a quickly made video for frankenstein using footage from a live performance of a different track, simply because i thought it was better than photo of an album sleeve
According to NYC local Binky Phillips, The first time he ever saw the dolls play the song live he noticed that David Johansen had tears pouring down his face and was sobbing while he singing. Come to find out later that “Frankenstein” was the nickname given to him by bullies who picked on him growing up.
To me, pretty much all of their songs sounded the same with the exception of this one & Give Her A Great Big Kiss, which sounded better than the original. No idea why they never released it while they were still together...
If ever there was a band that deserved more kudos... This song is god damn bombshell. The way Thunder's guitar erupts gets my adrenaline going every time!
They got didn't get the recognition that they deserved. They got noticed because of their attire, the sound , and the fact that they were spearheading a movement that no-one knew was coming (a total shock to the system) or prepared for. As it is said"Only time will tell").Only a fellow named Don Kirchner had the foresight to have them on his T.V.show (thank you ! ).The New York Dolls...The Legend Continues. .
GIVE THANKS FOR THE PRODUCER TODD RUNDGREN FOR GIVING THEM FOOTING. MY FAVORITE SONG OF ALL ALL TIME., I'M DEAD SERIOUS. SEEN THEM AT DAYTON HARA ARENA I THINK 74. I WISH, I WISH I WISH, WE LIVED 800 YEARS.
I only listen to New York dolls when I miss my ex boyfriend who passed away in his “punk rock band” days. It always haunts you when an ex dies before you can say you’re sorry. I try to brainwash myself it was for the best I dumped him because I’d be dead right along with him. God pulled me away but it’s hard sometimes lol we were the perfect Sid and Nancy
It's hard, being in a codependent relationship has it highs and lows. Me and my partner have been together for 24 years I relapsed aged 22 about a year after we met. I was 16 when I got on the h, it took me two prison sentences to get clean and I stayed clean for two years. Then relapsed when I bumped Into an old friend who was selling. I brought two bags and jumped straight back in head first. 22 odd years later I'm still battling away. You did the right thing for yourself. Don't ever feel guilty. You just miss him that's all. It's sad hope you're well and. Happy these days
I saw these guys doing Personality Crisis on Midnight Special in '73, of which this video is taken from, and my young mind was blown away. Outrageous, aggressive, dangerous. Everything about it made me want more.
To say the NYD were way way before their time is an understatement. They could have come out today and be relevant. We need to really stand up and give them the credit they deserve.
Like a lot of UK kids in the 70's I bought a music paper (Melody Maker, Disc, Sounds, Record Mirror, New Musical Express) every week. The New York Dolls got plenty of coverage but it was difficult/impossible to get to actually hear unless you went to a live show, which was not possible for me aged 15. They were on TV once (The Old Grey Whistle Test) . I did get to see a very annoyed Johnny Thunders at the Lyceum Ballroom in London and bought '.So Alone'. Sadly Johnny was only going to end one way.
The Stooges were at least 3-4 years before the Dolls. I know, because I was seein' them in 1969. about 3 years before the Dolls made their national debut.
@@edfeltch I'm a tad confused. You say you developed your ethics from meetings with Johnny Rotten and John Kennedy? You also say you met the creme de la creme of the 20th century, and it was those two that made the biggest impact on you? Very interesting. What about them if you don't mind me asking? Given some of the other names you've mentioned, you must have met Warhol (or Maclaren), did they not stand out to you? They seem more interesting than a likely teenaged Rotten, imo.
@@jasondankenbring1710 I think it's Edward that's the confused one, I mean how much ethics could you learn from Johnny rotten. Besides how to spit on someone...
So cool that there is two great songs with the same name! Of course I'm talking about the one by the Dolls and also the instrumental by The Edgar Winter Group. (And now that I think about it, the movie is pretty good, too.l
I find the fact that they’re not playing this song ( at least now) doesn’t bother me, I actually find it dreamlike and deep, and the song’s structure makes it a bit spooky. You know, a monster and all. Anyway, this is visual eye candy of the finest order, and of course they’re one of the best rock and roll- not rock- ever on planet earth
Wow great point. Those were great lyrics. It was Mick Jagger's singing but actually making sense, speaking the truth not some made up fantasy fairytale. "Rode a tank held a generals rank when the blitzkrieg raged." Pure fiction on Jaggers part. No, David Johansen was in touch with the emotional ebb and flow of 1970's raw white boy New York City street life. "When everyone goes to your house, they shoot up in your room," that is David Johansen giving us insight! The streets ate up the Dolls and that was their downfall. They tried to live up to the street cred portrayed in the lyrics and failed miserably. What a debut album I as well as countless others wore this album out. I often questioned myself over this. Why did I play it so much? Why did I love this album so? Rick Jones you have solved the puzzle, you have answered my question. The lyrics were killer. The lyrics were the truth they told a story and that story was New York City David Jo was a drag queen, transgender, a LGBTQ poet 10 to 20 before it was fashionable. That is why he had to tone it down with his Buster Poindexter persona. Buster was a more palatable option than some queer dressed up in drag wearing a size 12 women's shoe from Macys. When the PTB saw that album cover the Aids virus became priority #1. Imagine kids throughout the good ol' USA prancing about in oversized womens' shoes and shooting up smack into their veins back in 1973. Following the lyric to the letter as an alternate lifestyle, a new way to live. No even fifty years later shooting smack is even more unacceptable than it was back then even popping an opioid pill is made out to be pure folly in today,s society, no David Johansen told a story in those songs. He was an amped up Bob Dylan no holds barred but the whole package was just to raw for 1973 America. and with all that baggage I guess you can call them proto-punk rockers. Was it a question of to much to soon, or was it three chords played by half assed musicians the generic punk rock formula of mid 1970's Britain that defines who the David Johansen New York Dolls were who am I to say But as Rick Jones has pointed out for me it was those lyrics that made those songs stand out and stand the test of time for me The US was not ready for David Johansen and his shenanigans while the UK was. Jimi Hendrix right country right time. David Johansen wrong country wrong time and fifty years later the Dolls still create quite a buzz. Thanks Rick Jones for pointing me in the right direction!
@@santana9154 This band definitely had something pretty special in several ways and still I have a soft spot in my heart for them and this album... and yea I think Johansens lyrics are some of the best in rock, pop or whatever...he deserves much more respect and accolades
There is another guitar player back in the shadows behind Sylvain Sylvain. Look at 01:19. You can see him between Kane and Sylvain and you see him throughout the video after that.
Gene Simmons said that you have no Sweet you have no Kiss . Well Sweet had their influence . You have no Sweet , you have no Motley Crue, Ratt, or Def Leppard . I say you have no New York Dolls you have no Ramones , no Kiss.

Binkley Phillips and the Planets..
beautiful, sad, dolls story. Another one is they pulled the sofa off the streets to use for the debut album cover in Alphabet City.
Love the whole album but I always return to this one it's so compelling...
Hands down the most unique NY Dolls song. For a street, guttery, 70's glam band, this tune sounds more like an epic song.
To me, pretty much all of their songs sounded the same with the exception of this one & Give Her A Great Big Kiss, which sounded better than the original. No idea why they never released it while they were still together...
I absolutely love this song. So raw & wild. New York dolls 4 ever!!! 💝💝💝

it gets stuck in my head for days
Great band that was so influential and criminally underrated
One of the few songs that could never be loud enough.
These guys didn't get the recognition they deserved.

They got plenty of recognition but no album sales.
They were just Too Much Too soon

It's a different show. This is not the midnight special.
the drums are incredible and hard to keep up with manning the sticks, so fulfilling when you do. Long live The Dolls.
This is an anthem. Stellar. Brilliant. And has aged beautifully.
Super cool mix, Thunders is on fire.
love this song so much!!!
We were all so thin back then!

This is the studio version superimposed onto a live shooting of personality crisis
Right!
Yeah that sucked. Would love it live

I hear Ramones but at a slower speed.
You just reminded me of "friggin in the riggin" by the sex pistols, LOL. Thanks.
"The captains wife was Mabel, to f---k she wasn't able, so the dirty sh---ts felt up her t---ts across the wardroom table!
Only a chosen few were privy to experience a phenomenon like this .all the rest have to play catch up on the sheer brilliance
This is beautiful. Thank you.
I really give these guys credit for wearing heals n singing for hours :)
Feel young again..Listening to Cbgb legends
I happily reminisce on the couple of times I was hanging out with Thunders,he was like a delinquint demigod from an subterranean alien world.
Those memories are the best. Got to talk to a few big names back in the day. I thought I had good stories.....
From John F Kennedy,to Johnny Rotten,I met the crème of the 20th c. Among those two giants, and my incredible mother, I created my ethics.

It's not even the same tune that the video is showing for the tune. Get a fukin' clue and read the post.
