Should you buy the Steam Deck OLED in 2024?

  • The Stead Deck OLED has been out for a few months now - is it still worth the $550+ price tag? The Steam Deck OLED used specifically in this video is the Limited Edition version, which cost almost $700.

I feel the oled came out too closely to the deck 1, like I did get mine late and that's fair enough, but had I waited 7 months, I would have held out for an oled.
I'll be saving for the deck 2 though!

I have the lcd deck and I use it just about every day. I've been playing ghostrunner mostly. The main thing I love about the deck is the ability to enter rest mode and pick up from where I left off at later. I don't have as much time to game anymore. It beats turning on my pc and having windows updates take up all my gaming time lol. I admittedly didn't like the idea of the deck at first as I've always been a keyboard and mouse gamer. The deck controls feel so amazing I don't miss the mouse and keyboard one bit.

As a long time PC gamer, who has always dreamed of the day PC gaming would go handheld, I'm just so happy we're finally here at this point. Not just with Steam Deck, but all the handheld PC's currently on the market. I'm excited for all of them; I want this market to flourish (and put the fear of god into Nintendo).
Steam Deck is still the best in terms of price to performance and simplicity, and its existence has encouraged other companies to compete in the market and keep their prices affordable, which considering how expensive PC gaming can be, is incredible.
The Ally, for example, would have cost $1000+ if the Steam Deck didn't exist, just like Chinese handheld PCS were priced at previously before the Deck came along and redefined the market.

I do not own a Steam Deck but do plan on getting one soon and your videos have been instrumental to helping inform myself and others as to our decisions and considerations about the device.
Excited to see some more video's about the home brew capabilities of the device. The video about remote play to a PS5 was cool. I'm always looking for new ways to utilize tech and hand-held computers have come a long way in the past 20 years.
Thanks again for this video. Great job.

For all those people who like to point out how much more performance you get on the ROG Ally or the Legion Go, save it. Don't trash on the Deck until you've tried one. Specs aren't everything. You don't know it yet, but what you really want is the Steam Deck.

This. I had an ROG Ally at launch, returned it due to how janky it was most of the time. I get that it much better now compared to launch however the Steam Deck Oled has a much better ease of use, reliability, battery life and even though the Legion and ROG have much better specs, it only nets a slight increase in capability. I suspect it's more a Windows 11 issue but it is what it is. The SD is just better designed and optomized.

I have a pretty decent gaming pc so I wanted a handheld device other than the switch oled. I didnt really know wich one to pick up and found somebody in my area selling his steam deck oled 512gb for 480$. The device was around 1 month old by that time. I am so in love with this little guy. There is only one minor thing I dislike and that is that 2 of the gacha games I play (wich are also on phone and windows) arent available for it. Other than that I have been playing a lot of older games aswell as the new persona 3 reload and I am just amazed by how well things run on this and look amazing because of the screen.
I hope everybody has such great experiences with their handhelds as I am and I am really looking forward to the handheld pc future.

I love Handheld and small form factor portable PCs. I never could justify getting a GPD device back when they were the DeFacto only player in the game for super small form factor portable/handheld PCs. Because the overall price to performance ratios were just not cutting it, as much as I wanted a GPD Pocket or whatever the newest was at any given time. So now with the Steam Decks, The Ally, the Go, Claw, all the Aya Neo options, the OnexPlayer, just so many great options both from smaller boutique vendors and major volume manufacturers as well as technology catching up enough to make the formfactor more than just a passing curiosity with limited use. I have Both an OG 512GB Deck, a LE OLED Deck, and an ROG Ally [that I will eventually swap out, Micro SD card murdering failure that it is.] I love them all and want to be able to support all of them to some degree. Even with its issues, I like the existence of the Claw as well. Hoping my Next Ally doesn't end up having the SD card reader go rogue, but I just haven't had the time to go swap it out at best buy. [got the protection for a reason]
Personal impulse control problems aside, I love my steam decks, and my ally, The OLED deck is the only device I have that supports HDR, and it's nice, but I don't really get the hype of HDR all that much. But the OLED screen looks amazing overall. I mostly got the OLED deck because I am a sucker for limited edition stuff, and I was able to afford it at the time it was announced, and orders went live. So, I just jumped on it. And I am glad I did. The performance improvements are more noticeable than you would think despite the numbers being 'within margin of error' they are consistently just a little better, likely just because of the little bits of efficiency increases, but also that faster ram provides a huge boost.
We really have reached a point where a PS4 like handheld isn't a pipe dream. It's reality. My Nintendo Switch has basically gone unused since I got the deck. With the exception of the launch of tears of the kingdom I have spent so little time on my switch I have considered offloading my entire switch library. [including a fair number of games that are still sealed NIB.]

If you are undecided: steam deck has 2 "exclusive features" over the competition: it has steam OS, and it has trackpads. If you're ok with windows and with aiming in shooters with analog sticks (or to play these games only docked and with mouse & keyb) then you'll be okay with more powerful and more recent devices, that will also cost quite some more (comparing the cheapest versions).

  • @brandongabel
    @brandongabel Před 2 měsíci +3

Sorry to be that guy, but you really don’t need to overspend. The base OLED is the best option @ $585 after shipping and tax. Within a respectable 512gb, id argue that’s plenty for most games, but even expanding storage on your own is extremely cheap with SD cards and only slightly more expensive with replacing an internal SSD to 1TB. At most, you’d spend $650 after the optional upgrades, making this an incredible budget PC handle. Personally my favorite piece of tech and game device of all time.

And the colors are slightly more washed out on the 1tb because of the etched screen. The glossy 512’s colors pop a lil more. I think the etched screen causes it to lose a little contrast. They need to improve on that.

If I can I always prefer a console to a pc, less headaches for me tuning a pc to play games. Besides my laptop is good enough. Maybe a Steamdeck 2 could be interesting.
