1978 for me. 16 years old. Yellow "Kenny Roberts" FS1-E. We used to ride all day to nowhere in particular. Not convinced mine went much beyond 45mph realistically.
My FS1E used to go 55mph, used to beat Ap50 that went a supposably 60mph even heard of them going 65mph still used to beat them on the flat, what great days the late 1970s were
this brings back memories all of my mates had fizzies i was the only one with a ap50 i used be out in front where ever we went used to think i was king of the road until one day a ss50 flew past me as i was doing 55mph on my ap flat out i eventually found out he had swapped barrells with a c70 we became great friends
My older brother had a ss50 4 speed in 1977, and did everything he could to try and make it quicker ( as you do) but the thought of swapping top ends with a c70 or c90 never came up - that would have been a whole different ballgame! 😎
I did the same thing with my SS50, there was an article in Motorcycle Mechanics about fitting a C70 barrel and piston, they said shave 10 mm off the base of the piston skirt which I got the metalwork teacher to do at school. Certainly gave it more go.
I bet I wasn't the only one who made this big screen to see how fast you were going and NOT looking at the traffic! Great Vid, I felt like |I was 16 all over again! 🙂
Never had anything smaller than a 250cc. In hind sight I wish I had of experienced the 50cc class. A lot of skill learnt on these machines. As said by many, better to ride a slow bike fast than a fast bike slow. Took me a long time to truly understand the meaning behind it. Great video,
Mine was a 1975 N reg, I got it December 1976, so many happy memories, even a few Skegness runs, I’m still riding now and have had many bikes since, currently a 700, but I’m dropping to bits now and can’t get out. I wish I still had my fizzy, exactly the same colour too
!982 for me, 16yo bought a purple '74 on an M reg - seat cover was ripped so i fitted a faux white sheepskin cover which i thought looked cool but completely soaked my arse whenever it rained, which in South Wales is basically always. Good times.
The biker of today started out on these things like the AP50, SS50,FS1E .The rare KTM Commet Cross, Fantics , Puch Maxi GP, Malaguti and many more . Thanks for taking us back to those crazy hazy days. 👍👍👍👍
You can almost hear the piston crown glowing red hot … those 49cc’s take a beating. Never had one cos my Dad said they were too slow to be safe (his last bike was an AJS). So waited until I was 17 - bought a 1976 non runner CG125 for a tenner. Put a new rectifier & condenser in it & a tank that didn’t leak & bingo … it wasn’t much faster than a fizzer or a C90 😂
As we all get older and maybe wiser we boys (or girls) never forget when we were 16 and this door opened up to freedom. I remember watching the speedo from the school mini-bus and if it said 50mph that was the speed we dreamed of riding on a FS1-E. Good times.
2:39 Nice view of the river mole, I used to go fishing down there! Nice fizzy BTW, having said that my Honda MT5 has it beat, I get an easy 55 out of it but I admit that it has taken a lot of effort and modifications to get it to go this fast. 40 years ago it was the same thing, I had an MT5, a mate at school had a fizzy, it was a race every day going home.
Haha those were the days eh.... what mods did you make to the mt5? My dt50 did 47mph during my CBT, but then as far as I recall, it would only ever pull to 40 on a flat. Maybe it would go over a bit downhill. There was a rumour that the old DT 50s were capable of 50-55+ fully deristricted. Not something I ever tinkered with though sadly. Big regret. Was still the fastest of all the 50s round my way. Apart from a lad who went to the same college who had a Derbi Senda. That would do 50 on a flat all day out the box. But they were very pricey.
@@itzajdmting I must admit I've cheated a bit!...Its running a 66cc big bore kit although that on its own would not make all that much difference. I've modified all the ports which was pretty tricky as the bore is so small. The head has had a lot of work, it has been totally reprofiled and now has a working squish band with 0.6mm clearance. The CR is 13.5:1 (uncorrected). I've cut open the exhaust and removed the restrictions, it also runs a proper baffle cone inside the exhaust, it looks stock from the outside. I'm running fibre reeds with the reed stop bent back, the carb is up from 13mm to 18mm, it has had to be extensively re-jetted, the inlet manifold has been opened up to match the new carb. The restriction in the air filter has been removed. The standard ignition starts to misfire at around 7500 RPM, its a spare spark system which means that at 7500 RPM the CDI is sparking at 15000 RPM, I've modified the ignition trigger system so that it now fires only once per revolution, the engine runs to 9000 RPM now. The last 'big' mod that I've done is to fit an MTX80 six speed box in place of the 5 speed box. The bike is a 'sleeper', it looks immaculate but stock but goes much better than stock. I recon it can hit 60+ down hill but I've geared the bike so that it will pull 55 all day long, I don't like 'over-geared' bikes. Looking back I think that I got a bit carried away with all of this but it does make me laugh when I'm out and about on it, more so than my Triumph 1050 Speed Triple!
Great video fantastic bike ask anyone who had a fizzy if they whish they still had it i bet they would all say yes i no i do stay safe hopefully more videos 🇬🇧👍

52 = 45 in the real world. Yamaha speedos were a bit optimistic at the time. Try doing it with a sat nav and you will find that 42-43 is the top speed. If you thrash them they will do 45. Downhill, 48. I've got a fizzie, and was most disappointed when this was pointed out to me and I tested it for myself. Still, the 55 legend was good for stories of yore'...
Had a purple one in 1982,NAB 351P, god it was quick could get close to 60,decoke exhaust and piston every other week, ran on my brother's left over Motocross fuel, I was only about 5 stone ringing wet and couldn't touch the floor on it,junctions and traffic lights could only get one foot to the floor and then it was a stretch lol,so wish I still had it.
My mate had a white and red one when he was 16, I helped him rebuild it and paint it at the time in his uncles shed, we always laughed and joked at how it sounded like a wasp in a coke can
Can’t remember when I last saw a classic 2 stroke on the road. Pull up at a bike meet on this and it’ll get more attention than owt. Wish I’d have kept all my old strokers.
Ah 1976!!! I had a Fizzie and loved it, wish I'd kept it now!! Of our pack on a slight gradient the Garelli Tiger Cross was fastest. On the flat the AP50, on hills the Fizzie did well, great all rounder. Honourable mention to the Puch JPS and the Fantic Caballero!! Oh and the ss50 a real slow dog!!
The Puch Grand Prix was available in a colour scheme that looked like a packet of JPS cigarettes but the letters jumbled together were actually SDP (for Steyr-Daimler-Puch, not the political party formed several years later by among others William Rodgers who was the minister of transport at the time the 30mph restriction was placed on mopeds in 1977.)
Great video! The best scene was overtaking the Mercedes again :-) What was Fizzy's legal speed in the UK? In Germany it was limited to 40 km/h (24.85 mph). In the open 50cc class, Yamaha had the RD 50 DX (6.25 hp, 85 kph). Sales were difficult back then against the Zundapps, Hercules and Kreidlers, so all 50cc Yamaha bikes from the 70s are very, very rare in Germany today.
Up to July 1977 there was no legal restriction on the top speed of mopeds in the UK. They had to be under 50cc and have pedals by means of which they could be propelled. The FS1E would usually do about 45mph (72km/h) without modification. The one in this video is going remarkably well and sounds as though it has its original exhaust system. Mopeds registered from August 1977 had to be designed not to exceed 30mph (48km/h) but were no longer required to have pedals.
My first venture into bikes trashed the pedals with in a month fell off alot I’m now riding Harley chopper, good days though their was ten of us riding around on fizzers Suzuki ap and one poor bugger on a Honda SS 😂
Everyone used to take the piss out of my ss50 but with a c70 top end and carb none of them could keep up with it, they had no idea, it also did twice as many mpg as the 2 strokes and it never failed to start and didn’t heat sieze. My mates nan lived in hazelmere so we decided to ride our peds there, about 220 miles, if my memory serves me right it took about 12 hours to get there with at least 2 hours waiting for his fizzy to cool down. Got back a lot quicker though, his uncle felt sorry for us and loaded the bikes in his van. Really pleased I had the opportunity to have little adventures like that though.

Great bike, but wasted on some simpleton. Terrible, dangerous riding too. It's a shame the indicators don't work too. I only hope you don't have a licence and your excuse is you don't know how to ride a bike. :(
You're not showing bikers in a good way by speeding.
Any cop worth his salt would pull him over, take a selfie with the bike, and then send the rider off on his merry way.
