  • We live in Toul Tom Poung, Phnom Penh, Cambodia. On Saturday, June 1st I was watching TV and out of the corner of my eye I noticed a flickering orange light. I looked and saw that a neighbouring house was engulfed in flames. This is our reaction on the night, and then the following morning I go out to see the aftermath of the fire.

    G'Day , Was told about the fire last night , very shocking to witness and very confrontational to those who have never seen something like it before , sad people lost their property but glad no one was injured , khmer community will band together ...

    Glad you guys are safe and secure. That was a very scary incident. Sarah had the right idea early on, grab the passports. Now, I have all my important papers, cards and various currencies in a travel pouch, which I can grab in an emergency and run. Be prepared, Ryan. Cheers mate!

    That was on my street! The wind carried the smoke and embers towards our building, we saw it jump to the surrounding buildings and we were pretty quick to get out of their until it was handled. Sososo glad nobody was injured but very unfortunate about the businesses lost.

    It looks like a chemical fire. Water is not the most effective for putting those out. Stay safe!

    What worries me is if Cambodia or Phnom Penh has the fire fighting infrastructure or equipment to fight fires in these new 30+ stories high rises.

      @itchyfeetonthecheap  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I think most high rises have built-in firehouses in the hallways.

    Damn, I saw this the other night and I was afraid it was the market - from my sightline it was right where the fire was.

    People don't have fire insurance like in the West. So sad for the people who lost their homes😢

    Hi, How can we help and drop off parcels to the families affected? What is needed?

    • @itchyfeetonthecheap

      I wish I knew. It's hard to get that information when you don't speak the language. It's also hard to trust someone that you randomly meet on the street.

      Ontario. Lots of Albertans in Phnom Penh. The Canadian International School here uses the Alberta curriculum.

    Sadly, most of the people there do not trust and cary property damage insurance coverage. I'm retired from Travelers Insurance Company as an underwriter for over 30 years and the only one year they lost money was a 911 year. Peace out✌️
