I’m 60 years old. My heart was shattered and broken in pieces by my first love at 19 years old who left me high and dry. I thought of ending it back in 1979. I didn’t. I would have missed SO much. A great life. My husband. 3 wonderful grown sons and my first grandchild, a baby girl, due in June. No one is worth ending your life over.
Sad story

Lessons for young people: no one you break up with or who breaks up with you is worth your life, face, sight, etc. say goodbye, wish them well and continue on with your full life.
A lesson for everyone: keep your guns separately from ammunition.
Thank you!♥️
One would think this perfectly logical life lesson is the most simplistic and realistic way to live life, especially since it's been told countlessly throughout the years.
The original writer of this life lesson failed miserably to view life through the eyes of depression.
Until depression is experienced, there are no words to prevent the accompanied tragedies . . . not one.
It's not the breakup that causes suicide. It's ongoing depression that is pushed over the edge. It's more dangerous in teens as hormones wreak havok in the brain.

I am 70 years old. My first "love" dumped me at 20 years old because of our different religions. I was crushed. She was Jewish, I was Protestant. Her family didn't approve of that difference and she subsequently was pressured into dumping me. Hit me very hard but I was fortunate enough to be able to rationalize about what had happened and that it wasn't my fault. She found her "Jewish prince" and married him in 1976. He didn't love her, he cheated on her multiple times through the years, something I wouldn't have ever done. They divorced at some point. Sad.

I never want my daughter to feel that ANY relationship, or any other issue in life, is worth committing suicide. She also had step-sister that successfully committed suicide at 17 (my daughter was 10 at the time, so it was in 2018) by gun-shot--her dad's gun. It was horrific. I can't imagine whether it's better to survive something like that or not--but YOU have shown such bravery in sharing your story and I can't thank you enough
A couple years ago, I responded to a call for a person hit by a vehicle. I was the first to arrive on scene, where I found a young girl (19) who had walked out in front of a moving car. She was lying face down, bleeding out of her eye sockets, nose, and mouth. Long story short, her boyfriend had just broken up with her, and she couldn’t take it.
She was a block away from her parents house, her parents heard our sirens but had no idea it was for their child. I basically held her and maintained what was left of her c-spine until EMS arrived, trying to comfort her as she bled out. She never came back from it. Please don’t do this to yourselves ❤

Nowadays we are so used to judging people faces, whether they are pretty, whether they are perfect...until we actually forgot the functions of a face. With a face, we can see, we can breathe, smile, eat, hear... but when Katie lost her face she can barely even talk. If you have a functional body, it is perfect enough. But most importantly, love yourself for who you are, and what anybody else say will be nothing to you. ❤

Why is no one talking about the real reason this happened? Having a gun lying around and an upset teenager with probably poor impulse control is just waiting for disaster to happen. I'm not saying it's the parents fault but the culture around the normalization of guns definitely played a part here. If she didn't have access to a gun, I'm fairly certain the moment of suicidal thoughts would have just passed by. But if there's a gun in reach at your lowest moment then it just takes one single impulsive step.
Exactly the parents should have been charged

What would you do if she would be ur child????
I have listened to Katie's story many times. Today, in July 2021, I have noticed for the first time that from early childhood she had herself under extreme pressure. In this report her mother says, of her daughter's high school experience, "She had to have that 4.0. " This represents perfectionism. And too much self inflicted pressure. In my opinion, this level of perfectionism in the approach of an elementary or high school student, should be taken as a strong warning. I understand that Katie's parents are doing their absolute best now. It is obvious that they have always cared about their daughter. I just believe that there could be a connection between perfectionistic, high pressure behavior, and suicide attempts. There is this "if it is not good enough I'll just end it" attitude which can be really dangerous. Obviously her parents are great...they are wonderful. I would just ask the parents and family members of over-achieving, perfectionistic students, to guide their child in the direction of easing up on themselves. 3.9 grade average might be good enough. A few losses on the soccer field...acceptable. Just like yourself and accept yourself, as you are.
Agree, she was on course for some real pain. With no coping skills
Having a gun around doesn't seem to have done her any favors either. I wonder how many life-threatening situations her parents actually experienced that legitimize having that easy-out laying around?
As an extreme perfectionist, I totally agree. I’m very hard on myself and I’ve had many suicidal ideations too. I’ve learnt to let loose.
Agree. Got into severe depression the moment i started struggling for the first time. Still have to deal with it.

I feel even worse for the brother who had to see it first. But yeah.
As a mother, I can honestly say I would have been sick over it. I wonder how she is doing today?
You're never the same after seeing something like that. My sis used a hand gun, not a shot gun, so it was a lot less horrifying... but the awful thing about a suicide by gun is that it happens SO FAST... you have no time to process what you're seeing. Literally just 'boom'... and she's gone.

When I was in high school, my high school sweetheart & I broke up in our junior year. I was devastated and cried for half a year and took years to actually get over it. It shadowed a lot of my young years. After the break up, I had to endure seeing him with the other girl on a daily basis as we went to the same school. He ended up taking her to the prom I’d already purchased the dress for, as we broke up the month before prom. People who knew me asked my Mom what was wrong as I’d changed from a happy, always smiling, confident girl, to a shadow of myself. I hid in our closet to cry constantly. I never thought of taking my own life, but if God had said that I’d be dying soon, I wouldn’t have flinched. I went thru the rest of my high school years acting as if I was fine, hiding behind being a varsity song leader, an active social life, and other boys(I always had dates) whom I resented because they weren’t the boy I loved. I was really a very sad girl. My poor Mom, I never stopped to notice that my pain was hers; I was too absorbed in my own woes. Only now, as a mother, do I realize that you can’t always fix what hurts your child, and that is very painful. Anyway, I’m now 74, have lived a wonderful life mostly with the love of my life, my husband. If I could tell my 16 & 17 yr old self anything, it would be to stop wasting so much time crying, enjoy the people that love you, and the boys that want to be around you. I wasted so many days. In retrospect, it was all but a drop in the bucket of my life!

it’s hard at that age to be able to rationalize… your love feelings are so so strong you truly believe you can’t live without them. I was like it over boyfriends when I was younger but completely grew out of it.
Everyone saying it’s stupid to take your life over a breakup is missing their own point. People usually do NOT think life is over after a breakup, and for that to be her breaking point it’s clear that there were other things going on with her mentally. People who are not either depressed, emotionally unstable or otherwise emotionally distraught would not choose that option. Don’t think she gave up her life over something so simple
KAYLA DELVECHIO Most teenagers who think they're madly in love think it's the end of the world sometimes when they have a break-up. I remember my son being very upset and I'd tell him. Trust me, in a little while this won't be a blip on your radar. He trusted in my experience. I'm sure she was very young and immature. Maybe felt she had no one to turn to or her parents wouldn't understand. It's a horrific way to learn life lessons. That break-ups happen to everyone and are not the end of the world.
gojobuddy I’m not trying to say a breakup isn’t entirely heartbreaking and a terrible experience. But for someone to put their entire life’s value into one person is not healthy and might indicate that other things may be going on, or rather, may be missing in a persons life.
Rata 4U Unfortunately, I have had similar experiences, but I’ve come to realize that that kind of love is closer to obsession. While pain is pain, if a doctor can name some of what is fueling the intensity of that pain it would be a good thing. It’s not a crazy decision but it’s not a decision a mentally and emotionally stable person would make.
KAYLA DELVECHIO
She was being an idiot for that.
KAYLA DELVECHIO I read in another report she had a surgery to remove a part of her brain because of high-pressure in it .... She doesn't have all her consciousness anymore and that....they don't speak about it.

Someday, I’d love to hear her giving a TED Talk when her speech & condition gets improved. She’s a beautiful soul and so strong. Her story is really really extreme and inspirational. Hope she gets well soon.
I agree, and if she has physical therapy that works well she might be back to 80-90% of what she was
@@kodguerrero That's impossible, more like 20%, speech therapy can't fix structural issues. Speech therapy can only help you attain the best you can be with what you already got. She suffered major permanent damage to her mouth.
If you take a look at her CT scan you'll see both her lower and upper jaws were almost completely destroyed, including her tongue. You can rebuild the jaws to some extent, but you cannot rebuild the tongue, and the tongue is an essential mechanism for us humans to make words out of sounds.
@@floatingchimney Oh, I was more thinking about the rest of the body aside from the face.... Her body is atrophied from being in bed so long plus nerve damage from having a bullet pass near the brain/spine. It'm not sure how much is her body and how much is her mind
That may actually happen! She wants to be a counselor or public speaker to help other people.
@Jose Carreras So very true.
“For you created my inmost being;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
your works are wonderful,
I know that full well.
My frame was not hidden from you
when I was made in the secret place,
when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed body;
all the days ordained for me were written in your book
before one of them came to be.
How precious to me are your thoughts, a God!” Psalm 139:13-17
What a beautiful outcome to such a tragic day. What a precious gift from the donor and her family.
This is an incredible hospital that can do incredible things. I know, my life was saved in 1993 at this facility. God bless Katie and the Drs. and staff at CC..
One mistake can change life for ever.
Agree completely. When I was 9 I passed every water fountain thinking I need a drink but I was young and trying to stay with my friends less than an hr later I had a life massive stroke🤕. If I would've stopped and drank I'm positive this wouldn't have happened.
It really can. Life from primordial slime is a joke; That is to say that all of this experience of life and everything in it is pointless-honestly I don’t believe in atheist; meaning nobody is truly at their core truly an atheist-99% of the time is because someone is offended at God, and deceive themselves into thinking all they have to do is just believe that he’s not real or that he is some concoction of some fantastical thing that’s cool to think about-it (atheism) really is just a joke with all due respect anyone’s right to think whatever, and when you think about it, it’s psychological suicide at best.
I have to correct myself-41& on dialysis for over 10 years now out of nowhere, and super exhausted feeling like really? But then I see this. Thank God whatever state were in the somebody is definitely going through through, has gone through or did not make it through much worse.
@K O Then of a certainty, fellow human, you’ve never* heard of the very real and one true God of the Bible. Now if you really wanna know about Him, I’m too happy to have dialogue with you- but if you’re already intent on mocking or criticizing that faith , please don’t bother... the vapid angry vitriolic profile is just utterly trite and painfully boring (not to mention, very telling). Otherwise, much live and I’m all to honored to tell someone about the mighty & loving ( yes, loving) God who loves me perfectly night and day and through sand in spite of all things.

There's no sign of successful here.
Truer words have never been spoken
The saddest part about this is that she did this to herself wow.
@@aisha6984 shes not dumb, she probably or most-likely had mental health issue/s.
There are worse reactions to people that have been dumped, there was this one boy in my school who received a letter from his gf saying that he was being dumped, i have no idea what he had been going through in his life but the fact he jumped out a 3 storey building into wet CEMENT told me that he had most likely been going through ALOT. (i was in year7 when i saw him commit suicide) i've had nightmares
@FROY take care bud. I hope you survive to live a better life ❤️
@FROY No.. idk how to say this and I'm not qualified for this but you gotta Live bud ❤️..

ash u obviously don’t know how sick people are and how they feel it isn’t just about that so shut up you stupid kid there are people who truly struggle out their mentally and with there self and have problems with living and dealing with things and yeah it’s bad, but how much do you think she regrets it now, and instead of supporting her being able to live and get help you’d rather just pick apart why she did it? Go f*ck yourself
@FROY lol. I tried to help idk. Take care.
I wonder if anyone ever even asked her if she wanted to do all of this? I feel compassion for this girl.
Heartbreaking 💔 story! I wish Katie & her family wellness! Although Katie is suffering great trauma, the trauma her family has overcome is amazing, & she is very fortunate to have such a supportive family!
I feel really bad for her brother... I hope they all heal from this experience.
My heart broke. I need to count my blessings every minute
I have 2 daughters and I can't stop crying. God bless you Katie your beautiful family, the donor and the heroic team of Angels who saved you. Love you kiddo : )
I'm a guy and I cried. Thank you for being brave, and bless you in all your endeavors.

Would it be as 'heartbreaking' if she had been a homely, fat girl?
She was so beautiful.

My grandmother used to say, the moment you stop being grateful for the good things in your life, and instead focus on the bad things and inflict harm upon yourself (like what Katie did, like drinking, drugs etc), all those good things will be taken away from you. Let this be a lesson for everyone watching this. I can’t imagine what she went through, and is still going through, having been exceptionally beautiful, and how she lost her sight. Sending strength and blessings to Katie and her family ❤️
That is a beautiful message
Wow, you have a wise grandma. You're blessed hon! 👍🏻🙏🏻
There are a lot of things I can say about life. Two are very simple. The first is similar to what your grandmother said.
Allow only positive things into your heart and your soul.
Help enough people get what they want and you will get what you want.
Very true. Gratitude is everything.
i don't know where all you people get it from that she tried to take her life just because of a break up. it was extremely glossed over in the video, maybe because she doesnt wanna share all her reasons with the whole world. we have no idea what was going on in her life and what had happened leading up to her decision. thank god her attempt was just an attempt, and i wish all the best to her. hopefully she will keep rehabilitating and will have a good life.
What a wonderful job from this team!!!! This young lady had a second chance in life!!!
I'd like to see an update on this girl, what's she doing now and how she's getting along.

Over a boy? A young lady who had her whole life ahead of her
I don't know about Katie's circumstances; but sometimes, something as simple as "a boy" can be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
Lianna Simmons she was depressed. When you’re depressed very small problems like heartbreak can destroy you and bring you down.
Oh, honey. It is never "just" something. 🤦🏻♀️
She obviously had underlying mental health issues. It wasn’t just because of a boy.
Medusa Saurus exactly. Most people in the comment section seem to forget about that
Wow. I’m in awe. I have no other words other than to pray for her continued grace and strength.
Amazing team work: Katie, parents, medical teams, councillors . Katie: live your new life and make a CZcams career in telling your story and helping others. Best wishes.
The crazy thing is how gorgeous she was. Absolutely beautiful. Can't imagine the regret she has now :/
Randy .Marsh I think she’s more happy than she’s regretful. She’d be dead and somewhere far worst right now. I hope someone tells her about Jesus Christ
Her ordeal isn't over. They're still going to make revisions to her new face. Given how young she is and the advancements to come in plastic surgery, Katie may one day be a gorgeous older lady.
It's probably a blessing in disguise that she's pretty much blind and can't see it.
Tells her what? Why not tell her about Buddha or Mohammad?
ferociousgumby: I agree, why not tell her all about Zeus and Odin?
The dedication and love of the medical team brings tears to my eyes. Making it happen!
Wow. I’m so sorry she didn’t see another way out. And I’m so happy she has a second chance at life because life truly is precious and beautiful. God bless her and her family, and the wonderful clinicians who helped save her and give her a second chance. 🙏🏾❤️
Am I the only one thinking how emotionally negligent these parents are? And her brother for having an unsecured gun around a minor as well?
I truly feel sorry for her, she pulled the trigger but her surroundings were not one of support, self-value nor validation.
With all she is living now she said « I’m glad to have another chance » she is still positive and she have a beautiful soul.
She’s positive cos she can’t see her new face. She’s under the illusion that it looks nice.
It’s just so hard to look at her, poor baby. Rock solid parents, for sure.
Agreed
Yes, it's heartbreaking to see an innocent girl put through such an ordeal in life. Sometimes God is cruel...
@@vishnus.p.4007 God didn’t do that. It’s the absence of God that did that, no criticizing her or her parents. We know if we were born in heaven, the just as the likes of Satan would, some of us would be bad. God put new life here, in an imperfect world, so that those who merely accept him can have a glorious life in Heaven, and those who don’t accept him simply pass on, gone.
Jesus, the first born, allowed all those terrible things to be done to Him, physical, emotional, pain and mental anguish, to be fair. He’s asking us to endure this world whatever comes, and don’t turn your back on God, just as He would not, even with all that was done to Him. God didn’t interfere on Christs behalf, because it would be cruel to all those he doesn’t choose to step in on. When He does intervene, he must do it “as a thief,” because if He makes a big deal of it, He will cause many more to feel abandoned. Please, if you do not want everlasting life with God, don’t try to take some with you, by doing you best to influence. With all the evil that harms people on earth, try not to lead others to the ultimate evil, eternity without them there with God.

Yes, but all the people outside her family don't see the heart and soul. They only see what's on the outside. What they see is someone with virtually no face which is shocking and upsetting to the average person. I bet you'd want help in her place.
Why would someone do something like this? She had it all. Beauty brains and a loving family.
I guess she was suffering and she wanted to die. Young people do not know that the pain goes away. She didn't have a chance to learn that and she made a terrible mistake. Do u think she had had someone to talk with before she did it?
My phone showed me this because I was reading the national geographic article about her surgery and the doctors. Very sad story but very resilient and powerful young woman.
Teenagers are compulsive. Emotions run high at that age. I really wish that teens could see not only her example but the many others who had that moment, acted on it and then had to go through the unimaginable. Yet are thankful that they survived.
She was beautiful. What a terribly sad story. I am glad that she survived and is able to try to rebuild her life, but damn, what a beautiful face to ruin.
the horrible thing is that she survived to her suicide to live like that
One has to wonder, who would want to live like that! Her poor parents.
@@MarilynLoveYou She insists that she hadn't even planned on killing herself but that just impulsively shot herself in the face. So she makes it sound as if she has trouble controlling her emotional impulses.
Im not glad she was forced to continue living after that. Whoooo would choose that. She wasnt given a choice.

Another reason why guns don't belong in homes.
It all has to come from her strength and resilience. This is what helps others as well. What a strong family x
She was so lucky that everyone surrounded her with love from her parents to the docters. Really heartwarming during the video
Bless her and everyone who helped this girl.
I struggle with suicidal thoughts for 44 years: from age 6-50. Then I was planning to kill myself on my 50th birthday since everything I tried did not help. I found out that it only takes 1 day to listen to the New Testament Bible. Jesus completely healed My Mind Body Soul and Spirit in 1 day with the Truth. For the last 6 years I have never had a negative thought or emotion.
I'm happy that you have found peace after so many years of suffering.🙏
no matter what happened before, these are strong people now
The dad mentioned it was over a break up, but I'm sure there's other factors that contributed to her trying to take her life.
It could have been the stress of school and feeling like she wasn't living up to expectations. It could have been facing the reality of growing up and what that means. It could have been tense friendships, friends going through their own stresses, etc.
A bunch of little things add up and feel like a huge weight. Mental illness is no joke. One little thing, even if it's dropping a pen, can set you off the deep end.
I hope that she was able to heal emotionally too. I commend her for battling physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Teenagers have very strong emotions, too.
This comment is gold.
Very good comment. Take care everyone
What a well put comment from someone who understands it's usually not as simple as a single variable.
In some cases it's like you said; little weights that stack on top until it builds up to a mountain your shoulders. This can be over a period of 50 years or just 5 months. Your average person can shake these weights off so they don't build but for a person struggling with depression- these weights are chained to them and it's much harder to cut a chain.
Sometimes there isn't even a catalyst that causes it and it can just be a complete change in brain chemistry. In these cases it takes up your whole life. You can feel fine one day and -BAM- the next 6 months you're in a depression. No cause, nobody dying, nothing going wrong, no breakups. Just. Bam.
For others in disbelief that depression can exist without causal factors:
Just to show an example of how REAL Depression is: Imbalances of the same three neurotransmitters that cause depression also cause Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, fibromyalgia, schizophrenia, etc. if unbalanced in certain ways.
I recently read that when we cry we don’t cry for what we think we’re crying; but for things before that.
An amazing surgery that can help a grievously injured person regain her life. I would love to see an update so we can see how Katie is doing now, two years after this video was made. I hope she has gained all she wanted from the face transplant.
Me too...
My first year at college I was in the library doing research in the microfilm collection when a storm dropped a couple of F3 tornadoes an hour away and was heading straight for us. Everybody in the library was "evacuated" to basement levels to ride out the danger, and I just roamed among the shelves some X floors underground and spotted a book titled something like "Gunshot Wound Surgery". It intrigued me, and even though it was quite graphic I was AMAZED at what reconstructive surgery could accomplish for such disastrously traumatic destruction. At the time, transplanting a face was still decades in the future. That book kept my attention for the duration of our "evacuation". And, no, I did not decide in that moment to become a plastic surgeon. Can't sew worth a diddley-doo.

I don't know why I'm even watching this. I had just gotten back from visiting my grandson. He was in hospital, 17 years old last month. Absolutely the nicest kid you'ed meet. 6" tall, blond hair, deep blue eye's. His nick name is blue (those eyes). He has all these friends both male and female. Doctors and Nurses were constantly reminding the friends ("No only 3 at a time"). Jim had been in hospital 18 months. The doctors and nurses are right ( Jim needs rest ). Jim seems to take it in his stride. His friends are blessed with unshakable support for their best friend Jim. Last week, he said to me "You know Pop, I love you, all my family and all my friends, helps me to feel . . . . this love" His quiet humility, well I never had time to make a quick move to the corridors, to have a discreet cry. I fell apart right there. He put his hand on my shoulder, aw. . . Pop don't cry, I am happiest I've ever been. The following evening my beautiful grandson past away, inoperable brain tumour. I'm sorry, I'm so angry. . . This girl blew her own face away. . . . . Forgive me, I am very sorry. Kindest regards
I am so sorry Mr. Abriel. Bless you sir.
