boynton Beach, FL (planting # G-32). It was a seedling of Lemon Meringue, making it a sibling of the Lemon Zest mango.
    The fruit is medium-sized, with an oval-oblong shape, turning yellow at maturity with orange fiberless flesh. The flavor is incredibly rich and sweet with a strong, complex orange-citrus candy flavor. The seed is polyembryonic.
    The trees are moderately vigorous growers and good producers. We have found that its resistance to bacterial black spots is better than its parent lemon Meringue and sibling Lemon Zest.
    We top-worked a tree into Orange Sherbert in 2017 and added more in 2018 and 2019.
    Flavor: Citrus - Burmese
    Country: Florida-USA

    This is great news ! As I JUST picked one up today ! 1) might have been their top mango of '22 last yr 2) might b Dr. Richard Campbell's favorite 3) vigorous--but far less than Lemon Zest & it's parent, Lemon Meringue 4) very low disease occurance ! Lw for Anthracnose, bacterial black spot, powdery mildew.

    Orange Sherbet is at the top of my list along with Dot. It is a mango that many will not believe is actually a mango if you tasted it cubed in a bowl without seeing the mango itself.

    I'm a big fan of Lemon Meringue, but a friend has a tree, and my next-door neighbor, too. So I planted Orange Sherbet since it's considered more disease-resistant and more compact than its sibling Lemon Zest, which has been called the GOAT. Southern Californians, especially you who live in hot inland areas or the low desert, you gotta grow Lemon Zest!

    • @TropicalAcresFarms
      @TropicalAcresFarms Před rokem +2

      *and control powdery mildew. Powdery mildew is the bane of Lemon Zest in California. But it’s easy to control and Lemon Zest otherwise seems to do very well there.

    My favorite mango and have the tree but still only 7 ft for it is only 2 years in ground. Moderately vigorous and a very clean tree. Ranks up there for me with Dot and to me, beats out Lemon Zest, which I just lost to hurricane Ian. My all star lineup is now Dot, Orange Sherbet, Cecilove, and Little Gem to extend the season. 4 mangoes is enough unless you want to be selling a ton of mango. Would be smart for people to space them out 25-30 ft for airflow. Lemon Zest and PPK are monsters!! those trees are too much for most yards and keep them away from the house if you do have them. At least 25 ft from the roof line should be the goal. I know from experience what happens in a hurricane with those monsters. 2 houses severely damages from 2 Lemon Zests alone. One 30 k pool cage and another house lost part of the shingles from Lemon Zest 2 houses away from mine. The farther away from the home, the better!
