- Barry is a true Rhodesian, served in the SAS as a National Serviceman and later as a regular. He was involved in most of the major operations of the Rhodesian Bush War and has a very interesting story to tell.

Barry is very complimentary of his fellow compatriots and Rhodesians, which is very refreshing to hear and quite rare these days. When I grew up I remember this lovely way of speaking about others as indicated in my book The Flame Lily Weeps (Pneumasprings Press) and Sons of the Soil (Lulu Press). Ross.
Great to see you again Barry Jolliffe after so many years, and nice to hear your recollections of our selection course in 1974, followed by the para course at New Sarum. On the "Big Bang" op, Rob Warraker was in charge of the dems team, Bagza Stiles was part of the team, as I was, and a couple of others, sorry, can't recall them now, so long ago. I enjoyed your naming of names of many old friends and fellow SAS soldiers (quite a few live here in Australia now), and I look forward to your next recollections, Part 2. The coming together of all you blokes for these talks is incredibly valuable as a historical resource. I am too young to have known about Rhodesia--schools do not teach this forbidden history; almost all of what I have learned is from these videos. It would be a shame if we were to forget the truth behind this country and its unfortunate end, so this is a great job you are all doing, John and Hannes, and all the fellas giving their time to tell the stories. An inspiring story of a great nation and even greater people.

Lots of good stories from this guy, as an ex-Ellis Robins boy myself, the best one has to be that of the fight between a form 2 student and his metal work teacher. lol ! I can just visualize a sea of blue just cheering on this gutsy guy pounding the teacher.
When I was a minister in Paisley in the early 2000s I had two Rhodesian refugees in my congregation. One had been a senior nurse in some sort of police hospital and the man had been a government official in Bulawayo
Both were left virtually penniless due to their pensions being devalued. Rhodesia's fate was such a tragedy for them
My family also knew some of the Elim missionaries who were murdered so horribly

Big bang, yes very hectic country and night walk in was very harsh, avg 36hr awake!, everyone knackered by the time that over!
Great story and well done for sorting out the teacher. I got clapped in the face as a 10 yr old by an Englishman who taught us in Bulawayo. He always carried a cane swagger stick which he liked to use too. Unfortunately I was too much of a wimp to fight back, so credit.
No wonder the usual Rhodesian soldier was very intelligent, they had some excellent schools there. I wonder if Rhodesian could have been saved. Without sanctions yes i think so, but overall imo it was a loosing battle because all the countries opposed to Rhodesia were lying to themselves about the Black insurgents....backed, trained and equipped by the commies. Im glad you guys have kept in touch and are helping eachother many years later. I hope all vets of the bush war can one day find some peace and heal from that war.

I remember Barry from Ellis Robins and Mr. Ferguson. This was a really interesting talk from Barry who was initially an NS soldier. His account of the vehicle attacks into Mozambique by the Squadron is new info for me. I have most of the books about the Rhodesian SAS, cannot recall any accounts of vehicle ops by them over the border. The only incident I recall reading was when Clive C was killed at Hot Springs driving a Unimog in Feb 79. I look forward to the next part of this remarkable soldier's experiences.
Hi Barry, my cousin Des Chalmers Was Heavy weight Boxing champion of Rhodesia, he was unfortunately coach at Milton High boxing club, which I was obliged to join. Got thrashed many times
Great to see you on here Barry. You were a great mentor, center and friend when I came to Chaplin, and helped to ease me into school and rugby there.

Extraordinary and astounding people; both men and women. Now I know why I always kept my eyes and ears to the down-under (Australian) drip-feed news on Rhodesia during the early 1970s into the post 1980 events. When Rhodesia went ZIM ~ So did the country's Gold ~ It's Rhodesian People Exit!
