    I enjoy your videos. I teach graduate level education courses so my courses are typically scheduled after school hours (either beginning at 4:30 pm or 7:00 pm). The only exceptions to this are my summer courses which are scheduled during the day. I am only an adjunct (which sucks). Would love to hear some advice about getting a full time position.

I would typically go to my office for a couple hours on a Sunday to prepare for the week.

I’m the same way, I usually would stay in my classroom to get most work done but I always get so worn out by the end of the day I just want to sleep 😂 I also had another question, would you think that there would be a higher job market for Chemistry Ph.Ds or Chemical Education PhDs instead ?

    • @theacademicsociety
      @theacademicsociety  Před 4 lety +1

      @@xxladybug94 I'm not sure how it is for Chemistry but I know that in Math sometimes Math Education PhDs don't have to take as high level math courses. So they can't teach the high level math courses. So depending on the type of job you want when you finish it may be harder. But I'm not sure how it is for Chemistry

    I think I would really love to be a professor! I am just wondering 1) how hard it is to land a tenure-track position when you have graduated from an R I university? Also, 2) if I am a new mom and I want to take a year or two off, is that possible while at the same time securing your tenure-track job? And 3) how hard is a Ph.D. program actually? And, are tenure-track professors not paid well and not guaranteed health insurance if they teach in a "mediocre" college? Lastly, 4) I wonder if professors have the option of taking the summer off; if so, do they get paid for the summers?
    I would really appreciate it if you answered some of these questions!

    • @theacademicsociety
      @theacademicsociety  Před 3 lety

      I will say that a lot your questions depends on the field that you are in. After grad school, it will become more clear what type of professor position you want: instructional faculty member, tenure-track at a liberal arts school, tenure-track at an R1 school. I would say that I didn't know what I wanted to do until my last year of grad school. I realized that I loved teaching more than research so I decided to become an instructional faculty member. All PhD programs are different but they do take a lot of work and time. Salary depends on your field of study. For example, I teach in the math department and I get paid significantly less than my mom who teaches in the business school.

      In my experience, professors aren't trained in teaching. So what they do is all over the board. I've never taken any education classes so I'm sure that what high school teachers do to structure and plan their classes are much more informed. I kind of just do what I notice my students connect most with. It's definitely a learning process.

    • @theacademicsociety
      @theacademicsociety  Před 5 lety +5

      Hey Elide! All you need is a PhD to be a professor. And you don't have to necessarily get your degree in a specific subject to be a professor of that subject. For example, I got my PhD in Math. I could be a professor in a math department, statistics department, engineering department, or business school. It mostly depends on the type of professor you want to be.
      For example, I'm a Lecturer, which means that my focus is on teaching instead of research. If you want to be a tenure track professor, you are mostly hired based on your research. It may be different in other fields, but that's how it is in math.
      I hope I answered your question! Basically, you need a PhD to be a professor and it doesn't matter the field. I've never taken an education course in my life and that's true for most professors who don't study education.
