- What if I told you that we possess just the right technologies to take us to Alpha Centauri in less than 50 years?
In an epoch where even going to Mars seems very hard, this statement might sound crazy, but trust me: it won’t anymore after you have watched this video.
In 1958, the Orion Project started. It was guided by nuclear physicists Ted Taylor and Freeman Dyson. Their purpose? Building a nuclear-propelled rocket capable of sending a whole spaceship to Mars in a very short time, and to places like Alpha Centauri in less than a human lifetime.
Unfortunately for space explorers though, the Orion concept is inherently “dirty”, because it uses fission fuel, and it is also very inefficient. A better mission concept would exploit fusion. However, while fission has been mastered and the technology required to build an Orion-type spaceship has existed for over 40 years now, no one has ever yet produced a properly controlled fusion energy.

To travel such an enormous distance, we'd need a far faster spacecraft or some other method for getting there. According to NASA, the Discovery space shuttle (which was retired in 2011) travels at around 17,500 mph (28,000 km/h). Even moving constantly at this speed, it would take over 148,000 years to reach Alpha Centauri. Even when the Orion spacecraft, the crew capsule associated with the Artemis Program, is ready to carry crew NASA says its top speed will be around 20,000 mph. This won't significantly cut down this travel time to Proxima Centauri. That's even if either of these vehicles was designed to journey out of the solar system, rather than just making relatively short trips to the moon or Mars.
The only spacecraft to make it out of the solar system thus far are Voyager 1 and 2, launched back in the 1970's, and NASA estimates that even traveling at speeds of over 35,000 mph (56,000 km/h), it will take Voyagers 1 and 2 nearly 40,000 years to travel 2 light-years to reach the indistinct boundary between our solar system and Proxima Centauri. That means conceivably it would take these spacecraft over 80,000 years to reach the star itself.
Orion's drive was nothing like a space shuttle's. The video correctly states that Orion's speed would have been 5% of light speed (9,300 miles per SECOND). That is "far faster" - though I would agree not fast enough for a practical mission, even with the slight impact of relativity on the vehicle.
I just hope we can send a human to Mars before I die. That would be cool.

It's certainly interesting to think about the possibilities, but realistically we're probably centuries away from actually doing it, if even then given the current state of the world.
Interstellar travel is a fantasy. We may be able to colonize our solar system in a few centuries but traveling to other stars ain’t happening. Ever.

Aren't computers good enough today that NASA can do fairly accurate simulations of an Orion drive without having to actually blow stuff up?
Sure, but you'll never know if the data you get from a simulation is worth anything.
@@ozzymandius666 If you know the power of the nuclear bomb which they would, and the strength of whatever material they're testing for uses as the plate which they would. Then the computer would do everything else and it would be accurate.
They already do this with rocket launches where there are actual people who could be killed and who have been in the past, there's no reason they can't do it with the Orion drive, obviously, they would run the simulation multiple times to verify the results, but like I said they already do this all the time at NASA and SpaceX. You can't do modern space travel if you aren't able to run simulations, it would be too great of a risk, yes they did it in the past but they didn't have any other choice, they do now.
@@barrywhite8747 What about the effect of radiation on the pusher plate? what about the effects of cosmic rays on the hull? What about the ageing of the equipment after 20 years. The answer to the simulation question is "no."
@@ozzymandius666 You act like that stuff isn't known and that computers can't take it into consideration. I believe it's called a long-term simulation, it's similar to what they do when an astroid enters the solar system and they can run simulations to know if there's any chance of Earth being in danger, though I'm probably getting the name wrong. The point is that's the main use of quantum computers, they are the only ones that are capable of doing it which goes to my point that this kind of stuff is already going on. If you don't want to take my word for it then look it up.
Based on our current inability to evolve beyond war as a species, we will destroy ourselves with such technology before we join together to explore with that technology.

It's one thing to go that fast but it's another thing to slow down. You can't just apply a set speed from point a to point b because the amount of breaking needed going that fast would require a long time over a long distance.
Otherwise there won't be much left of us even before we smash in to a planet.

There is no way that we can colonize a hypothetical planet in the Alpha Centauri, or any other star system. We would need to approach light speed but that has a built-in destructive element. It only needs to hit one particle the size of a grain of sand to completely destroy the space ship. Would you want to take that risk
Who would of thought in the 90s that we be doing everything on a screen in the palm of our hands. If they really wanted to pump the money into making it happen, I’m sure they would. If not manned flight at least by AI.

There's also a nuclear water rocket. Uranium salt water is injected into chamber where the flow rate is carefully adjusted to bring the uranium to critical mass. This flash boils the water...

When we have a fusion reactor on the moon, then I'll believe we might go somewhere and it is far more logical to make the first few trips inside out own solar system, plenty to explore right here...Ganymede, Europa, Titan etc.
As always most problems can usually worked out , the two main problems as i see it usually comes back to motivation and money .
I suspect we might be better off learning how to build stuff in space , if we do then build a very space craft like a star wars battle cruiser except without all the movie BS ....warp drive , etc , ..... and except without the battle part :) if it could be constructed , and if we make a huge space craft with multiple forms of propulsion so we do not have to rely only one type of engine and fuel , and also with room for hundreds of skilled people and even labourers to live and work , and a part of the craft dedicated to the withdrawing of resources from space , be it moons or asteroids , etc , and being able to process said resources for food , fuels , oxygen , metal fabrication , plastics , etc , etc .
If we could do that , then going fast really would not matter .
Just imagine if you had crews able to do this in space , then they could be building more stuff in space while travelling , and as more craft are built , we have sort of a perpetual motion of building stuff and living in space , visiting other far away places could come later .

Is it fair to ask 20 somethings to get in a can that they may never leave, even a forty year old will likely have passed by the time they arrived at what is hopefully a planet with a atmosphere fifty years after departure.

Even if we found a habitable planet within 100 light-years (I doubt there is a habitable planet in the Alpha Centauri system or anywhere close) of our solar system and we somehow managed to propel a spacecraft to 100 million miles per hour (speed of light is 670 million miles per hour) it would take us nearly 700 years to get there, or about the same amount of time the Roman Empire was around. Seriously folks. We all better learn to get along.

The best spacecraft we've ever built didn't last 50 years, and it isn't even moving at 100 mps, much less 10 000.
The cure to every decease and virus is within our seas, but we're too busy trying figure out how to get to other planets, to even discover them!! There's an alien world here on our own planet that is completely ignored.
Our species will have to get closer to mastery within the solar system first. Then the next step of exploration beyond the oort cloud can be considered. You can't just take off to the nearest solar system haphazardly because you want to fulfill your grandiose fantasies.
I know everyone loves to hypothesize about futuristic technologies, and how we can overcome countless obstacles to achieve a goal. If however, you take five minutes and think logically and ask yourself the simple question , why ?,you’ll realize this is nothing more than comic book level science fiction.

We would need to develop food, air, toilet recycling, etc. We must have a radiation blocking ability, ways of keeping blood flow in the body normal enough. Ability to keep infants alive, toddlers tightly controlled, teenagers from reproducing at random. Grow up for generations being taught and enforced that freedom is wrong, no matter what that lack of freedom does to one's personality or others around them. And educated to specific and in general all systems of the ship. In short live like in a federal jail building. Ww need to have an alternate planet to live on since we so often the reverse of what's appropriate for ourselves and the planer combined. And save this planet at the same time from our constant over use, over population and stupidity polluting it.

Is it feasible to colonize an exoplanet in a far away star system with our current level of technology -- that can't even get humans to Mars -- when we don't fully know the conditions of the planet and haven't even colonized our own moon? Really? You guys need to stop putting out daily videos and go back to how you used to be. Your videos were spectacular and definitely worth waiting 2 or 3 weeks for, and they were far more interesting. Unfortunately, "quality over quantity" isn't a practice with this channel anymore.

It's possible, but that doesn't mean feasible. With today's technology, it's also possible to reverse the effects of climate change, but there's absolutely no political will to do it (probably because of the extreme costs to the rich!), so therefore, it is not feasible even though it is possible.

Personally I think we will never be about to achieve interplanetary trave. Certainly not until we discover or invent a propulsion system so advanced we have NO concept at the moment of it's nature. All the ways of driving a space craft we can imagine like Warp drive, or worm holes in space, and the like are all simply figments of someone's over active imagination, THEY DON'T exist. As this interesting video pointed out the time which it takes to reach even the closest of star system is just mind blowing. If it was possible to reach Alpha Centauri in lets say 100 years, which we do not have the technology to do. It would mean at least 4 generations of humans 3 generations of which that would have never seen their home planet. I doubt if they would be as excited as the first generation when they find out they will never see or smell or taste the beautiful Earth. Just as a matter of interest I have read that going to Alpha Centauri using todays chemical rockets, clearly impossible would take. 17,000 years, the closest star. 68,000 generations of humans. Gee by the time they got there they would have forgotten why they came, or where they came from.

sending people in the first ship is not going to happen. The first ship will contain various mosses, lichens and algae adapted to diverse conditions. The automated ships will identify and target the best sites in the Centauri system to establish a biosphere.
