Okay a little advice it won't stop it from growing from the network, using a torch and lighting the top of the stumps of the bamboo will stop that shoot from regrowing
We actually like the shoots for the time being, our cows and goats adore them! But great tip, thanks for sharing!
Love the "no one use items" rule. My wife and I lived on a boat for many years and followed the same reasoning. Even our anchor doubled up as a paperweight. 😜 We now live on a bamboo farm in Panama and I also harvest our poles with a Ryobi reciprocating saw. It's a little tricky on larger poles but still easier than a chainsaw.
We recently got a mini chainsaw, and it works really well - but still use the reciprocating saw at the base.
The no "one use" items has been huge for us - it's a space saver and money saver 😀

My Bauer reciprocating saw is the best all round cutting tool I have. I own a chainsaw, but the downside is that the chains go dull quick. I originally got it to cut some metal pieces on my car, but when I first saw the pruning blades I had to give a try and they work wonders! Like you, I’ve used it bamboo clearing as well.

Most the time they fall nicely - other times they get caught up in each other - LOL
For the bamboo on my recip saw I got a 14 teeth per inch blade. Melts like butter. You just need like a 5pack cause they heat up and I bent one in half overusing it.
Like one of the ones designed for cutting metal.

There is a type called "clumping" bamboo that isn't supposed to spread, but I'm skeptical after having to deal with this stuff.
You can get clumping bamboo rather than running bamboo, it won't spread
Absolutely, but unfortunately we were "blessed" with all this chaos when we bought our property. But certainly for anyone interested, clumping is much better 😀

What would you use the bamboo for around the farm?
I use the Ryobi saw too, works great. I might get the mini chainsaw, have been looking at them. That is a lot of Bamboo, It is one fast growing plant. I have to deal with it too. Thanks.
Yes it is so fast and so annoying! The mini chainsaw looks like it works really well.

Great video. I discovered using an oscillating tool for bamboo recently. It's probably not quite as easy to use for some cases as the reciprocating saw, but you can literally cut smooth to the ground. Nice smooth cut too.

It's a weed eater with a saw blade on it. I think my husband explains it either in this video or another in how to set it up.

According to the Clemson University, once you get them taken down - if you keep mowing (or goats keep eating) the shoots, after a few years it will just give up and stop growing. It should take between 3-5 years. The good thing is - goats love it, and they will be arriving on our homestead soon!!

your doing a great job for sure just wondering i see that was a carbide tooth saw blade and the one i use for heavy grass is a dual purpose grass and brush, well to be honest i hit the ground and dirt stones ext, it is not carbide tipped and i just take my angle grinder with a 80 grit flap disk on the blade clamped in the bench vice and just touch each tooth and it cuts fine until the next rock or whatever dulls it again . I also wonder if a small flat file would do the same on the reciprocating blades and save you a few bucks

I have tons of bamboo in my garden and I’m trying to cut down as much as I can before It all overgrows and destroys the garden and It’s difficult as well because my garden is basically like a slope and by cutting It down It will let In more sunlight Into the Kitchen & my room
Bamboo is some evil stuff, we are almost completely cleared! And it seems that if you keep up with the new sprouts it does give up over time.. so, there is good news 😃

Yes! We already have a ton stacked up. It's not cured though, which is a whole other subject of time and resources, but worth if for anyone that can. We're thinking of holding on to a bit and have it contained for future use when we have more time to work with it, and as a source of tree hay - but we'll see 😊

So many uses for bamboo but I’d worry about it taking over.
True and true! Our first thought when we bought this place was "No problem, we can use it!"... Then quickly realized, it would be years before we will be able to get it under control.last spring we were chopping an average of 20 new shoots everyday popping up in our newly cleared areas😲

@@HomesteadFreshfrom where I'm at, we do eat the shoots, of course take extra precautions of the hair when extracting it. It's itchy as hell if it get into contact to your skin. You got some food and weed control at the same time. Try cook some and figure out what's recipe suits best for you guys, cheers

Wellllll.... Luckily, no. We did have about 40 feet long and 20 foot across by the roadside that was briar patch central climbing every stalk of bamboo. It was a complete nightmare! But we were fortunate that was all the it was... We thank our stars we don't have any kudzu on our property😃

What did u use to make that?
Currently, we have a 10" blade on it. Just a standard weed eater with a standard table saw blade.
We have a mess with bamboo. Please share with us the brand of weed eater and the blade you're using? Possibly how to attach the blade? We have been battling bamboo someone else planted, for 20 plus years. Last year I was too ill too tackle it and it has now gotten away from us.
Please help.
We feel your pain - this was planted about 10 years ago from what the neighbors have told us, and it's insane!

We now use an Echo weed eater, but we started with a Ryobi. The blade is just a general purpose circular saw blade. You remove the weed eater head and put the blade in its place. We did have to find a washer and a nut to make the blade fit properly because the hole on the blade is slightly larger than the weed eater head.

What's the second tool you showed?
We discussed the weed-eater with the circular saw blade attached and a one-handed reciprocating saw.
Though, if you're looking to clear bamboo, we have upgraded to a 10" table saw blade attached to our weed-eater to get the stumps out, and a Saker mini chainsaw to cut the main part off the bamboo.
We actually discuss this a bit in our video coming out tomorrow.
