NDT is so excited about knowledge. Stephen nailed it when he said his enthusiasm for learning is infectious
It is sooo sad when some people are NOT excited about knowledge.
The USA seems to have a very high percentage of this type of person.
Why this is, I don't know. Is it the media and/or Hollywood's fault?
He was smiling so hard explaining the Honey Moon. 🧡💛
Bill Nye! 😉😊
@@TonyQKing I'd put a huge failure of education innovation and funding first, maybe media second, and Hollywood a distant third. People don't get exposed to different ways to think, to think about how they think, and to question things in a meaningful way. Reading is another way to get that kind of robust thinking, and it is also drifting away.
NDT is one of the reasons i love learning so much. I grew up with this man in my adult years. Had bill nye as a child. I wish everyone had the thirst for knowledge and improvement that this man has inspired in me. The next Carl Sagar

Current death total: 229,708. Population of Boise, ID: 228,959. If an alien spacecraft descended from the heavens and vaporized Boise, our first reaction would probably be... why Boise? But after that, don't you think the whole country if not the whole world might come together to mount a unified defense against the invader? That is not what happened here in the US. "it's about the size of a refrigerator." Damn.. Americans will use anything as a measure but the metric system.
I don't know ... I think the size of a refrigerator is a measurement most Americans understand instinctively...
When discussing rocks, we(Americans) usually go to kitchen appliance sizes. It's pretty funny actually.
I present to you, the American Scale of Comparative Measurements.
Big as a toaster
Big as a stove
Big as a fridge
Big as a car
Big as a minivan
Big as an RV
Big as a house
Big as a football field
[simple fraction] of a mile
## mile(s)
Big as New York City
Big as [state]
Big as Texas (yes Texas is its own tier. No Alaska though.)
Big as the continental US
Metric is fine for precision, but we don't know the exact dimensions of the rock. Refrigerators are a range of sizes so a comparative scale is more useful.

can he run for congress or senate please? We need scientists in government now more than ever before, and he is very popular and as great of a communicator of science as anyone out there. He and Bill Nye and other well liked science communicators and scientists I think should start considering running for office. The fate of our planet depends on what our elected officials are doing and it is imperative people who are trained scientists who trust the scientific method are running for office now more than ever before.
Good point
Yeah the problem is that most Americans won't vote for atheists or agnostics which most scientists are because you need a open mind for science!
I'd prefer that he stays where he is, doing what he's good at. But getting some folks into government with a background in various sciences would be excellent. Like AZ has an ASTRONAUT running. Seriously?! I also think we need a govt department for dealing with 'technology' of all kinds.
I believe their office should be in science communication. Imagine having them decide on policies on explaining climate change and the theory of evolution in schools... There is a 40% who believe the Earth is less than 10,000 years old. That needs to be dealt with.
We don't need politics, we just need science to govern the planet, people think it's too hard, but it is acctually easy!
Imagine just a glimpse of a Stephen Colbert Presidency, with a Neil DeGrasse VP. Like a warm blanket, the thought soothes my chaotic mind.
I feel better already
Lovely thought but it's just that, a thought! People like Stephen and Neil and, probably you and I aren't drawn to politics and would probably hate the job...that's why we are how we are. It's an awful catch 22 situation. We need a new system, democracy doesn't work and American democracy certainly doesn't work! The best we've got are certain north west European democracies like the Scandanavian democracies or Ireland, Britain, France or Spain and some of these countries still have monarchies for fuck sake. People who would be good at yielding power have no wish to do so that's why they would be good. So what? We force them to thereby making them resentful. It's catch 22 all the way down. We need a new system.
@@samuelrobinson3607 that seems like an insurmountable problem though. What kind of system would fix it? People seeking elections are seeking power by definition and power corrupts pretty much anyone.
@@samuelrobinson3607 The real problem is that democracy is a broken system that doesn't work, it's just better than everything else we've tried. The enemy is human nature and specifically the nature of the people who seek power. To change the system you have to change the laws and the ones who can have a vested interest in not doing so. In short, sucks to be us! (But less than those in less fortunate countries)

The composition of the meteorite matters too. I’d be worried about a metallic asteroid only a tenth of a mile wide.
I honestly don't know much about asteroids, so I'd do what we Americans do these days: I'd get on facebook and see what Dave from high school that failed every science class he ever took has to say about them. Then I'd confirm my decision to listen to Dave by finding the one scientist that posted something that vaguely supports his claims, no matter how many experts on the subject say otherwise.
Or, I'd turn to the experts and see what they have to say, realizing that not all opinions are equal. Either or.

Over the next three months, she worked closely with Tyson, then 59, on the Cosmos set in Santa Fe. He was beloved by the crew, often having lunch with them, high-fiving everyone, and even putting on impromptu science demos.
Tyson quickly promoted Watson to be his assistant. She met his mother, wife, and son when they came to visit, and he met her dad, sister, and fiancé. She thought he was a charismatic and friendly guy - until the night of May 16, when she was driving him home after a long day.
Tyson invited her up to his apartment to “unwind” over a bottle of wine, she recalled. She felt uncomfortable as he gazed into her eyes and held her wrist to feel her “spirit connection.” They spent two hours together, as he made sexual references to song lyrics and described his need for physical release. As she was leaving, he took her by the shoulders and said, “I want to hug you so bad right now, but I know that if I do, I’ll just want more.”
On the car drive home the next day, Watson said, he told her she was “too distracting” to ever make it as a producer. She couldn’t stand the idea of working with him any longer. The following day, she reported the incident and her resignation to a line producer, who suggested that Watson tell everyone she was leaving due to a “family emergency.” So she did.
