Australia Once Had Silver Crowns! But They Only Lasted 2 Years...

- The Australian Crown is a popular coin with collectors and for good reason. They represent a period of currency experimentation in Australian currency history and many keen collectors will appreciate Australia's longstanding history with experimental currency whether the concept be borrowed from another nation or entirely unique.
Thanks for watching and for a wide range of collectables, coins and banknotes from all over the world come on down to www.ThompsonsCoins.com
A great part of Australian history, yes given the opportunity I would walk around with a pocket full of crowns!
Me too! I love the simple design and obviously being a hefty silver coin never hurts!
Thanks for watching :)
That is a nice looking coin!! I bet the fellows at the mint were furious at Edward...I can imagine their faces when they were watching coins struck and someone running in with the news as coffee explodes from their mouths....
Hahahaha I can only imagine the delight after the hundreds of hours spent finalising the designs too!! Thanks for watching and I hope you are well!! :)
@@ThompsonsCoins I kind of wish there were video of this moment...HILARIOUS!
Nice 👍 one , two of my favourites cheers Matt .✅💰🇦🇺
Thanks for stopping by Mark, I'm glad you liked it!
Thanks Matt, great vid 👍
Thanks for the kind words Dan!
Nice and informative video, thanks🙆♂️.btw, I have a 2 penny cartwheel, (1797) and can relate to the heft of a ‘large’ coin. Cheers Matt🙋🏻♂️
Hi from canada ... I love aussie coins ... modern and old ... thanks for the awesome video
Thank you very much for watching! It is very exciting to know that people from overseas are seeing my videos :)
Great video!
Thanks for watching mate! 👍
1:58 "What's the 'S' for?" We (you and I) both said that at the same time 🤣🤣🤣
I guessed wrong "system" 🤦♀️
Ah "service" ..... that makes a lot more sense 🤣
If I were a little more pedantic I would have edited that out but I think it's important to see my moments of weakness!
Thanks for watching Kate :)
Good information, thanks!
Thanks for watching Dean! ☺️☺️
@@ThompsonsCoins IChecked my collection and I only have the 1937☹️👍
I love this design. It’s simple and beautiful and I like the large size of the coin. I have two 1937’s no ‘38 as yet. All crowns are large coins I think even the British ones, of which I have a few.
Exactly. They were bulky, heavy and a big coin with big face value. There weren't a lot of people who could afford to have crowns for spending at that time. That added to the lack of appeal for them. Personally, i collect them and even have one in my wallet. It was the first crown i aquired some 20 or so years ago and its always been in my wallet, right alongside the first '66 50c coin i bought back in 1998. That cost me a whopping $2.50 back then. The crown cost me $20.
I myself really like the crown but I can see that not wearing a belt would have been an issue with a pocket full of them. lol Thanks for sharing Matt.
Thanks for watching Phil! I'm a big fan of the crowns too :)
I’d never seen or heard of these prior to finding one in a street market place in Shanghai many years ago! I was very excited to buy it and have picked up a few more now! You’ll probably inherit them mate 😅
Hey matt have a 37 hope one day to own a 38 cheers mate keep up the good work.
Thanks for watching Paul and it's great to hear you already have a crown in your collection! :)
Pretty coin 🤩
Isn't it neat! :)
@@ThompsonsCoins I see you have the Wildflowers of Australia coin on your website. Is it only being released as an encapsulated 1oz coin? No blistercard, beauty box, or collectible packaging?
And, do you know how many designs this series will have? I haven't found any info other than the current release.
I like them
And once again you're first in the comments section! Thanks for watching Kayne! :)
Perhaps we should mention that forgeries exist of both of these coins. There plenty of information on the web as to how to spot them.
Given it’s almost 3/4 of an ounce of silver the $35 for a cleaned crown is good value.
I don’t think a Crown would work in todays era of plastic money aka credit cards.
If it did it would have to be small and unique and a different colour to what we have now.
They do indeed, which is why it is always best to buy from a reputable dealer :)
I tend to agree, but I have a skewed view as a collector so I hope for many impractical additions to our circulating currency!
@@ThompsonsCoins that’s why I buy from trusted dealers. I have very little faith in people I don’t know. It’s sad to treat all people like that but people don’t care if they rip you off. I see people dealing in Hot Wheels cars and they are getting ripped off over $2 cars so when it comes to bullion and coins the stakes are much higher. Gosh I even seen a fake $2 poppy coin the other day and the poppy was painted with nail polish and it was hundreds of dollars.
I’d like to see a better looking currency as I see coins as affordable works of art.
I have a 1937 Crown. It is rather big and I definitely would not want one in today's market. Great in the collection though.
Would love a aussie crown for my collection of British coins but there way to much over here
Perhaps one will turn up eventually, if you find yourself in a pinch though, I can post anywhere in the world! 🤓 Thanks for watching!
@@ThompsonsCoins thanks
Change over version would've been good
The $2 from 2016 features a mini crown design but it would have been cool to see a blown up version of it in circulation again for sure!
So the crown is a bit cumbersome eh? That explains why you don’t wear yours! Haha just scuffin ya boots mate, is that a crown in your pocket? 😏
You are too kind Ryan, thanks for watching!! :)
A 1938 is on my wish list.
Thanks for waving those beauties in my face Mat.
I'd say the current 50c will change to a smaller size eventually, so no... no I don't think coins the size of crowns would take off.
Even the costs of the metal in making a coin that big - what face value would it need to justify that? $5? Yeah... nah. That's a no from me.
Any time! Thanks for stopping by :)
They did that in New Zealand in 2006 so there is certainly a precedent for shrinking down the larger denominations!
I was just trying to forget how I DON'T HAVE a 1938 Crown anymore!
Oh how I want one again!
I have noticed the price of an uncirculated 1938 has dropped DRAMATICALLY since my old collection dwindled away 🥺! Around 7 or 8 years ago a good unc was worth up to $2,000. True true!
There was a HUGE crash in the market just after that time ( I think) Some HUGE Numismatic Co. went busy and took BILLIONS off the table. That means a very good thing now.
Prices are lower now. Much lower than I remember BUT the market is starting to move very quickly again for some coin groupings. The rest seem to be stable and ready to go up again. THAT prediction is from a man who has never made a dime from coins. So take it with caution.
Matt knows!
He teaches me every day. Thankyou Matt Thompson! Cya! 🇭🇲🤗
