As a History grad student myself (finishing Masters then likely moving on to PhD), I love this video! I have a much different specialization than yours (twentieth century African American Social and Political History), but still find your work very fascinating! I take research notes in Google Sheets, but you’ve convinced me to use Notion for coursework and general notes.

Also, I am a redheaded historian as well! Thought that was notable enough to add 😂

Whenever I’m doing long and occasionally draining research like this, I find it so so helpful to listen to coffee shop conversation CZcams videos over my headphones to make it feel like there are more people around. Also, I’ll find a desk that faces a wall explicitly so that I don’t see the fact there isn’t anybody around. Basically, if you lie to yourself the right way, you can get away with it lol

Thank you for your work. Black history is so often ignored and it’s infuriating. I’m a community educator but there’s only so much I can do without a PhD. I’m grateful for people like you who commit their energy, skills and talent to this work. Thank you!!

I loved seeing your journey into the archive! I’m in my masters program to become an archivist, and an archives always looks and feels like home!

Thank you for showing us your time in the archives!!
It’s a dream of mine to visit archives in other countries.. hopefully my future studies will allow me to do just that.
Also, you’ve totally encouraged me to use Notion! Such a great way to take notes!

God the first time I went into an archive for research it was the most anxiety inducing but liberating thing. I can't wait to be back in London for more research!

Kaelyn, just stumbled on your content and love it! I was an undergrad at Yale and it gives me nostalgia to follow your journey. If you haven't already checked them out, my favorite places to study on campus were the British art library, the div school library, and Haas!

This is so interesting! I’m currently in high school but I love the idea of pursuing higher education in History and I was wondering what you're trying to do with your PhD, do you want to teach? The idea of being a professor is amazing to me, but the average pay for adjuncts is kind of intimidating.

I actually run three businesses in addition to my pursuing my PhD so I will likely take those full time and work as an independent scholar or work in education technology! I am not sure about pursuing a traditional academic career

I was so excited to watch the archives vlog! I always love seeing inside archives and libraries and I love seeing your research! Though the shear amount of resources can be overwhelming, I hope you can find a way to tackle them and get some good information for your prospectus. Thank you for talking about the not wearing gloves when handling paper materials and books. You lose tactile sense while wearing gloves and can damage the paper. Gloves are needed for items like negatives and photographic prints.

Loving finally seeing you get to go to the archives! I’m a while off archival work myself still, but as someone who is only starting history work now during my PhD I’m currently working on my paleography and transcribing skills. Do you have any tips for starting to get to grips with decoding old handwritings and transcribing documents?

Hi Kaelyn! I am still in undergrad but have been traveling domestically this summer to conduct archival research for my senior history thesis. It's been an amazing-but certainly exhausting-experience. I really enjoyed watching this video to gain insight into what this sort of research looks like at the graduate level. Thank you so much for sharing!

Incredible. Thanks for sharing. I'm Black American but my maternal grandfather was born and raised in Jamaica. He was mixed race. I think it was his mother who was white (from the UK) and his father was a Black Jamaican. It has always been a mystery about my grandparents, but what is so telling is that they owned a horse farm in Jamaica. They were horse breeders in the 19th century. Thanks for all you do!

Hello! Would you be comfortable sharing where you stayed while in London (from the opening scenes of this video)? I'm going on a research trip to London next summer and am trying to find affordable accommodations. Also, a video detailing how to plan/organize a research trip would be great! Have a great day!

Very interesting vlog! As an experimental biologist PhD student, I was wondering how do you acquired data to analyse outside of sciences. It looks extensively draining to stay focus! For me, listening to calm instrumental music/classic music while I need to be focused is a good way to build my bubble (and without lyrics it is less disturbing). This UK trip seems to have been an amazing experience for your research. Was it not too difficult to come back though, with your previous experiences in Oxford?
As always, amazing job for the video creation!!

How to take note of archives, as it's sometimes data, letters and stuff that can be draining. So can you please share some help tips to be followed. However, you share some great tips and stories for all of us. And, a huge thanks to you for what you do.

Being at the archives is so exciting yet so confusing. I'm at the similar stage where I have to convince the interview panel that there are relevant documents in the archives and I know where to look. By the way, could you give me any tips whether the National Archives of UK contains some documents regarding the Rani of Jhansi Regiment of the Japanese-supported Indian National Army during WWII?

Hi!! I enjoy your videos. I’m curious about your research, do you have a video on why you are selecting this as your focus? When looking at slave law (I’m sure I’m not suing appropriate terms) but what are you attempting to explain, reveal
Or share from this research? Thank you, I’m looking forward to learning more.

    • @garrett215
      @garrett215 Pƙed rokem

Coming from someone who works in a university special collections: It’s generally a rule not to use gloves on paper documents, especially fragile ones - they can increase the chance of a tear when turning the page, etc. But archives do often require people to wash their hands before handling those paper documents. If she were handling photographic material she’d likely have to use gloves
