The fact that the son just did that by accident and the glitch even deleted data off of his hard drive somehow is almost impressive, and makes me imagine he'd be better at programming computer viruses than games

    Hello. I’m a bit of an animator and have looked through the history for old movies like space jam. The reason the animation in space jam was so much better than new legacy was because it was made by pretty much veteran animators while new legacy was pretty much made by people coming out of college where they teach you how to make 2d puppets rather than hand drawn animation.

      @@bogmanhimself4656 There are some, but I find it hard to believe that the scores of veteran animators in the US (and later Japan) wouldn't be the best traditional cel-animators out there. And the very same ones who are aging out of the industry. Digital and cg-assisted animation is pretty depressing looking to me. But I'll check out the companies you mentioned.
      Like in 20 years, do you think we'll have as many great car mechanics as we had before EV's? Definitely not, there are tons of examples of lost arts.

    • @c-puff
      @c-puff Před 3 lety +71

      We still exist and there’s a good number of us. Maybe not original Space Jam level but you’d be shocked what animators put their stuff on youtube FOR FREE. Chances are as said above; WB just wanted to exploit non-union kids coming right out of college because they’re easier to force into crunch times and poor pay.
      However, the biggest problem it looks to me is not just the animation, but whoever the animation director in charge was is absolutely TERRIBLE at shot composition and storyboarding. Which has a lot to do with why it looks like shit.

It would have been so easy to include him in the Matrix scene to explain where he has been after Bugs was left alone on the Looney Tunes planet, especially considering Granny normally kept Tweety in a cage as a pet in old cartoons anyway and it would make sense if they went somewhere together

      YEP! That'll do it. My country has a bunch of positions that people in my country literally cannot do without falling behind on their bills and becoming homeless or living in assisted living facilities. Low skill workers in a single household income are expected to work 90 (NINETY) hours a week to be able to live on their own. So instead of pushing policies to increase the wages or help depress the cost of living, the government imports temporary foreign workers from countries where they're used to being treated like slaves and living with 87 roommates. Also, guess which group is ineligible to sign up for unions? That's right, thus enabling employers to treat them like shit on top of not paying them enough, which stagnates wages.

    As a woman it's really annoying that that's the route they went with Lola, it's purely performative activism. Like, some of us do look like that, what would be not-sexualizing Lola would be how you have other characters interact with her, the camera shots you choose to make, the music that plays when she's on screen, not altering her appearance, like what the fuck. It's the same shit they did with Miss Bellum on the rebooted Powerpuff Girls. Don't erase the character, just have them be respected and not oogled over. Like removing them is almost as to say women can't be respected unless they look a certain way, which is running in the opposite direction of something they're pretending to care about.

    5:13 Plus, that that Pulp Fiction reference was both A) funny and B ) situationally appropriate. It took place right after the Toons had used the 'Secret Stuff' and were actually holding their own in the game, and it wasn't just two random characters that were used. Yosemite Sam and Elmer Fudd have _always_ had guns as part of their routines, and you didn't get much cooler aesthetically in the mid-to-late 90s than Pulp Fiction. If it were just for 'haha, reference!' then they could have used anyone because it wouldn't matter. Instead, they used two characters who were infamous for how generally harmless and impotent they are _despite_ how liberally they use their guns.
    Compare and contrast with the godawful laziness of the Granny/Matrix/Twitter reference. And the worst part of that? In the _ten_ _fecking_ _seconds_ I spent thinking about that combination, I came up with a better joke using those same components! You could have had Granny all Matrix'd out doing offscreen, intense computer stuff, and then the punchline is that it's revealed she's struggling and failing to use Twitter properly. It would be a bait-and-switch gag that's an actual _joke_ instead of just being a reference, and it works to use Granny because part of the joke relies on how old folks struggle with new technology to the point where the act of using Twitter may as well be Matrix-tier techno wizardry.
    I'm not saying it's a _good_ joke, but it's at least _a_ joke, and I came up with it as a passing thought while making this post about why the Pulp Fiction gag worked in the original. It took me, some randy on the internet, mere seconds to _accidentally_ write better jokes than the hacks behind this film.

She was talented, confident and demanded respect WHILE being a good looking chick (Bunny).

    Here's something that bothers me. You guys noticed that in the sequel the actual sport of basketball takes a major backseat?
    In the first movie everything revolved around basketball. Little Mike is practicing his shots. The Looney Toons challenge the aliens to basketball, which was a somewhat smart move. The aliens went to various basketball games to steal the basketball talent from famous basketball players. The Looney Toons, desperate for help, seeks out the greatest basketball player of that time. The soft moment showing the basketball stars struggling makes it clear just how important basketball is to these people. The game, though extremely Looney, was still a basketball game. I know I said basketball a lot but it shows just how important this sport was to the movie.
    In the sequel it's clear that they're focus is on video games and sucking off WB properties. The actual sport barely plays a role in the movie until the game itself. Which isn't really the sport of basketball as the rules are centered more around the video game as oppose to the actual sport.
    For any future writers. Don't make basketball take a back seat to your basketball movie.

    • @dardanik
      @dardanik Před 3 lety +3

      While I admit that challenging the aliens to play basketball was necessary to make the story they wanted to tell work, it was not a "somewhat smart move" at all. They could have challenged them to a track and field race and had them compete against the Roadrunner or Speedy.

    • @RJLiams
      @RJLiams Před 3 lety +17

      @@dardanik Basketball was one of the many sports that they could have chosen which would have given them a huge advantage. They can't run, they can't jump, they can't throw, and they don't seem all that coordinated with their body. Even after they got bigger they were still limited to the rules. So there was still a chance. Basketball was a great choice even if it's not the only choice they could have used.
      Also track and field is more than just racing. The field is a pretty key component to that sport.

She plays really well off of Bugs and Daffy, and I wish WB would meld some of those aspects into her standard personality going forward. Having the three of them form a comedic trio constantly flipping between being deadpan snarkers and “looney” characters has a lot of potential imo. Also the Looney Tunes Show redesign was better than this movie’s. She’s cute and cartoony there, not sexy at all, but it works because she was designed to fit in with the other characters. Space Jam 2 Lola’s face just makes me cringe.

    I feel like the biggest difference between the two is that while yes, both are corporate cash grabs when you get down to it, the first was a confluence of big pop cultural moments; it wasn't just the height of Michael Jordan's career, but the Looney Tunes themselves were experiencing a huge resurgence in popularity among kids thanks to cable reruns and new series like Taz-mania and Tiny Toons. Kids liked Michael Jordan, kids liked Looney Tunes, let's have Michael Jordan get up to Looney Tunes antics. It was a chocolate and peanut butter kind of cash grab; it was still stupid, but it made some level of sense to do it.
    Meanwhile, this one is purely predicated on irony, memes, and nostalgia-wank. Like, yeah, Lebron James is popular, but the Looney Tunes are nowhere close to their 90s second wind, though not for lack of trying. The Tunes are directly important to the plot of the first film, since it's their freedom on the line. Here, they're just there because they were in the first movie and WB owns them; shit, arguably it'd make more sense to replace them with WB-owned video game characters, considering the plot's more about VR and video games. The only reason this stopped being an idea they kicked around every so often that I can see is because Ready Player One managed to make bank peddling nostalgia-wank and some guy in marketing went "Oh yeah, according to our copyright bots, songs crossed with Space Jam are popular. Let's just do that again."
    I was going to finish with "But it made a bunch of money, so what do I know," but it's been out a month and hasn't made back its budget yet, lol.

    • @pheonixrises11
      @pheonixrises11 Před 3 lety +2

      I kinda liked it because the style thing emphasized that the animators could do whatever they wanted cause it’s not actually a basketball game but a video game. I thought the ideas presented (animation-wise) were pretty interesting and they manage to put in tension through other means, like starting out with the looney tunes loosing hard until they let go of sticking to basketball rules, and having the thing with the algorithm hacking the game.
      maybe it’s not as tense compared to the original, though, I don’t really remember(if you do, it would be cool if you could remind me on how they did it)
      I didn’t like the CGI but imagined it as the algorithm appealing to being more “modern” with CGI’s popularity, and that made me feel better.
      and I liked how the son switches sides so the narrative avoids the son being villainozed by society after the story’s over.
      ~~~
      however, the visual gags didn’t feel very unique a lot of the time, and the story isn’t particularly amazing. but personally, I didn’t find the original spacejam’s story memorable either(I watched it for the first time a year ago). soundtrack was super good, though.
