Gaetano Donizetti's L'Elisir d'amore lands at Milan Malpensa Airport thanks to an innovative project promoted by Teatro alla Scala together with Rai, with the support of Regione Lombardia and SEA. The opera is performed in various locations at the airport, from restaurants to check-in and runways, filmed and broadcast by 15 cameras, 2 satellite stations, 20 camera points, 14 operators and a direction bus. The core of the initiative is a key title in the operatic repertoire, "L'Elisir d'amore", also known to the general public for arias such as "Una furtiva lagrima". The performance is entrusted to performers of extraordinary vocal and stage charisma: Vittorio Grigolo (Nemorino), the emerging Eleonora Buratto (Adina), Michele Pertusi (Dulcamara), Mattia Olivieri (Belcore) and Sofia Mechedlishvili (Giannetta) move guided by the direction of Grisha Asagaroff in the spaces of the airport. The travelling public sees live, as in a flash mob, the individual pieces of a mosaic that is then recomposed only on television screens with the musical coordination of one of today's most prestigious conductors, Fabio Luisi. The television direction is by Francesca Nesler. It is therefore not a simple resumption of a performance but an authentic new production created for live television broadcast. The evening will be presented by Annette Gerlach and Neri Marcoré, while during the breaks special content and insights will be broadcast. A show that is part of our history thus takes on a new form involving the public in transit in an airport, a symbolic place of contemporaneity. The television medium thus becomes the link between a tradition that is an integral part of Italian identity and a much larger audience than that which normally frequents opera houses.
