Xibalba translated as "place of fear" is the name of the underworld in K'iche' Maya mythology, ruled by the Maya death gods and their helpers.
Well,through this album sakis wanted to make us learn and search,I think he did it!
I think that the most of you wondered "What is Xibalba" and a few of you googled it

After year of listening I’m still obsessed
Heard about this band for years. Never checked them out. Seemed too niche. Went to a Marduk concert. Marduk was cancelled. Rotting Christ took over headline duties. Seemed like they played for hours. Amazing to behold. Loved every second. Totally mesmerizing.
I'd heard of them for years but like you, figured they wouldn't be my thing. I couldn't have been more wrong and I wish I got into them sooner. Everything from Thy Mighty Contract to A Dead Poem to this album to The Heretics, their whole discography is magnificent.
@Gareth I listen to Black metal for it's atmosphere, and so far no one is quite as entrancing as Rotting Christ. I haven't listened to their full discography, but I'd even dare to say this album is the most atmospheric one they've made.

I've seen them once too, and I'm glad I did! I too was hesitant on them for a while... until I heard their music. It's so incredibly well crafted I haven't looked back since.

Best RT song. One of the most underrated bands ever. I knew of RT since 1993 when I moved to Greece from Albania. But being too obsessed with Metallica and Maiden, I never gave RT the benefit of the doubt. Probably I was not ready for them. It was my loss. 25 years later I realized what I have been missing. This album is just amazing... After spending my life listening to mainstream metal this band is a breath of fresh air, every song on the album execpt track 5 is just awesome, It should be the soundtrack to the darkest horror film ever!!!!.....The drumming is relentless .
Try Passage to Arcturo, Thy Mighty Contract or Non Serviam, just to name a few from the early 90s, perhaps you have already,if not, I'm sure you'll be hooked up immediately on the early days of RC, these guys have been awesome from their beginnings!!! best Greek metal band ever!

This is a funny comment. I discovered RC with this album and was excited to see they had so many albums under their belt already. Went and listened to all their previous stuff, and nothing sounds like this. So this one and Rituals are actually the only ones I like.

In Aztec Mythology we don't have any hell like Xibalba, Death is just transformation for us. We believe in a Sacred Place call Mictlan (The place where the deads go) but it is a nice and warm place to rest in peace and every person goes there.

In 16th-century Verapaz, the entrance to Xibalba was traditionally held to be a cave in the vicinity of Cobán, Guatemala. The area is still associated with death. Cave systems in nearby Belize have also been referred to as the entrance to Xibalba.
Another physical incarnation of the road to Xibalba as viewed by the K'iche' is the dark rift which is visible in the Milky Way.

yes!! and in the Popol Vuh -a book of mayan myths written after spanish conquest- is the place where the death was transmutated to life for the action of the divine twins that fought against the lords of Xibalba. The symbolism associated with the Xibalba refers to the agricuture because the descent to xibalba was a form of represent mythically the sowing of seeds.
