As a young black man I don't think many others my age and race probably care about horse racing but I love it. I'll never forget the BCC. Shame on any enthusiast who has a single negative thing to say about Pharoah. He won the TC, then backed that up by winning the Haskell, finishing a close second at the Travers, then destroying the field and the track record at the Breeder's Cup. In a sport that has been in a tailspin for decades, AP brought six months' worth of wonderful positive attention. What more could a racing fan ask for?

      It's hard to take anyone over a Triple Crown/Grand Slam winner. For 37 years (including just the year before) it seemed almost impossible that we'd ever see a TC again.
      As far as other horses, we tend to focus on the ones who lost the TC bid at the Belmont. But Afleet Alex also won 2/3 legs and his final stretch performances at the Preakness and Belmont were phenomenal

    • @JayB2
      @JayB2 Před 8 lety +3

      +SkyPantherr too bad they cant just stud him for a few months, let him rest, and then bring him back to racing. Most of the time a horse peaks out at about 4 years old. Im sure he could dominate until he is about 5. But i also heard the insurance would be too much to ever afford. Thats one of the main reason they cant do it.

    • @EQWranglers
      @EQWranglers Před 8 lety +10

      +Jay B The insurance premiums for next year would be more than he could make if he won every race he started in. No matter how successful he is, they're losing money, and you can't argue it would raise his stud fee as he's already at $200,000 per foal for his first crop. He is that very rare breed where essentially no matter how much more he does, he cannot become more valuable, and therefore there is no monetary value in racing him longer. Many people were arguing to retire him after the Belmont, because he's done enough; we are blessed that the Zayats ran him 3 more times and allowed him to cement his legacy. One of the greatest 3YO seasons we have ever seen a horse run.

    I have long enjoyed watching Secretariat's last race (Toronto, October 1973) out here on CZcams and it always makes me tear up a bit. Like American Pharoah, Secretariat won the famed Triple Crown in 1973 and was entered in some key races after his tremendous victory at Belmont. Also like Secretariat, American Pharoah was coming into his last race after having suffered a narrow loss in his previous race. (Hollywood can't write this any better!) I felt in my heart that American Pharoah would follow the way of Secretariat with a very comfortable win in the Breeders' Cup. Who for second then? That was harder for me to figure - there were several wonderful horses in the field. In the end I "wheeled" an exacta (4/all) with $10.00 on each horse (hoping for a long-shot in second, of course). My $70.00 bet paid something close to $400.00 (the exacta times five) which was greatly boosted by the 33-1 (#6 horse) which came in for second. I wish all my bets were this easy. P.S. Much credit should forever go to Mr. Zayat (owner of AP) and Miss Penny Chenery (Secretariat's owner, now 93 and still going strong!) for not retiring their beautiful horses directly after their Triple Crown win at Belmont. That would have been the "easy and sensible" thing to do - instead, these classy owners wanted to better promote the sport they so love by showcasing their champions in selected events which gave many thousands of (current and future) fans a chance to glimpse horse racing history. Forever thanks for wholly giving back in the way you both did!

American Pharoah, in my opinion, is the greatest horse of my lifetime, just as the announcer stated. All I ever wanted growing up was a Triple Crown winner and he gave me that and so much more. Thanks for the memories my boy.

    I am old enough to remember the great Secretariat winning the final jewel in the triple crown by 31 lengths. Then came the amazing Cinderella story of Seattle Slew 4 years later, with the great rivalry between Affirmed and Alydar the very next year.. I was blessed as a kid to see these great thoroughbreds in action, and it guaranteed a lifetime love of thoroughbred horse racing. Like a lot of others my age, I started to think we may never see another triple crown winner before we died. Thank God for the arrival of American Pharoah! I got to witness greatness as an adult one more time! He is truly an amazing animal!

      I agree. I just watching this punctuation mark on a great career. Sure, I would have loved to have seen him in the 2016 Classic with Arrogate and Chrome, but more for the spectacle. I don't need to compare AP with Big Red.

    Just so impressive. The best horses in the world are targeted for the BC Classic and AP just obliterates the field. The discussion can now be had where American Pharoah fits among the great horses of all time. It's probably a tough case to put him over Secretariat or Man O' War, but any other horse? 3rd greatest horse of all time?

    • @reiningmoney
      @reiningmoney Před 8 lety +2

      +reiningmoney I have one way of seeing this. When phenomenal horses run, they make great horses look like donkeys running against them. People say AP got away with easy fractions, nobody went with him early, they gave it away to him....let me tell you, did they not see Tonalist and Frosted making those big middle moves at the far turn to try to take it to AP? Did they not see Ortiz swatting Keen Ice before the last turn to try to stay in contention? Did they not see Honor Code not even make up any ground the last 1/8th as AP was pulling away after setting the pace and still put around 10 lengths on him? These are all good horses, American Pharoah just makes them look like regular horses. Give this horse the credit that is due. Whom has he beaten? Pretty much everything that has shown up!

    • @mycenia
      @mycenia Před 8 lety +3

      +Randy Bailin No. He's the greatest horse in decades and he is wonderful to watch, but I'd say it's a stretch for him to make it in the top 15. There have been many, many amazing horses throughout history, most of them unknown to the general public because they haven't had movies made about them. :) Of course, it's all speculation. Times and wins and losses mean little when generations separate horses of high caliber.

    • @mycenia
      @mycenia Před 8 lety +6

      +reiningmoney Even the great Secretariat lost races in his time. His loss to Onion in the Whitney is still considered one of the greatest upsets of all-time. Every athlete has the potential to have a bad outing, no matter how dominant they are. That said, I agree that AP isn't Secretariat's caliber. But few horses, no matter how great, ever were or will be.
