Brilliant tutorial, I’ve painted (winged it) two battalions so far but will be using your guidelines for my next ones. Thank you.
Thank you, glad you like it 😊
Thank you for the excellent tutorial for painting white. The use of the lighter blue for highlights was also very reassuring and liberating.
Thank you 🙂
Love how this came out, really got me pumped to try painting epic
Thank you 🙂
About to start the French so thanks
Hopefully it’s useful 🙂
I fooled your painting and Iam very chuffed with my finished French, Thank you 👍
Thank you, it’s great to hear it’s worked for you and you’re happy with the outcome.
Mate, I recently found the below details as a means of helping shako plume colours and where they deploy in a French battalion' from left to right
Voltiguers (yellow) - 4th Coy (purple) - 3rd Coy (orange) - 2nd Coy (blue) - 1st Coy (green) - Grenadiers (red)
Cheers
Thank you David
Now I need the artillery and cavalry videos.
They will happen at some point for sure.
Du hast eine tolle maltechnik und man kann viel lernen. Es war vom Kommentar nicht böse gemeint. Bist weiterhin gespeichert und ich freue mich auf jedes neue Video. Vielen Dank für dein Feedback
Thank you that’s very kind 🙂
Thanks Stuart. Another great video 👍
Thank you Paul 🙂
Thanks Stu. Absolute legend. Sorry for all the badgering 😁
😂 I deserved it, took way longer than I’d planned.
Another great video Stuart, also enjoyed your 10mm middle earth bids I've just bought the strength and honour rules and sent off for a few 2mm ancient armies, the pile of shame will be growing lol
Thank you Simon 🙂. I remember having some 2mm ECW back in the mid 90s, they were great.
Excellent video once again. My stuff still sits waiting patiently in boxes and for the Guard / Highlander boxes to arrive. Just about to embark on a WW2 10mm project but that will be much faster than these. Really want a clear schedule for when I start the Epic Napoleonic then it’ll be head down until they’re done 😀
Thank you 🙂
I still need to get my ‘head down’ with these and really get some meaningful level of minis painted so I can play 😂
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
Hopefully it helps 🙂
THANKS BUDDY
🙂
Great stuff again Stuart 👏 👍
Thank you Graeme
Looks great, nice job.
Thank you 🙂
I've been painting my first few strips of French and a colour that I can recommend for the the blue that's somewhere inbetween your two choices is another Vallejo colour called Prussian Blue 965. I don't have any contrast paints as I'm not neat enough for them to work but I'm getting similar results to you by light grey or white primer coat, block painting all the colours barring white, black wash the whole lot and then highlight colours that warrant it like the blues, reds, khakis, flesh. Lastly the final details is to go over all the straps and white trousers/ turnbacks in Vallejo Off White.
Thank you for the paint recommendation Mike, I might grab some to see how how it compares. I like the sound of your method, I considered something similar.
@@MiniatureRealms PS, I've been painting the greatcoat rolls on top of the pack in the same colours as the greatcoat guys, a mix of Khaki, Grey and sometimes brown, as per your shako cover colours
That’s a good shout, I was thinking of adding some variety to mine and may do a few the same.
@@MiniatureRealms According to what I've looked up the main greatcoat colour in Ligne units was a khaki with grey predominating in Legere and a smattering of brown ones as well
That’s really interesting thank you, that’s given me some ideas about how to represent them as well.
Just bought the French army box set recently. Nice to see how these Army Painter contrasts compare to Citadel.
P.S. - You need to change the batteries in your smoke detectors, bud ;)
😂 I know, luckily it’s just the backup on a mains one, but it’s stuck and we can’t get to the battery. Been putting off sorting it for a while. Good ears though, you can probably hear my kids in the background too 🤣
nice stuff, thanks for the help!!
Thank you
You’ve reminded me of when I was an apprentice (1961). The bosses son wanted his red MG TF sports car respraying from a beautiful red to white. I mean all MG’s should be red. However, pale grey primer, two coats of white cellulose top coat, left to dry overnight.
He opened the paint shop himself. He wasn’t impressed with his newly sprayed with his expensive bright pink sports car.
Jim Elsby, the sprayer said “I told him, grey primer, black next then white primer the 2 coats of white finish with 2 days between coats”.
😳 oh dear 😂
Hey! Nice video. I saw you did a review for the old guard and middle guard one, think you could do a tutorial for it? Would be greatly appreciated.
The Old Guard are my next planned painting tutorial for Epic Waterloo. I hope to have it out in the next couple of weeks 🙂
The scale is measured from foot to eye so they are 10mm
That was definitely the old way of doing it, but wargaming ‘scale’ has never been exact or aligned from one company to the next.
These are definitely way way bigger than any of the 10mm models I have, and I own quite a bit of Pendraken.
These probably are closest to old school 15mm ranges like Minifigs (minifigs are slightly bigger), and not only do many gamers supplement in some models from those of ranges, but Warlord are also now describing these as old style 15s.
Wonderful - I’m new to this..what is the cylinder that your troop line is stuck to for painting? (With the yellow/orange substance)
Thank you. 🙂
It’s a ‘painting handle’, this one is from a company called Redgrass Games. They used to be pretty widely available through hobby stores and on Amazon. The putty at the top is just orange coloured blu tak/poster putty, and you can get extra ‘heads’ that are easy to swap should you have multiple miniatures you’d like to have on them at once.
@@MiniatureRealms awesome thank you!
Thank you so much for these painting vids. Been using all of your techniques with great results. Just a quick question and maybe this is more for the vid when you do the Great coats. I've been looking to use contrast graph charger grey as another color for the French great coats to help vary the color options. I'm just not sure whats a good highlight color for this. Any Suggestions? The Model Color Dark Sand as a highlight works perfectly for Contrast Skeletalhord.
Thank you Henry, I’m really glad to hear they’ve been useful. The way I’ve been highlighting the greatcoats is quite subtle, so I’d be tempted to use a light grey to highlight the gryph charger grey, as anything with a green tinge like it might just make them look green. This way you will still get that variety in tone from the colour that’s in the recesses, but not overpower it. I’ve used it myself and I think that’s what I did.
Great video! Will you be doing the French Cavalry from the box set by chance?
Thank you. I’d like to, it’s currently planned in soon, so hoping to have the time to do them.
Hi mate,
Had this sent to me because I bought the box.
Excellent tutorial and really enjoyed the watch, great content and you’ve def won me over to sub.
Something I’m really struggling with (this is my first experience of mini painting outside of 40K)
Is how do I know what unit is what and what colour scheme I’m supposed to paint squads and what quantity of them squads I’m supposed to produce.
If you could point me in the right direction I’d be grateful.
Hi there, firstly thank you and glad you like the content.
To (try and) answer your questions I’d firstly say don’t worry too much, the kind of information you’re after will come. First off Black Powder (as well as many other historical games) is very different to 40k in terms of game set up, it’s not as strict about side of unit and army, and in many cases players look to re-fight historical actions/and or play games with no points or matched armies. The Epic Waterloo rulebook sets out how units are set up, so that’s a good place to start, but many people change this to suit themselves or their playing groups. This is very normal in historical gaming, if you’re used to 40k that might be strange at first, all depends on how you game.
If you’re thinking from an historical point of view, there are some great documentaries on CZcams about the period, just get lost in fun research. Book wise there’s obviously Libraries worth of texts on the period, though Osprey books on the period are great for a starting point, focus on many different topics (battles/tactics/uniforms etc), great for wargamers.
I’ve included a link in the video description for the website I often use for Waterloo uniforms, just change the language in your browser if you get stuck on the French. I’ve also just added a link to the Epic Waterloo Facebook group that I set up when the release announced last year, it’s got over 2k members now and is extremely new person friendly, lots of experienced gamers in the period who will be able to answer loads of your questions.
You can also find Miniature Realms (me) on Facebook, Instagram, twitter (links in the description as well). I’m always happy to help were I can, so feel free to shoot me a message on any of those places, my email is there as well if you don’t do social media.
Stu
You will need to turn tv off for a while and start getting History reading and watching www.napolun.com/mirror/napoleonistyka.atspace.com/napoleonic_uniforms.html . get back if you need more questions

Hey Stuart
I don’t have any of the speed paints. What contrast blue would you use instead?
Hi Lewis, Contrast Ultramarine is very similar, just not quite so rich.
Great stuff again!
Just a quick note, on some of your videos I here a high pitched beep. It makes me think my fire alarm battery is low.
This time out it occurs right at the start then again 47 seconds in, then at 1.19. Seems to continue every 30 seconds or so.
Though u might want to know!
Thanks
Cheers Joe. Yes it’s the back up battery for one of my smoke alarms, it’s mains powered but we have an issue replacing the back up battery.
@@MiniatureRealms glad u know!
On one of your earlier videos it had me walking around my house trying to work out the issue 😀
😂 Sorry
Love the video… however… I can’t be the only one to notice this, can you change your smoke detector battery!? That damn chirp is super loud and distracting… how can you not notice the chirp??????
😆 I knew, but there was an electrical fault causing it, not the battery in the end. All fixed, that video was recorded quite a while back.
@@MiniatureRealms lol no worries! Just getting into epics and looking for guides! Appreciate the great vid, definitely going to watch more of your stuff!!
Thank you Sean 😊

Thank you for the feedback, I used translate but I think I know what you mean. It’s a bit of a balance, I try to edit it down and I’m getting there 😂. I have quite a few subscribers that liked the longer format as well, so it’s a bit of a balance, but I genuinely appreciate the feedback.
