  • Peckinpah to say the least was a controversial and quirky director.
    Peckinpah lived life to its fullest. He drank hard and abused drugs, producers and collaborators. In December 1984 when he died from heart failure in a hospital in Inglewood, California, at age 59. At a standing-room-only gathering that was held at the Directors Guild the following month, Coburn remembered the director as a man "who pushed me over the abyss and then jumped in after me. He took me on some great adventures". To which Robert Culp added that what is surprising is not that Sam only made fourteen pictures, but that given the way he went about it, he managed to make any at all.

    Sam was a man with many inner demons. We are fortunate he was able to conquer these enough times to leave us a fine legacy.
    I agree with most of his favorite film picks.

    Here is an interesting fact: Sam’s uncle Roger was a second baseman in the major leagues. Amongst his teams was the 1924 Washington Senators which won their only title that year. One of his teammates on that squad was Hall of Famer Walter Johnson.

    He was far more influential and respected than most of Hollywood will allow themselves to admit!...He changed the face of the American Western
    forever and brought a gritty reality to "action movies", in general, even though most "studio types" won't admit it!...RIP Sam...Great work!...Just sayin'!
