The Old Grey Whistle Test (sometimes abbreviated to Whistle Test or OGWT) is a British television music show. The show was devised by BBC producer Rowan Ayers, commissioned by David Attenborough and aired on BBC2 from 1971 to 1988. It took over the BBC2 late-night slot from Disco 2, which ran between September 1970 and July 1971, while continuing to feature non-chart music. The original producer, involved in an executive capacity throughout the show's entire history, was Michael Appleton.
According to presenter Bob Harris, the programme derived its name from a Tin Pan Alley phrase from years before. When they got the first pressing of a record they would play it to people they called the old greys - doormen in grey suits. Any song the doormen could remember and whistle, having heard it just once or twice, had passed the old grey whistle test. - Wikki

Just what the music world needs today. Real, uncut, straight rock and roll!
Dam I love this band. They sound absolutely incredible live! The good ole days when music was real, bands had talent and shows were magical! Give me back my rock please! 💜💜🎵🎵💜💜
FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK, I SALUTE YOU!
You need to listen to Clutch my friend.
Oh yes , l totally agree 👍. I miss those days fiercely! KEEP ON ROCKIN MY FRIEND!!! ( the best that u can) !
Too late. You will have Taylor Swift or nothing.
You said it right
Billy not only nailed the guitar solo but improved it over the album version. What a fantastic live performance. No gimmicks just straight rock and roll
Agreed, you can see his satisfied smile when he nailed it! 🙂
Best line up of the band.
You've got to be kidding. Les Warner a better drummer than Nigel Preston? Do yourself a favour.
@@ElectricLabel LOL just what I was thinking. Les was okay for the more basic rock stuff, I guess.
@@ElectricLabel Les slapped in Electric but Mickey Curry and Michael Lee are the best drummers The Cult ever had
Best live version of this song ever captured on video. Perfect. 10/10
My band! This is THE CULT!!!
Seriously. Few bands are as cool as the Cult. Also, best name ever.
Really upbeat rhythm. The bass pumps in this version. Love it 🙌🔥🎸🎤
Loving the pronounced bassline!
Just noticed, bassist is beautiful, too
Rock n' Roll at its finest
It's a shame The Cult is still underrated. I remember talking about them and some people didn't give a sh*t or they just knew "She sells Sanctuary". How come?
I was there when they were the Southern Death Cult watching them in Manchester, saw them in Leeds and also come on stage and duet with the Mission.
No Brasil então você difícilmente acha quem conheça além do superficial. Esse canal é ouro para os saldosistas dos 80's..
@@jeancastro112 pois é, uma dificuldade para achar os álbuns. Mesmo na época, só o Love e o Sonic temple.eram mais fáceis de achar.
Too good 👍🙏
I think they are getting noticed now
Baby baby baby I fell from the sky ...
I heard them at a record store demoing that Album with Wildflower and I purchased it and played it non stop 2 days
love this great band
Love The Cult!
Great band. Seen them live 3 times. Never disappointed
3x as well, really like them
One of my favorite songs of The Cult
They made some great albums and were absolute rock stars. I've seen them four times.
This song is so kick ass , and love the up tempo ending, fkn brilliant
That's Rock N Roll kiddies.
Baby, Baby,Baby! I fell from the sky!
Underrated band. A sound all their own...🔥
Prime Cult right here. Amazing.
I remember dancing to this in the Amphitheatre at The Brunel Rooms in Swindon. Must have been 1986 or 1987. We were called 'Alternatives' back then and the crowd that followed the top 40, bands like Wham etc were called 'Casuals'. Happy days! 😊
I have never seen this performance, they were absolutely on point, amazing, fully rehearsed for the Electric tour ❤
"Billy" a frickin great guitar 🎸 player ☮️
Ian Rules!!!!!!!!! 🤘😤
Dayummm❤ how can people not listen to this😍
Jamie's bass and Les' drums killed it. Such a great album
The mixing is just right. 👍
Yes! I love this album! The Cult saved Rock with this track! Electric is pure Rock 'n' Roll! Long Live The Cult! ❤❤
Love this lineup. Yes, James' bass playing was great and complemented Billy's guitar. The drums were a powerhouse by Les. Ian, a brilliant front man with vocals and movement.
Jaime Stewart , what a badass bass player !
They are absolutely on point here, especially Ian's vocals.
Sounds as good as the record.
How I miss those days when the charts had a variety of genres including kickass Rock like this.
Sadly the charts seemed to go on a downward spiral around the early-mid 00's.
Don't get me wrong, I am well aware there are still talented bands making good music but sadly, it doesn't have a cat in hells chance of making the charts which now consists of auto-tuned, samey-sounding, boring drivel aimed at the social media-obsessed, Gen Z snowflakes.
Glad I grew up in the 70s and 80s.
about as good as it gets!
Agree with you. The garbage that dominates today. I grew up in the 60s 70s 80s. I was mid twenties when The Cult broke through with She Sells Sanctuary. That song still sounds fresh and hasn't dated to me.
Thanks for uploading this
Our pleasure!
Love and Electric are 2 of the best guitar albums ever. Not particularly technical or amazing but so so pleasing to the soul
What an amazing band. I particularly like this lineup. Lots of swagger. These guys always get the job done.
When I listen to the cult so does my neighbors.
Ha, love it! 🤘👊
Certified fire. I first heard the band at a small club in the late 80s. Been a fan ever since.
Cult Forever Forever Cult!
Saw them in the late eighties. Funny thing, Guns n Roses opened for them back before they became big.
I saw that gig too
GNR opened up for them in Houston in 1987. Most people didn't know who they were and Guns and Roses had a bad night. I though they were the worst band I had ever seen. Six months later they were number 1 in the world. Who knew?
Remarkable band. Forever in hall of Rockers..GOD bless 🙌.......
This absolutely kicks arse
If I were trapped on a deserted island and could only have ONE song, this is my song!! My rock band Room 13 would play this at the bars (and we looked the part) and people wouldn't know it. 😳 Always someone would come up and say like, " Dude you guys Rock! What was that talking bout love song"? 😅 The backin vocals, the breaks in between chords with only my drums.... SH%T YEAH!!
Thanks so much for uploading this to HD!
Just plain wicked!
Great group
Wowww!! Jaja.. GRACIAS POR EXISTER.. 💯✨🤩😍🌟😘🙏🎵🎼🎶🎸🎙️🥁🎸🇪🇦🇪🇦🇪🇦❤️❤️❤️
This is so good as a real live performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test, because not all other performers stuck to the rules.
Marc
Great guitarist!
Pretty sure this was the same year they came to my town. Their OPENING act was Guns N’ Roses. I had just turned 16 and wanted to go so bad. Unfortunately: parents.
Absolutely kicks ass
actually sounds better than the studio version ☝🏻
Not difficult. Electric was a massive let down.
There is another album version, called Peace.
I saw them in San Diego in the 80s, and they were Awesome!
O melhor porra que época foda!!!
Holy shit that kicked ass
got me excited in college. couldnt get enough, they needed more
Totally off the chain bad assssss
Best band ever
Thank you! Muito obrigado 🇧🇷
Love love 💗
Duca ! Essa é a banda!!🤟
Meravigliosi!
The Epic years 85🎸🎼🎸 yeah
My favorite track from Electric! Great performance.
Incredible
Isso sim que é música!!!
Younger generation confused , no lip synching or auto tune needed in those days.
They don't know the real, but let's introduce them. Remember when you were young and dumb???
Wow, fantastic live version, thanks for the upload and the teen memories!
Instantly transported back to college.
Nailed it!
Put this on blast and tear it off the frame.
Please pay attention!
Damn, tight for live, not far off from the recording.
Loving your Cult videos!! Thanks again, The Archive!! S2
Glad you like them!
Excellent !!!!!!!!
The bass line is a monster.
Never seen this one. Wish I saw them right at this time in history. Ians voice is great.
Fucking awesomesauce right there folks!
Not nearly enough love and respect given to, Cult, Electric, as an all-time rock album.
AWESOME
Ottima esecuzione, più veloce !
Weird. 119 views, and 186 likes. I've never seen such good rating!
Great Band - Brilliant Song 🎵
Top top too
Baby baby baby… ❤😅
❤️💯👌🥂
Three different collage campuses all together partying to this, oh yes, and no cops until after 11,
with 8 kegs, 20 guys with the full heavy metal Rocker look, every weekend, Oh yes, until these bands came
to town, Oh yes !!!
They need to tour the central part of the US more they’re doing everything on the west coast
This was when they changed from a great Goth band into their Led Zeppelin wanna be stadium rock / metal band.
AKA "Rectal Rock".
Love and Electric are equal masterpieces for me.
🤘🏻😎
🕺🏻💃🏻
🎵 🎶 🎵 🎶🎵 🎶 🎶
🎤 🎸 🥁
👍
God wrote that delayed/comeback guitar riff that comes right before the return to the chorus.
I like the feathers in Ian Astbury’s hair.
Yep - this is a something else rock performance
If you ever wondered what Jim Morrison would have sounded like fronting a metal/ hard rock/alternative band.
Great analogy!
They need a rhythm guitarist to fill out the sound and then crank it to 11.
I MUCH PREFER this version over the studio version!
✌️♥️🎶☯️🖖😎
Billy Duffy 🤘😎🤘
