    I'm not a punk, don't need loudness nor care about speed. I love classical music as well as reggae and various other styles. But when i heared this music first in the age of 55 i knew that i had missed something very important in my life. It grabbs me by the backbones and makes me need more of this stuff-

    A great band that originated in New York City, and ended in Los Angeles.
    Today is exactly 20 years, since this concert 8-6-1996 - 8-6-2016.
    The Ramones were the real New York City (before it became the gentrified hipster-cesspool), in the form of music.
    For many Sinatra is the soundtrack to NYC, but for me its the Ramones.

    • @LetsGoMetsGo33
      @LetsGoMetsGo33 Před 7 lety

      great observation. shit, the band has been gone for as long as they existed in the first place (if you start the clock with their first album). life really speeds up as you age... i don't like where this trend is going...
      they were a band that, by 1996, SEEMED to have been around forever. but bands that were by comparison "young" at the time, like RHCP, Pearl Jam, the Big 4 of thrash, never mind the classic rock bands from the 70s that still tour, actually had way longer careers.

      @RichardDickGrayson Před 7 lety +2

      I was still a little kid when they ended the band, but I remember a local commercial in NYC that had the "Rockaway Beach" song in it.
      It was probably the first song that I ever heard from them, along with "Somebody Put Something in My Drink" (while watching Like Father, Like Son).
      I didnt actually know what the band looked like, until an episode of Space Ghost Coast to Coast.
      But I remember that the NYC that I was born into, Time Square was dark (dim lights, looked like something out of Escape From New York), filled with pimps, whores, and porn theaters and shops.
      The Subways were also dark (dim yellow lights), filled with graffiti art (inside and outside subway trains), and the official smell was urine.
      The subway fare was $1.25 (same as a slice of pizza), now fare has become close to a cab ride...
      It was definitely not the over-expensive "Disney World", that its become....
      But sadly many things are also gone, there was an arcade place that I loved as a kid in Time Square that was called "PLAYLAND" and its been gone....
      Manny's Music, FAO Schwarz, and Arnold Hatters, are also all gone...
      DC Comics abandoned New York for LA.
      Ive gone back to places in NYC that are soo different (aesthetically), that I feel like a stranger in my own city.
      So for me the Ramones' music reflects the NYC that I knew as a kid, and not the yuppie/hipster cesspool thats forced-out many of us natives due to gentrification.
      Youre right, all of those bands are a lot older now, than the Ramones were when they retired.
      In my opinion, I think bands should retire after a number of years. Its good to retire at the top of their field, and not become like some bands that are passed their prime (musically and chronologically), and dont know when to quit.
      I think that some of the bands that you mentioned, are guilty of that.

      @LetsGoMetsGo33 Před 7 lety +2

      Dick Grayson I've lived in Brooklyn and Staten Island my whole life. Yeah, I mean CBGB is gone! Dude I had a couple of crazy nights there seeing Joey (post Ramones retirement). How the fuck can they let that happen? St.Mark's Place in the Village was a great place to hang out and have a punk rock night on the town. It's all fucking gone. The club Continental that was there, where I seen the Dwarves, Lunachicks, etc, Joey used to have Christmas shows there, went to replacing rock bands with a fucking DJ. Dunno if it's even still there. Then take the cleanup of Coney Island in Brooklyn. So yeah.
      The way the subways looked is captured on Subterranean Jungle's cover.
      I don't know if you like music like this, but Agnostic Front's video "old New York" complains about all this. The California punk band Pennywise, funny enough, have a video called "homesick" where the complain about the opposite happening to LA, that it went from clean and respectable to gritty.

      “I've lived in Brooklyn and Staten Island my whole life. Yeah, I mean CBGB is gone! Dude I had a couple of crazy nights there seeing Joey (post Ramones retirement). How the fuck can they let that happen?”
      What was that like?
      “St.Mark's Place in the Village was a great place to hang out and have a punk rock night on the town. It's all fucking gone. The club Continental that was there, where I seen the Dwarves, Lunachicks, etc, Joey used to have Christmas shows there, went to replacing rock bands with a fucking DJ. The old St. Mark's can be seen, in the We Want the Airwaves video. Sadly today it seems like a hipster-hub in that area. But I remember that they opened a Gangster Museum a few years back, maybe that gave the place some testosterone to balance out the hipster estrogen.
      Hey did you ever see GG Allin?
      “The way the subways looked is captured on Subterranean Jungle's cover.”
      Yup, I also remember as a kid that there were times when the lights inside the carts, would flicker on and off as the trains ran.
      “I don't know if you like music like this, but Agnostic Front's video "old New York" complains about all this. The California punk band Pennywise, funny enough, have a video called "homesick" where the complain about the opposite happening to LA, that it went from clean and respectable to gritty."
      Ive never been into those bands, but Ill view the Front's video out of curiosity. Growing up I was mostly into Heavy Metal (specifically Thrash/Speed). My favorite Metal band has always been Megadeth (the Business and Rust line ups, are my favorites). I like most of their albums, but their first four albums are Metal masterpieces. I also liked other metal bands, like Ratt, Scorpions, Motorhead, Early Metallica (1981 - 1986), Early Def Leppard, Early Judas Priest, Black Sabbath (Ozzy version), ect.
      Ministry were my favorite industrial metal band, but I got out once Jourgensen started pushing the Crowley stuff. One thing about music that pushes me away, is if a band starts getting Satanic, or too political, then I lose interest.
      For Punk rock (or “street rock” as I like to call it), Ramones are my favorites. Then behind them I like Fear, Agent Orange, Wipers, some Black Flag, Biohazard (they can fall under metal too).
      I also like other Rock genres, but its mostly 1980's music.
      Hey which Ramones line-up do you like best?

They sold only one gold record in US when the band was active, still they played on 3000-6000 crowd venues, usually band must have 2-3 albums which go gold in a row to perform for crowd that big allmost every night.

      NYC was supposed to be the last show (yes...after River Plate. i have a board feed/bootleg from it) but $$$ changes things. This LA show was supposed to be further down the street/sumset strip at a brand new club called Billboard Live next door to the Roxy(site of old Gazzarris, and now 1 O-A--K). They offered Ramones a fortune to end their career there as it would put them on the map and give them instant credibility on the level of Whiskey, Roxy, Troubadour etc at a time when LA club market was super competitive and crowded with venues. The Fire marshall didn't grant the new club permits and they didn't open in time (opened a little later with Tony Bennett) so they moved the show to The Palace the day before. Goldenvoice was the promoter. I was at this show. I'd seen them 15+ times between 1988 - 1996. sill to this day my favorite band. It was a weird show as Billboard Live was half the size of The Palace and they honored those tickets but don't believe they sold anymore after it moved or at the door. with the strikes for the filming platforms the Palace was 1/2 empty. Every latino gangster in the hood and a lot of hollywood weirdos snuck in thru the kitchen just to see what was up. Weird crowd and a poor vibe. Band was tight but they seemed over it. Eddie fucking Vedder singing the last song w/ Joey broke my heart. people were spiting at him from the crowd.

    it shows how amazingly ahead of their time they were that their last show, 20 years after the debut album, still finds them at club/theater level in the USA but if they had stayed together and survived, they would be a huge touring act today, maybe even arena level, based on their current popularity.

      @182.pixels Před 6 lety +6

      Well, it was mainly the US that didn't recognize them as they should have done. In Argentina, in 1996, they sold out a 50.000 people stadium, and before that show, they had played in 10.000-20.000 people venues from 1990 to 1995. Every night sold out. In Argentina, The Ramones are the most respected and loved band of all time. And they are definitely the most influential band of all time with The Beatles. Both bands just simply changed music.

    • @Warrogue1
      @Warrogue1 Před 6 lety +1

      I read recently that they started making a ton of money when their songs started being used on commercials. Some may say that is selling out, but as hard and long as they worked, they deserved to make some money. I hope they enjoyed it before they died.
