RX Burn Rocky Mtn Arsenal 3/14/2014

- Prescribed burn of 150 acres at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Denver, CO. Participating agencies: USFWS, USFS, South Metro Fire, West Metro Fire, Denver Fire, Fairmount Fire.
A dust devil formed and drew the prescribed fire into it. It crossed the line and burned about 1 additional acre.
Fun fact: That music wasn't edited in. It's the natural ambiance created when such a tornado is born.

Am I the only one who found this to be really humorous? I think the heavy metal music makes it so. I mean, if it was just dust, and the dust devil retained fire better, I could see it just being serious and cool; but when you have an armada of tumble weeds just lazily floating about in the air to heavy metal? Freaking priceless.

So what have we learned today? Creating a tornado in a forest fire can put out the fire, but bring the fire to new places.
Dear Thomas Rogers, This is an awesome video. Did you live in Michigan thirty years ago? I knew a Thomas Rogers from Colorado who lived in Michigan for two years.
I bet the firefighters are thinking, "I hate it when that happens." But it looks cool. I saw a dust devil go across my property once, and ran to catch up with it and stand in it. Windy, and windy, both! No burning tumbleweeds though.
that's a heck of a thermal. Easy to find, probably lots of great lift, but might damage the hang glider a bit.
