I always found this scene quite heartbreaking for Matoko, considering the psychological trauma she suffers from being a full body cyborg, coming across another cyborg that has the same appearance must be truly demoralising and painful. Ghost in the Shell is one of my favorite movies because of scenes like this, you can tell how a character feels without using dialogue
The look of the dog on the bridge is so haunting. Oshii always throws in animals, especially basset hounds to add emotion in situations where everyone around seems so emotionless.
I always interpreted it as possibly her seeing someone in the same body as her. In the Manga (yes, I understand it may or may not have anything to do with the movie, as the movie the show and the manga are separate) Shirow Masume mentions that her body "is deliberately designed to look like a mass production model so she won't be too conspicuous." Under it all she's state of the art, but it's made to look that way so she won't get jumped and robbed for parts. She may have seen another model.
@VMANX24 Because she is a cyborg, and in her case its not only SOME of her body thata artificial, its all of it...remember throughout the film she mentions she thinks she might NOT be real? Well, that whole scene where she sees herself is to suggest she might not be...that her body is just a shell, and her personality might as well be a program as well as a soul...its to put the viewer in doubt as to whether she is real or not.
Can someone explain to me why she sees herself in the window at 0:48, sorry if I come off as stupid it was the only thing that I could not understand in this phenomenal film :)
Heartbreakingly relevant in a world that's becoming less personal and more digitized.
This scene is perfect.
This movie is epic.
Nothing else to say.
this and the boat set up is one of the best moment in any sci fi film. that is all
One of the best animated scenes ever.

This maybe my favorite scene from anything ever. That atmosphere is both dense and powerful.

Mazen Ali haha he said he added the hounds in this film just because he likes them. That's all. Makes them more special imo.
dunno why but this always makes me teary eyed
powerful stuff

URA !!! The classic for 1000 years.
@KarpKomet Yeah, the boat scene is marvelous. Theres so much in there if one is not limited to mainstream european philosophers.
@amjadken well maybe that's because this scene is sad... or... makes you feel anguish... anyway, is the best scene in the history of anime
@ZOMGcaitie This movie is almost 10 years older. In 1995 this was the state of the art in animation.

I wish they would have used this artist, or the artist who did Innocence to do the SAC/ 2nd GIG series :/
2011 - 1995 = almost 10
hes replying to ZOMGcaitie. this movie is 10 years older than the SAC/ 2nd GIG series which was made in like 2005.
