  • I have decided to make a video on how to perform a Valve clearance check on a shim under bucket style cam set up. Exact procedures will vary bike to bike but will all be fairly the same. I am doing this on my 2004 Yamaha FZ1. All said and done it was a lot less intimidating than I thought it would be. I did a lot of research and I triple checked everything while working on it. There is a link to the service manual at the bottom of the description for reference.
This is my first actual video I have edited in ages, so bare with me on the amazing shots and voice overs! If you have any comments on it please feel free to ask, I will try and get to them in a reasonable time to help you out! All questions welcomed! Do not feel stupid for having any, no judgment!

Just a heads up for anyone watching, the cams have markings on them that line up with arrows on the caps when cylinder one is at top dead center. So there's no need to mark the chain or cam gears. As long as the cams line up it doesn't matter how you put the gears and chain on. It will save you some time. Of course you can still do it this way but you really can't mess it up. Also when reinstalling cam caps you tighten criss cross from inside out. Not outside in. That's only for removal. That's per Yamaha Shop Manual. Great video otherwise BTW.

Bro!...ty so much for this video! Your like the only person on the web with a tutorial/explanation for this. I need to get this done, but dreading the cost if I go to a mechanic.

Hi - great video. Loved watching it, just one question, is bypassing EGR can make any harm to the engine ? I mean can I just blank the outlets and get rig of all the other stuff ? Many thanks !!! , regards - Mike.

Does anyone know is this video applies to a 2007 FZ6?

I believe it should be a very similar process. The number of cam lobes might be different, but that shouldn't affect much.
