    The switch to OD to was definitely a parent when you did it cleaned up and sounded much nicer and I used to be a splawn dealer so I know these amps very well!

    Thanks for posting! You may want to point out that there's a Drop B+ Switch Option (Lowering the plate voltage to give the Street Rod more sag & feel), a new Mid Scoop Switch and a new Old/New Switch Option that changes the voicing to the earlier 2006 Quickrod. Splawn amps rock (no pun intended)!!!

      I can't wait to try one with those options on it. I wonder if he could do a 3-way switch, to go from 2006 -> 2007 -> current circuits. The 2007-2011 circuit isn't all that well liked especially in A/B tests like the other video I posted, but I really like it for that specific style of lead/solo tone... if I were a better player, I bet it could nail that Eric Johnson or Journey type singing lead tone since the really high frequencies are rolled off more.

      @therudedog4139 Před 3 lety

      @@totallyradguitars959 That would be a Scott Splawn question. However with the noted options and the killer tone from Scott's amp you may not feel the need for a 2007-2011 circuit. And besides, you can always add a parametric eq pedal to roll off the highs getting you where you want to be. As for me, his current design with the added options is as good as it gets!!!

      @@therudedog4139 The first Splawn I ever had was the 2008 one, I actually got a 31-band rack EQ to add back in some "air" to open it up. I suppose it could also be used to smooth out the modern circuit as well. I think a good EQ in the loop could make these do almost anything, but then I wouldn't have an excuse to collect all of this cool gear!

    Great review! This is my favorite amp so far and I had many over the years. Very 3d and full sounding. Notes jump out really nicely.. Stick to JJ EL34L tubes for best results. Also, it sound better with the top back cover panel off!

    Really nice vid! I've got a Street Rod (2016) and just got the matching 112 cab. Jazz on a Splawn, nice! Great history of Splawn as well in this vid. Good work, you really showed off the versatility of Splawn amps. One thing to note, having the gain channel's volume up that high will really lessen the effect of the solo boost. I actually use the solo boost quite a bit and have to have the gain volume around 9:00.

    nice vid, very thorough and informative. I own a 2013 QR with KT88s and love it to death. For metal tones, It can get very aggressive with the right boost, so far the Friedman Buxom Boost is my favorite, the MXR ZW44 works very well also, I can play Drop A 7 String modern metal with a bad ass tone. Cheers dude!

    Hey man, quick question if you see this. Since the clean channel doesn't have a separate gain control like on the QR, does it stay clean even at super high volume (band level) or it breaks up/distort? There's one on sell right now (converted into a head) and it's tempting but if the clean ''crunches'' at high volume, it wouldn't be good for since I really want a clean channel that stays...well..clean hahahaha

    • @totallyradguitars959
      @totallyradguitars959  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Hey! Sorry man, I sold this amp a while back so I don’t exactly remember. I do remember thinking it stayed clean as loud as I ever played it but it’s a hazy memory and I’m also less particular about very-clean-cleans. I would expect it to be super clean right up until you start overdriving the PI and power tubes which is probably ~120db or so

  • @cirkusrockband-denver7411

    Great review! I am thinking about getting a QR, but I am debating if I should get the 50w instead of 100w. I know that the volume difference is only 3db, but tone wise does that change much from the 50w to the 100w one? The reason why I was thinking about the 50w is because, yes it will be a little bit more manageable playing gigs at a decent volume but I believe the 50w would have a little bit more compression which I would prefer. Any comments/advice would be appreciated. Thanks

    • @bengirard1984
      @bengirard1984 Před rokem +1

      I don't know if you got one since, but having owned a 100, these amps are so god damn loud that a 50w is more than enough haha It's not like, for example, the EVH 5150 III 100 vs 50, where the difference is way more noticeable (I owned both and the 50w sounded way thinner in my band mix than the 100). A Splawn 50w will still be plenty loud and full sounding.

    This is what I’m looking for in a gigging amp… I’ve always wanted to strictly use amp OD rather than pedals… when you say it’s not a pedal friendly amp, I’m assuming you mean in the front, right? The loop and modulation effects work fine with this platform?

    • @totallyradguitars959
      @totallyradguitars959  Před 2 lety

      Yeah, I should’ve been more clear there, pedals sound great in the loop like delays, chorus etc.
      It’s boost pedals through the front that I don’t think were all that spectacular, but it has so much gain you don’t need a boost, so it’s not “bad” by any means. It just doesn’t take on the character of the pedals well - ex, through my JCM800, a Boss sd-1, Ibanez Ts9, and Klon Centaur clone all sound very different. Those same pedals through the Splawn all just sound like “gain boost”

      Thanks! At the moment, my favorite amp is the Ceriatone King Kong, but it's also my newest amp so maybe that's not a fair comparison. Behind that it's a close tie between a 2003 VHT Pittbull 50CL and a 1986 Marshall JCM800 2210. I really should do a video on those.
      Favorite guitar, another tough call, but I the '82 Kramer Pacer with the bent pipes graphic is probably it. After that it's a really tough call, maybe my Kramer Stagemaster, ESP Maverick Deluxe, or a Hamer Californian I have with a maple fretboard. I also have an '88 Kramer Pacer with a fully bound maple neck that would be irreplaceable so that's a keeper as well.
      What about you? Cheers!

      @totallyradguitars959  Před 2 lety

      Congrats man! If you check out one of my other videos where I compare the Quickrod circuits, it should be the same story for yours. 2008-2012 had an extra tube and a cleaner clean channel than the previous ones, but a more muted/darker gain channel. I really like the gain channel on these - that's what yours will have, but it's also why they get the reputation of being "honky" because it's ALL mids.
      The 2005-2007 models have a brighter gain channel but a clean channel that falls apart very quickly. 2012 onwards had a gain channel that is both brighter and bassier than the middle region, with a crystal clear clean channel.
      All of them kind of have their quirks and that's how I somehow ended up with 3 of them from different years haha, slippery slope. Enjoy!

      @@totallyradguitars959 I’m loving the mids so far! I’m coming from a Rockerverb mk3 and everything feels brighter and less compressed. The Splawn feels more responsive and immediate as well. All things I love. I do all the fast one note type riffing in my band and while the Rockerverb is one sweet sounding amp, the raw nature of the Splawn def feels like it is going to sit better in the mix and probably compliment the other guy’s Rockerverb.

      Another thing to note, this is the first time after trying a Vintage 30 about 20 years ago that I have ever enjoyed a different speaker. The Small Block is really nice and if I bought a dedicated cab for this amp I would prob get Small Blocks. 🤟🏻

      @@SunshineHB I have a Rockerverb sitting here too and while I think it's a great amp, it also doesn't quite blow my socks off (but my OR50 sure does). I think those two amps will compliment really well and sounds awesome - I'm glad you are enjoying it.
      I also have some early 90s V30's that I like, but my favorite speaker is a cab of 80s G12-T75's. I had a cab of recent G12-T75's and they only share similarity in name, the old ones are way different sounding. Especially in the small room I play in (I don't play out anymore) those speakers have a little less upper mid cut so they don't get as fatiguing to the ear. In a band situation I think the V30 might be better depending on the style of music of course, since the guitar will cut more.

    • @totallyradguitars959
      @totallyradguitars959  Před 2 lety

      It is interesting, since Fender has a complete lock down on the "P" headstock shape, but for whatever reason amps with gold panels aren't considered a copyright infringement. I think they would only have a case if they had copyright on some specific part of the circuit, but considering Marshalls were modified Bassman circuits, and these amps just further modifications, I think a precedent has already been set on that.
