But with a hike in the annual fee starting early next year and the removal of some of its existing benefits, is it now just a waste of money?

This was a fair & balanced review of the Amed Bus Gold. I have two, so I can leverage the 4x categories. However, at the new price-point, I am certain to only keep one. I think they needed to enhance the number of spend categories to three, because the Walmart + bene is nothing to write home about. The gen travel credit could have made it more valuable, but it is "US only", in traditional Amex fashion. I will cancel my 2nd card too if the two categories I pick don't yield significant returns. I own a small business and a full-time job as my main source of income. Is it good to apply for AMEX Business Gold for my business and pair it with my current Amex Cobalt? I only travel 1-2 a year so I don’t think applying for Amex Platinum is practical.

If it provides you with enough positive value after paying for the annual fee then it is worth it.
It can also help keep all of your expenses separate which helps when it comes to filing your taxes.
