I remember seeing this in the theater in summer of 90 IIRC. It was the summer between my freshman and sophomore years of high school. I think I saw it as a double with Robocop 2, and the previous week or two I saw Total Recall. Lots of crazy movies out that year... And yeah, where the heck did all the years go...
I miss the 80s and early 90s movies with anthemic music scores and paused endings and total feel good awesomeness. Bring it back please instead of the depressing crap we get nowadays....

This is the best NASCAR movie that has ever been made or ever will be made. The fact that they actually build real to-spec race legal NASCAR vehicles, fitted them with film cameras and ran them in races is amazing (and something that would likely not happen in 2023)

Sometimes you just can’t beat a super feel good movie ending. This whole scene never ceases to make me smile especially the “Hell....I’ll race your ass” and the freeze frame with them both smiling to cap it all off.
The freeze frame doesn’t lie, neither we’re acting here, but Duvall especially wasn’t. I we saw it with Gone in Sixty Seconds, Duvall loves these roles. Shame we never saw a full fledged Can Am, Le Mans or F1 movie with him in it.. We at least have this Gem! ❤️👌

I always loved the way Randy Quaid made everyone help push the car out. It was a slight mystery as to how the car was ready to run in the race until he reveals at that point that it was his engine he gave and how he cared about helping Cole. Showed class and compassion.
Honestly, I saw it more as Tim(Randy's character) returning the favor to Cole and Harry for helping him get his team established and making it a winner. That and I think he wanted to make his driver Russ earn his win too because why not? He's paying him, so might as well see what he's made of when it the pressure's on.
Yeah, that's a nice part. However, the engine bit is revealed just before the race when Harry tells Cole that the car had a problem and it's been taken care of and the camera pans to Quaid's character.
I was listening to CZcams on my way home from family dinner on Thanksgiving a few years ago and this randomly popped up About 2/3 of the way thru it I noticed I was passing everyone looked down and I was at 95mph “Oh crap need to slow down”.
In my opinion, this is the best damn racing movie ever conceived. And i thought it was awesome as hell to see Robert and Tom together in the first installment of Jack Reacher.
One of the best car racing flims of all time. The car scenes are legendary, as are the ones of Tony Scott, but I am so impressed by the story of friendship, love, will, and so on. R.I.P. TONY SCOTT.

I still love the meaning of the beginning of this scene.It relates to things in normal life as well.When he is racing slow at the start and staying in last is because he is scrared.Then a wreck happens just like the one that got him horribly hurt.And in that second he had two choices,lift off and give up,or floor it and get past it.Not only the wreck but also his mental struggles.Once he got past the wreck he was also cured of his fear and came back to life with himself and his driving.This can relate to other peoples normal problems.There is always that wreck we are trying to avoid thats holding us back.But it can be overcome so never give up.
Good movies aren't just about what's happening on the screen. Those events on the screen are metaphors for life, and good art affirms the virtues we need to live a happy life.
What makes this scene even better it's not just Cole facing his fears here, it's Harry too. He too was dealing with his past demons of Daytona during this race. Why else would he tell Cole to blow the motor when the accelerator stuck and then begged him to stop trying to pass Russ during the final laps? He was afraid he'd end up like his last driver and tried to get him to not risk his life. Like Harry did with Cole earlier, Cole made Harry face his fears when he needed to the most and see it through no matter what. As far as I'm concerned, it's beautiful symbolism.
"I'm through it, Harry!" - So true, and a great double entendre! I love these classics because the messages were simple, but true: you don't overcome your fears unless you're willing to face them head on. And once you do, you change. No matter how talented or successful you are, we all crash at some point and have to face our fears and failings. But the only way to really lose is to give up; if you can stay resilient, you can get through it.
I love the freeze frame at the end. The music puts it over the top. Tom Cruise and Robert Duvall were great together in this movie and played off of each other really well. It's a shame they did not do other projects.
My fav Tom Cruise movie and my favourite scene, especially from 1:26 onwards, when Cole drives through the crash. Talk about 'feel the fear and do it anyways'! That's where he gets his courage back and then the music hits, and "I'm through Harry...haha I'm outta here!". Freaking awesome :) High concept movie making at it's best!
Keep in mind, the Daytona 500 is the season opener of the NASCAR season, so the fact he wins is like a "Happily ever after" ending, in that we see him return to form and then we can imagine whether he returns to form and wins the Winston Cup or he falls short, the ultimate conclusion is the for the viewer. Also, 2 years after this movie in the Hooters 500, the final race of the 1992 season, the eventual champion Alan Kulwicki needed his pit crew to push his car out for the final leg of the race because his 1st gear gave out.
Kings Dominion (theme park in northern Virginia) in the 90s had a Days of Thunder motion ride where you buckled into a padded seat and the seat emulated the race car during this scene. It was in an auditorium with a big screen and sound just like a theatre. It was awesome.
In the 90s the race cars sounded the best. I remember as a kid loved going to my local track Martinsville speedway when nascar came to town. Glad I got to also meet some of the greats like Dale Earnhardt,Neil Bonnett, Jeff Gordon,Rusty Wallace.

Loved this movie when I was a kid (I used to watch NASCAR all the time with my grandfather). I even own the Days of Thunder NES game (it still works). One of Tom Cruise's best movies.
When I look back on it, Cole's last lap pass was just a basic mix-up move, but it remains the most epic one i've seen. Definitely didn't think that much when I first saw this movie some 20 years ago.
I can say that I am a Days of Thunder fan when I was 12 years old. I am a fan of the sport of motorsport and this is my favorite spoiled movie and I have it in all three Video formats; VHS, DVD, BLU RAY, I even have the video game in NES NINTENDO
Robert Duval is such an amazing actor, his reaction when Cole wins is amazing, also everytime i watch this movie, not only does Robert remind me of my grandfather he looks like him too.
This movie is probably my all-time favorite simply because I grew up with it and it has a strong Nostalgia feeling and the number of one-liners this movie has I still say to this day and they always crack me up
The two best lines in the movie are nearly back to back. “Harry, this guys going down!” Followed right up by “this one’s for you Harry” absolutely phenomenal
When I'm sometimes late for work, I think about the scene, "Cole you'll be at max speed when the green flag drops," when I find that open lane on the free way and fly past everyone.
We had Maverick in 2022 and it was amazing. It still had the magic of the first Top Gun. If they did a sequel to Days of Thunder today, why not? Hell, Duvall is still around. All of the cast is still going. Days of Thunder has been seen a billion times by countless people. God I've watched it at least a hundred in my life. It's a classic. I think it would work if it was done right like Maverick.
Man I remember two things...when Burger King had a DOT promotion they’ll give you a cast iron Cole trickle Mello yellow mini car and the DOT ride. Awesome.
As a 41 year old I remember watching this with my best friends who are no longer amongst us. When I watch this on CZcams I'm ten again and my friends that I can no longer see are watching this with me.
When Cole crosses the finish line and it shows Harry quietly celebrate by his whole body tensing up since he basically did a fist pump with his whole body. It shows he was excited he won, a self accomplishment with his team, and at the same time ,shocked at what Cole can do out there on the track, especially there at the end. Acknowledging silently the words Cole told him, that he is going to win Dayton, and that he wouldn’t make a fool out of him. Just wonderful detail. Such a great Bruckheimer movie.
I've done it a few times on iRacing LOL. Yea definitely Dale or Tony or Bush would do that for a win in a heart beat if the cars weren't so fragile like they are now.
They could put this in the movie theatre’s in 2020 and it would still produce monster numbers. Movies like this never die!

My fav Tom Cruise movie and my favourite scene, especially from 1:26 onwards, when Cole drives through the crash. Talk about 'feel the fear and do it anyways'! That's where he gets his courage back and then the music hits, and "I'm through Harry...haha I'm outta here!". Freaking awesome :) High concept movie making at it's best!
I still have all the matchbox versions of these cars. Great memories watching this as a kid.

That ending makes me tear up everytime.... That smile they have while running! What a great ending.
Keep in mind, the Daytona 500 is the season opener of the NASCAR season, so the fact he wins is like a "Happily ever after" ending, in that we see him return to form and then we can imagine whether he returns to form and wins the Winston Cup or he falls short, the ultimate conclusion is the for the viewer.
Also, 2 years after this movie in the Hooters 500, the final race of the 1992 season, the eventual champion Alan Kulwicki needed his pit crew to push his car out for the final leg of the race because his 1st gear gave out.
Kings Dominion (theme park in northern Virginia) in the 90s had a Days of Thunder motion ride where you buckled into a padded seat and the seat emulated the race car during this scene. It was in an auditorium with a big screen and sound just like a theatre. It was awesome.

In 2020, my hometown theater showed this movie and I was lucky enough to go see it. The sound of the cars was amazing through the speakers.
In the 90s the race cars sounded the best. I remember as a kid loved going to my local track Martinsville speedway when nascar came to town. Glad I got to also meet some of the greats like Dale Earnhardt,Neil Bonnett, Jeff Gordon,Rusty Wallace.

Loved this movie when I was a kid (I used to watch NASCAR all the time with my grandfather). I even own the Days of Thunder NES game (it still works). One of Tom Cruise's best movies.
I’ve watched this scene about 200 times and it still gives me goosebumps every single time! PLEASE RERELEASE IT IN THEATERS
When I look back on it, Cole's last lap pass was just a basic mix-up move, but it remains the most epic one i've seen.
Definitely didn't think that much when I first saw this movie some 20 years ago.
I can say that I am a Days of Thunder fan when I was 12 years old. I am a fan of the sport of motorsport and this is my favorite spoiled movie and I have it in all three Video formats; VHS, DVD, BLU RAY, I even have the video game in NES NINTENDO
They need to make a remaster for this masterpiece like Top Gun.
Robert Duval is such an amazing actor, his reaction when Cole wins is amazing, also everytime i watch this movie, not only does Robert remind me of my grandfather he looks like him too.

We had Maverick in 2022 and it was amazing. It still had the magic of the first Top Gun. If they did a sequel to Days of Thunder today, why not? Hell, Duvall is still around. All of the cast is still going. Days of Thunder has been seen a billion times by countless people. God I've watched it at least a hundred in my life. It's a classic. I think it would work if it was done right like Maverick.

Man I remember two things...when Burger King had a DOT promotion they’ll give you a cast iron Cole trickle Mello yellow mini car and the DOT ride. Awesome.
As a 41 year old I remember watching this with my best friends who are no longer amongst us. When I watch this on CZcams I'm ten again and my friends that I can no longer see are watching this with me.

When Cole crosses the finish line and it shows Harry quietly celebrate by his whole body tensing up since he basically did a fist pump with his whole body. It shows he was excited he won, a self accomplishment with his team, and at the same time ,shocked at what Cole can do out there on the track, especially there at the end. Acknowledging silently the words Cole told him, that he is going to win Dayton, and that he wouldn’t make a fool out of him. Just wonderful detail. Such a great Bruckheimer movie.
