I honestly think Cube regretted debuting Clc the way they did and just wanted to give up on them. But they wanted to avoid ruining the company’s image by just disbanding them or leaving them behind. So they wanted to seem like they tried to make them popular without actually spending money and resources to do it. The lack of communication between companies and the artists and fans is one of the biggest reasons groups """"flop"""", why they fall apart. Cube keeps ignoring everything the fans and the girls want, and they took so long to say anything about things they should've talked about, or they completely ignored them. I see this times and times again, and it's heartbreaking. I'm not a fan of CLC, but I've been kinda keeping up with them ever since hobgoblin, and i was SURE they're gonna make it big, and i was kinda excited for them, they finally found their sound... Here's the thing.
    CLC are rather unsuccessful DOMESTICALLY.
1.Due to the mismanagement mistakes that they have dealt with from debut to now, they weren't able to make a stable fanbase in Korea and got overshadowed by so many artists.
2.Cube had so many opportunities to benefit the group.Giving promotions to boost their international fanbase, restocking their albums and have them participate in shows like Queendom.THEY JUST DIDN'T and we all don't know why.
3.If you are asking why they rarely win at music/award shows, they were mostly competing against groups who did DOMESTICALLY better than them or the competition is too tight.People know who CLC is but they prefer cuter concepts so yeah.(Or 50-70% percents of K-pop fans are casual listeners than actual fans.)
Just because your artists has gain more views compared to others, that doesn't mean you're bound to make a one smash hit in the industry in one go.
4.In conclusion,Cube is the problem why CLC are wasted in Korea because they practically gave up on them. They weren't able to have a world tour,an actual lightstick,a full album or even recognition in their own country.
Thus,it leads to why CLC is unsuccessful DOMESTICALLY.

I think when Cube released Hobgoblin and saw success in the West they should’ve capitalized on that. I know Korea is the priority but it’s better to have success internationally than no success at all. For example ATEEZ originally wasn’t popular in Korea. In general, I feel the biggest issue is that Cube never really invested in building the "branding" of the group. I mean, there's a lot of people saying "I´m not a fan, but I like them and I think they're really talented" and it's like... wait... if you like them, why are you not a fan? And I think the reason is Cube never helped to create an IDENTITY, they never nurtured the bond between the group and the fans. I see many people say "I LIKE CLC", but few say "I AM Cheshire". Personally, I started to get interested in kpop this year, because of the quarantine time watching CZcams, so I didn't have any previous preference for a particular group (I didn't even know any groups), and as I explored the genre, CLC became my favorite. Unfortunately it's extremely common for companies to debut a group, expect them to just magically do good and then if they don't they will start promoting them less and less. Which makes zero sense, if you want a group to do better obviously you do it by promoting them more, maybe you try new things (not new concepts, I mean sending them to variety, debuting a subunit or a solo member, having them act and so on). Because you need the group to both get new fans and for the general public to notice them. CLC got none of that. From what I see Cube had no long-term plans for them, they're just doing everything almost as an afterthought. I'm seriously concerned with how detached people who run these companies are from how their decisions affect their idols. I imagine they start multiple projects, then look at the numbers and focus on the money makers and let the rest slowly die out because no-one wants to deal with it? At least that's what happens at my job, where we sell products. And these companies absolutely treat their idols as products (instead of treating them as employees) except these aren't some boxes in a warehouse that can wait there indefinitely, this is real people's lives and careers they're playing with.

Okay buckle up! Let's start at the beginning, Cube tried to do the cute concept with CLC in a year that was flooded with cute on top of that Twice coming out the same year was a big hit to CUBE and the girls. This has NOTHING to do with either, Twice was just a true monster group.
This being said everything after was CUBEs lack of know how to act. The culture in Korea was moving to idols being in the public eye 24/7 and they didn't let CLC do this. And while Sorn noted once the album is out it's up to the girls to get wins, before that release there is A LOT that goes into it. Announcements, teasers, idols on shows and radio hinting, hell even having their nail techs post pictures of the nails on insta helps and yet CUBE did now of this and the girls had no idea this should been done.
All in all CUBE was hoping for an "easy" cash in with a cute group to go with their hip hop group and boys. When it didn't happen they peaced out.
I also want to note, when the video of Sorn talking about her and Elkie's pay being so much less verse the rest of the group I notice CUBE really started moving towards focusing on getting a new girl group out. They didn't like being called out for sure.

  • @Noattentionplz
    @Noattentionplz Před 3 lety +166

It's enough to look at the stuff the girls are doing on their own to see that the reason they're not successful is 100% because they're mismanaged. As artists they got it all - they're talented, hard-working and got a good connection with their fans. The reason why they got the success they do have it's due to the things that rely on the girls themselves. If Cube actually did even the bare minimum the right way, they could have been as big as Mamamoo and (G)-Idle are now. I really feel the Helicopter cb could have been done a lot better, you can just easily tell that Cube gave up on the girls even without reading fans comments and threads. At this point, Cube do as little as they can just so the girls doesn't sue them and I'm SO GLAD Elkie did what she did - they definitely deserve a lot better! I don't blame (G)-Idle for the CLC's mismanagement, I'm just happy they didn't get the same fate and I hope they will continue their work successfully, especially knowing the girls themselves are friends (and let's be honest (G)-Idle ahs problems of their own with the company).

    1. They are the main reason CLC has low album sales, they never restock their albums for fans to buy them.
    2. Never invested on even making merchandises for CLC to boost their income, they underestimate cheshires and CLC too much.
    3. They NEVER try to promote CLC overseas where the girls are evidently more popular. An overseas tour would surely give them loads of money so what's stopping them????
    4. They just dont care at all. They never release official statements regarding clc unless their reputation is involved. Isnt it their job to protect the idols whenever they got caught up in issues?? Because I have never seen CUBE do that to CLC.
    5. They manipulate the girls into thinking that it's their fault they are not "successful". That's a major red flag. It's like a parent blaming their child for being a failure when they are the ones who should support and help them. Why are people still overlooking this issue?????

Granted, Korean fanbases are very important, but it's obvious Cube didn't care about promoting them well in Korea, so they could have focused on gaining more international fans (Loona, Dreamcatcher and Kard are some groups who have made this work pretty well). Instead they sabotaged CLC's career and kept them from getting as popular as they could have been.

Sure they seem like good friends but on stage, they dont seem to be blend all that well. Some look stiff or slightly awkward with fierce concepts and the other half despise the cutesy concepts. Most other artists would get blacklisted for jumping, but companies like SM would literally go to war with all the legal resources at their command to have and keep Soyeon for themselves. So, Cube keeps Soyeon happy, and Soyeon generously uses her influence for the betterment of her entire group. Nobody in CLC can match that kind of "pull".

Remember that the reason a lot of companies send trainees s for them to be discovered and liked talent or not. They the ones that can make the trend. If cube had kept their mouth shut about eunbin while she was at produce 101, who knows what ClC will be today. I’m not saying that talent doesn’t matter, but promotions lead to popularity . Do you think if cube had announced soyeon as the new member there would be a difference no. If it is about talent, they have a power house singer, a choreographer, some one with a cute appeal(eunbin), and a pretty good rapper . Besides not a lot of the girl groups that are on top today have members with artistry like Gidle or clc yet they are still fine .

Just wanted to say something about CLC's artistic contribution. Yeeun always writes her verses , she also took care of thr concept in "helicopter". Yeeun wrote "i like it" and Yujiin and Seungyeon designed the choreography. Same goes for "to the sky" the girls made the dance on their own. It's just that CUBE is trash basically and doesn't want to contribute in the least to promote the girls or at least fix their shitty mistakes. CLC talked about not having the opportunity to express themselves artistically in debut days. Hell , even fan content and lyric videos were copyright striked in debut days.

First off, I agree that 99% of the fault of CLC's position falls on CUBE. There's a DIRECT comparison available with Dreamcatcher, who also started with a cute concept, also redebuted/rebranded into a more mature and challenging concept (during the SAME WEEK in January 2017), and also are much more popular overseas than in Korea - and are now one of the bigger girl groups - completely due to smart and consistent promotion and development. Had CUBE followed the Happyface Entertainment playbook, CLC would be in a lot better position today.
That said, I don't fault CUBE for taking weeks to respond to Elkie's legal letter and statement, nor do I fault what they did say for being brief. This is the world of attorneys and corporate HR management. Elkie certainly tried to work things out in private before her legal letter was made public, before the rest of the world knew anything was up other than her absence from activities in November & December. Once Elkie's attorney filed her claim it was not in CUBE's or Elkie's interest to say more publicly as it could impair any chance for a settlement. Closed-door negotiations went on between the legal teams, an agreement was reached, and CUBE said all it had to say and nothing more. They were never going to address Elkie's charges in public unless the situation went to a full-fledged court trial, and I am sure the settlement includes a non-disclosure agreement that will keep both CUBE and Elkie from talking about the situation. Indeed, asked about the last three months in an interview for the BayPlus+ magazine photo feature she did, Elkie would only say she has no regrets and is looking to the future.
How this played out is textbook corporate/legal procedure for when an employee leaves a company in a dispute. As much as fans might want, we were never going to get explanations or apologies from CUBE.

    What I feel is like:
When CLC debuted the trend that was good for sales was the cute bubbly concept. So they thought that making a cute group was perfectly enough. The problem is that they just put CLC out there and expected them to gain money and popularity just like that. As if just by existing people will throw their money at them.
Second the cute concept was already oversaturated by ggs. Everyone was making cute concepts. After that, trends move to girl crush concepts and once again Cube jumped into that train late.
Like that's part of the companies job.
Not just creating music but knowing what will sale better in the market, they were so disconnected from the public and what sale well at the time.
Once they realized what the market wanted they gave this good saling concepts to newer groups under the label and pushed clc on other directions trying to avoid competence within the company. Like that's dumb.
Gosh I really hate them for being so bad at their jobs, like, you realize people were paid for these things right (?) Like how on earth do you get paid for doing your job wrong????

This video is very good, especially the way you structured it and chose the important parts.
I really agree with the other comment about how it's a chicken-egg problem, and I believe at some points Cube completely messed up (like with the comeback after Crystyle) and then they didn't even try anymore because 'their not bringing in money, it's to late to fix that'. They could also suffer from the same as Got7, that their company completely focuses on the new group since the old one will disband sooner and therefore any investment in them isn't as 'long term' as in the other (although CLC still had plenty of time to be successful).
I don't know whether the group will now continue or all split ways (with Cube probably), I just hope everyone can express themselves and do what they want after all these years.

If I remember correctly, Cube had a lot of internal power struggles amongst the employees/leadership and financial issues (due to Beast, now called Highlight, departing the label) in 2016. I imagine it was part of the reason why CLC and Pentagon wasn’t really well managed at first but then they continued to do wrong with CLC. I don’t think Cube is great with Pentagon either but they’re still doing a better job with them than with CLC.

I full heartedly believe that CLC are trying to get out of their contracts as well. I could be wrong but I just have a gut feeling that they had enough.
Also one thing, GG writing their own songs was not a huge thing until Gidle made it a huge thing (to me) now everyone believes/expects every GG should be self produced which isn’t the case or fair because not every group has that liberality.

In reality, it's the agency's job to provide everything for a group they debuted but in Cube, there is this unasked culture of self-producing, self-writing which I don't understand. Not every group can be self-composed and Cube should know it.
It seems Soyeon, as a leader of her group, knew what awaits them if they were to rely on Cube for songs. In that sense, we can say CLC was a burning example in front of the newly debuted (G)I-DLE to create their own identity through creating their own music. It paid off with Latata and Hann.

It's heartbreaking to see so much talent and potencial being wasted. Since I don't keep up with them I might not understand the full story, but from what I've seen in this video and what I heard from a Cheshire friend, it seems like the issues are a chicken and egg sorta thing: they weren't successful at first, so Cube gave up on them, but then they couldn't become successful cause Cube gave up and wasn't managing them properly. It really intrigues that sometimes the company seems to miss opportunities on purpose. For example: CLC seems to have a pretty decent international fanbase, but Cube doesn't try to capitalize on that, which KARD's and DC's companies did, with a considerable amount of success. And even Yeeun's thing, I watched Good Girl religiously every week, and she was one of the fans favorites, yet, Cube ignored the hype she got from the show. I get so tired thinking about all of this, can't imagine how Cheshires must feel... Anyway, I hope that those girls can get the hell out of that company and find happiness doing music somewhere else or whatever they decide to do after.
