Not in the market for a station this powerful myself but these kinds of real world comparisons are extremely valuable, especially when it comes to less known or previously less appreciated brands that could be seen as a risk. I honestly love seeing videos like this and appreciate the hell out of people who take time out of their day to make them so that others can benefit from their experience. Good on you Louis, you lot stay safe and healthy!
I love the quick, but I'm impressed with the performance of the Atten. I suppose the next thing to look at is longevity for regular use. As long as the Atten does not eat up heating elements or break down then it's solid in my opinion.
It is so sad, Hakko was great until they hired some famous designer jerkoff to redo all their products look and feel and trashed absolutely EVERYTHING. Then When everyone complained, instead of taking the feedback, corporate doubled down on their retardation, and their marketshare has been slipping ever since. I don't know anyone who buys Hakko products anymore, when they used to be the industry standard. The FX-888 was one of the best soldering stations ever made, and it did everything it needed to do: had a knob to change the temperature and a light to tell you when it was on.
Yeah. When I got that email in 2017 from the marketing wank saying I was doing a disservice to my audience by not showing them the FR-810 I knew it was over. That was a relationship I had to start mourning, a company that would say something that ballsy about a piece of equipment that bad was a company that lost any hope of producing good products again.
@@rossmanngroup Marketing wankery is like rust on a car. If you don't stay on top of it, the next thing you know it's completely taken over and the bottom has dropped out, and the only way to fix it is with a major overhaul or trashing it and starting over.
SuperAWaC Hakko who ???. I think I remember that name long ago ancient history used to make a good product but aren’t they out of business now haven’t seen one I bought one in years. They became like Kodak film and Polaroid LOL 😂
Thanks, I'm not crazy, I read a lot of peoples saying they prefer the FX-888D over the FX-888 and I thought the FX-888 was better (in usability). Anyway, this comment was about (I don't remember if this is Louis or Dave John, but I think this is Dave) the fact the FX-888 was an old technology soldier iron (my memory suck but TLDR it was about the heating element core) and there are (for about the same price) better than the FX-888. As a noob in electronic, I'm still wayyyyyyyy happy to have the FX-888 VS the cheap one-temperature soldering iron. (it heat really fast as well!)
Why does this happen to everything? Reminds me of how Craftsman went to total shit.
If, as a hobbyist, you can get an old Hakko soldering station then you're golden
I imported four pairs of the very fine Hakko tweezers many years ago after your video on tooling back then. They are still superb. Bought four to have backups...still on the first pair! Thank you for recommending them all those years ago.
Im really glad you still do these types of vids dude, even though the other types get literally 4 times the views (which are highly necessary imo) Im glad you still do these
I had smartened up and looked for recommendations for a good hot air stations. I found your shootout for these two air stations. I watch this 2 or 3 times and in the beginning of July 2020 ordered a Atten from your company as I did not want to get stuck with a knockoff. I recieved it at the end of July and started to play with the Atten and I just totally love this product. I don't know how to thank you for your video. I would tell anyone that asked buy the Atten the price is good and the product works the way it should! thank you again! *** Make sure you buy the bent nozzles!! You will not find them anywhere! ****
I bought the atten a year and a half ago from Louis. It works great. The heating element went out last month and I emailed his support, and they sent me a replacement element within the week! Great service, would recommend. Much better than the cheap $100 Amazon stations.
Thanks, Louis. I like the functionality of the Atten. I guess what matters now is how dependable it is.
Will definitely look at this one day if I find myself needing to upgrade. For now the basic Quick 857DW+ is working nicely. No settings storage, just two knobs, and changing nozzles requires a screwdriver, but it gets hot pretty quickly, cools down when the handle is put into its holder and does the job. Plus it was less than half the price of the 861DW.
You should also do a teardown of the Atten. Or convince Dave to do one. Hopefully they at least trim the pins.
I think I'm gonna have to invest in one of these once I get into heavier soldering jobs. Always learning something from your content. Keep it up man!
Excellent comparison. Long term subscriber here. Stumbled into your videos years ago out of curiosity more than anything. Stayed for the small business and right to repair content (and cats). Now I'm entertaining making the jump from through hole circuit boards (all I've ever known) to repairing surface mount stuff. I have a single IC to replace and I'm either buying a station from you or driving the board from California to Austin and paying you guys to do it. 😀
I really appreciate how obviously unbiased the comparison was. Absolutely clear that this really was your first time trying the Atten out and that you had no idea going in what the result would be.
the comparison IS
not
the comparison was.
NOTE THAT THE COMPARISON CONTINUES TO EXIST TO THIS PRESENT DAY

Hey Louis! Greetings from the UK. Thank you for your take on both stations. I've just ordered the Quick. It'll be here Friday from Amazon so looking forward to using it. Happy New year to you my friend. Hopefully 2021 is better than 2020. Stay safe and well...
This is so out of my wheel house, but I really appreciate the content and style of presentation here.
I'm a social worker, but i'd like to learn more about this field - you've got me intrigued.
You must start with me, for the basic b4 go to louise
Great Video! It's great to see you have been able to establish a relationship with a new hot air station. I hope they would allow you be an authorized vendor of them instead of just a reseller.
I picked up the Quick on your recommendation - I don't feel bad about it, just happy to see that the market is shifting into more affordable alternatives. As many of the others have mentioned, longevity is key here and time will tell if the 50-100 dollars is the difference between a 3 year, or a 10 year product.
The Atten is a great unit. Bought one from Rossmann Group. Please keep in mind if you hold the button, it turns off the heating element. You'll still be able to raise and lower the temp and speed, but no heat will come out. IT IS NOT BROKEN!!! I thought my heating element had failed, but it's just that button on the handpiece. Press and hold to switch between HOT and COLD.
Business to customer relations are so important in todays world. Just an example. I contacted a vape shop that I never bought from before to inquire about spare parts, their customer service rep asked to see if they have it, they didn't but had the bit laying around that I need from doing repairs in their shop, They next day posted that bit to me free of charge. and to this day is the only shop I buy vape stuff from. With that relation between you and Quick the Atten is now In my amazon basket.
Thanks Louis
Whew, just picked up a quick from tequipment 3 days ago. Glad this didn't say one was far and above the other. Always good to have competition though! Thanks for the review.
I seem to remember you not liking the oddly shaped top on the quick either, the atten has a top that's perfect for stacking other shit on.
They might do it intentionally to stop shit getting stacked on top. Less chance of cocked up airflow, and heavy and hot other things further cocking things up lol
@@southerncharity7928 that might be true.
The correct word is ' items ' not ' shit '

As a new user of the Atten ST-862D I can use it right out of the box (it wasn't locked like yours). Very impressive hot air station (I am new to hot air soldering) and it is so quiet.
I was looking for a hot air station. I left with life long words of wisdom. I am now a subscriber. Word
Man you are a saviour, I was looking for a decent and affordable hot air station for a while and after seeing this review I'm most likely going with the Atten. Would you consider doing a long term review with the Atten as your main station since you already used the quick for quite a while and proved it's longevity. Thanks again.
Thank you for the advice at the end of the video Louis.
Enjoyed this very much. Please keep these up. I've had mixed reviews on Weller. High prices, low expectations. Haven't tried Quick or Atten, yet. This helps.
Ordered my first ever hot air station from Amazon which was a Yihua... which self destructed the first time I turned the hot air on (went bright orange it got soo hot before tripping the breakers). That got sent back. Then got an Atten and that was weaker than a limp noodle. That went back too.
Then I got my Quick 861DW. Still using it to this day. Lovely bit of kit. I really should get a bunch of spares in while they are still available.
I love my at-sa-50 :) it's my favorite soldering iron so far (I don't have enough money for a station and I just solder as a hobby),
nice to see that they're vfm with other models too.
19:35 - "Cool little feature!" Good one, Rossmann. Ha!
Hi Louis, I don't do any board work but really enjoy watching you do them. Love you honestly with your opinions. Stay Safe my Friend.
The Atten is my Christmas
Toy for 2020.... alongside some tool selections and AmTech items from your online store...
I'm one of those weirdos who really appreciate your educational videos. Very insightful. Thank you.
This is why I build my own soldering and desoldering equipment. The interface is exactly what I want and if I have a complaint to tell the manufacturer I just argue with myself for a couple minutes.
That's cool, do you have links for info on your projects?
Gordon Chin yes, I have a video on my digital soldering station, czcams.com/video/DbGjKTPVZPk/video.html and I’m filming the video on my newly completed desoldering station this weekend.
michel777ification I mean he didn’t self advertise until someone asked
@michel777ification You can build shit and get a million subscribers as well if you work hard at it and make something that people want to see.
@@jacobshobe771 Wrong . He did self advertise when he said he built his own station, its about the same as click bait , just looking for someone to ask questions , then he adds a link to his youtube video
Just got the ATTEN model delivered and I already tested it with an SMD component. Thanks for your recommendation on the bent nozzle as well. It's pretty good for the price!
T least you have been paying ATTENtion to detail and can write ATTEN correctly -
Whereas the uneducated ZOMBIE people write Atten - which is incorrect,
All CORPORATE legal names are always in the ALL CAPS iteration
The ZOMBIES have eyes but they cannot see - ears and cannot hear
i appreciate the life lessons that you squeeze into these videos. you are a great dude
Hey Louis, thank you for the honest review. I've been searching for a new station for a while and I know I can trust your review. I was going to get a Quick but I think I'll save a few pounds and get myself an Atten ;) keep up the great work! #StaySafe
How is the performance till now? I am about to buy.
It was good?
As of today, yes Atten has bent nozzles. At AliExpress, they call it _"ATTEN ST-862D 45 Degree Bent Curved Nozzle"._ The angle is 45deg. and you can select from three different diameters, the same you mentioned they've made for you: 6.4mm, 8.7mm and 12.7mm. It costs 8 dollars USD. Btw, the business dynamic you depict at the end is so true! It's like a couple: the moment one loses respect for the other, taking him/her for granted, the relation goes down the drain and eventually to a divorce.
I know this is an old video, but I just bought an Atten. It was not locked out of the box for me, and I was able to purchase it with 7 nozzles including 3 bent nozzles, and an adaptor for 850 style nozzles. All for around $193 shipped from HK.
Keep it up, Louis. Stay safe during these horrible times.
I was stunned to hear that they didn't have bent-nozzles already. That's mind-boggling. I'd have thought any hot-air station would offer that.
Still like em.
Thanks for the review.
looks like they have them its on the website already..
Ive been a subscriber to Louis since 25k subs, he is always no bullshit, and gives the technicals. Look at the guys shirt, he's all about his work.
My cars electronics have been breaking steadily as the damn thing gets older, I ripped mine apart recently to find out what one of those issues was. It was a circuit board that I guess Ford doesn't manufacture anymore so I had to repair it instead. Brought out the hakko 951 and resoldered all the joints, it works again!
The Atten or Quick is next on my buy list.
For the first video i saw, i was just looking for some electronics stuff, but definitely the philosophy was the thing that made me stay
Thanks for sharing
lovely little business advice that can transfer over to everything in life, awesome!
HI Louis, I have seen some sellers selling this BST-863 - it is rated at 1200w and comes in a bit cheaper than the Atten and apparently has a reasonable build quality as well compared to these.
It might be worth you also checking that one out
The review was great, but the life advice in the last five minutes is the best part
I don't think I will ever need anything quite like this for the odd jobs I do but it's tempting nonetheless - thanks for the review. They are on sale in the Netherlands via Atten with shipment to the UK for around 215 Euros - early Christmas present to myself maybe ;) :D
I just saw a video from the company and YES you can pick up the nozzle and it turns on automatically... The guy guy in the video did not show in detail how to do it though.... Keep up the GREAT vids Mon Ami.... I watch regular ................
Louis nice humming of Christmas music. The best time of year.
You looked at Metcal yet? They use an RF heating curie point tip that is absolutely amazing. They also have the heated tweezers.
For me OKI METCAL HCT-900-21 230v EU Version (HCT-900-11 115v) is what I use with analogue control and parts are still available considering the unit is old. Heat is very constant and the handle by far the smallest and ergonomic. However only downside Metcal is you have to manually turn down temp when resting on stand. 😊👍
Life lesson: when your girl asks for a cookie, give her that cookie.
You may need to measure the outer diameter to find specific ones, but the nice thing is you can use the universal nozzles that have an adjustable clamp to fit a range. I'd guess once you got them sized, a bit of high temp thread lock would keep them from changing adjustment. The sets of those are suitable cheap off the same sites that sell the 862D.It looked like there were some sort of indents on the outer diameter of the 862, I wonder if they did that specifically to avoid some sort of patent Quick might have. It might be possible to undo that and then use the Quick nozzles. Considering the under $200 price of the Atten. 5 minutes with a Dremel or drill to be able to use the easily available Quick nozzles would be totally worth the savings. It's not like you're ever going to service the thing anyway.
Making this comment as a paceholder. When I get home I'm gonna see what model I have. I bought some cheap $68 hot air station that had an attached soldering iron. This thing has worked AMAZINGLY I bought it a Fry's of all places. Actual knobs for air and temp, as well as on the iron. Each has its own display for temp. It stays where I set it every time. That thing has been transported to jobs. slammed around in my trunk for months. I've been using it for years. Will update later.
love from Tunisia , stay safe and healthy louis there are few people like you .
Quick is a kick ass, I’ve been using it for a few years and very happy with it
@Louis Rossmann, you should have a look at the Kaisi 901DW
It seems like what you are looking for in a hot air station, it has physical rotating knobs for temp and airflow and is 1000watt Quick and Atten lookalike and seems to use Quick style tips and have 4 memory banks
Had to borrow a HaKo from adjacent dept at uni. took an 1.5 hours to read and understand the manual to get it set up, at which point i needed to shut it all down to cool off before I went home.
Take it apart ! Show us a peek inside ! Would like to see how it's put together. Cheers.
You can see the inside on the Atten website but still gonna need louis's input. If he's calm must be alright but if he turns into a rabid dog you've been warned.
What I am doing with my life? I just watched 40 minutes comparison of product which I will never use in my life :-D Well played Louis. Stay safe
you never know can happen one day ,all technician start with cheaper tool now day use the costly tools
Thoughts on the lock feature. It seems to me that the lock feature functions perfectly. It’s designed to prevent kids from turning it on, mashing all the buttons and burning themselves. If I were in the market for such a feature I would want to know that unlocking it isn’t intuitive.
Just got an St-862d and wanted to point out that straight out of the box it did not have lock engaged. Appears that it can be activated if you want it, but is off by default on mine at least.
Hey Louis.thanks for the review. had just been setting up to purchase that same hot air. what are your thoughts on the Atten ST-965 soldering iron
Hey Louis, I was a customer a couple years ago, just wanted to thank you man. I have a Macbook Pro Retina early 2015 edition. I was wondering whats the cost to upgrade the RAM on it from 8GB to 16GB?
Have you noticed there are 2 straight nozzles and 2 spiraled nozzles in the box?
"The hot air rework station with 4Pcs nozzles which are straight air and spiral air optional. Protect the IC chip. 5mm 8mm straight air nozzles.
8mm 10mm spiral air nozzles."
Would be interested if you can compare the straight 8mm and the spiraled 8mm and see if there is any difference.
Hi Louis, I am a Hot Air newbie owning a Quick 861dw now. Although my first experience went quite well with soldering some smt parts using 300C and airflow set to 20, I would like to know if you have some basic recommendations for temp/airflow settings for the Quick covering different scenarios, eg. soldering (paste with lead), de-soldering etc. In general, would you prefer to use higher temperature and try to (de-)solder as quick as possible, or take some more seconds with less temp?
Louis wearing his mask while doing a video in supper of Jessa... RESPECT!
Did you try unplugging it then charging the customer $800? Usually works for Apple
Glad I'm not the only one humming Christmas songs way out of season... 😹
Just ordered one through Louis' store! And, it comes shipped with bent nozzles.
How are you liking it so far?
this episode reminds of one of the episodes of "Junk Wars" on Discovery :)
28:26 - Wonderland?! Louis, its April!
It's the most recognisable piece of music from the movie Home Alone.. ;)
Hi Louis, Great review and straight to the point, Ive always steared away from Atten but that station looks pretty cool. One thing though I use the Quick 861DW, Ive had it for a couple of years now and always seemed to do the job but recently i noticed things were taking a little too long to remove from boards, so i read the destructables and found i could calibrate the quick. after testing the temp with a heat probe at 300 (low) it only gave out 267 degrees C and High 500 Degrees it gave out 468 degrees. so after calibration (in the manual :-) it now gives out the correct temps again.. is yours calibrated correctly?.... just a thought. keep up the great work and STAY SAFE
thanks for your support quick ,
REWRITTEN: FORMATTED CORRECTED TEXT
I found that I could calibrate the QUICK.
After testing the temp with a heat probe at 300 (low) it only produced
267 degrees C and High 500 Degrees it produced 468 Degrees.
So after calibration ( described in the manual ) it now produces the
correct temperature again.
I just ordered mine. Excited af.
please open it up and compare it to the quick, thanks for the review !
Hi Louis
Please test the Atten ST-862D temperature accuracy/stability compared to the Quick and see if the temperature can be calibrated (like the Quick can be).
Also if you feel like it, take the case off of both and compare.
Thanks Louis.
The intro... I fell out my chair laughing! And I don't think I'ma be OK after this...😵💫
When I get enough I am definitely going to buy my atten from you Ross 👌🏾
Delivered by next week, looking forward to it! :)
I look forward to the video about the internals, the box looks nice on the outside, but if it's a chinesium ratsnest on the inside that would be a disappointment..
I bought a "Leny" 851D, and it's pretty much breadboard inside.. I like the interface on it, and they have a 20V power supply (0.1V increment) and it can measure voltage as well.. all handy functions.. just wish both of the power supply to that part of it died on both of them.. on one of them it went up in a cloud of magic smoke on first power-up.. The rest of it still works so it does what I need.
You should also measure the actual temperature calibration between them!
I'm an amateur electronics buff just learning at this stuff, but I got into hot air guns recently thanks to Louis. I always thought irons were the only way to work with solder, until I tried working on more complex stuff like motherboards with vias, SMDs, and large solder joints. I found out quickly that irons are almost useless for that work. I started watching Louis's repair videos with hot air stations, and my understanding of how to work with solder was revolutionized.
form follows function.... its a mantra that has been lost in the 21st century - glitz and flashy lights seem to rule over usability consistency and reliably now... your spot on... a rotary switch would make it even better
After watching a video on Atten's site, that Hot Air Station can be set to "auto on" at pickup also, maybe a safety feature not to auto on when shipped?
I guess the manual would say that but who reads manuals....lol
I don't like to read the manual either, but I've been using this thing for 6 months and I just learned that a long-press will enable cold air. haha.
You can buy from a rainforest website 7, 9 or 13mm 45deg nozzles for the atten.
Louis you could just make a sleeve for the 862 nozzles to be interchangeable
You have to love the fact they called it the 862. eight six TWO. One more betterer!
I would love to see the insides, if the MCU is in any way hackable like with the TS100 the community will have a better firmware with actual usability for it in no time.
Those christmas trees in the office are really getting to you, Louis.
Thank you for these comparison videos.
Great advice on customer relations and business ethics!!!!!!
Louis I just looked and what great buy on the Atten ST-862D
hi Louis happy new year, your videos are great and are really helping me. I have just bought the atten based on your review. What's a rough temp i can use to reflow chips? thanks
looks like the rubber tubing are different materials, I wonder if it's made of cheap stuff that will crumble in a year. Also wonder if the materials are cheaper, like it has worse heat management or the internals are cheaper.
Hey man what do you think of soldering tweezers or even the micro versions of them do you reckon it would be still necessary if you had a hot air rework station ?
i made my own bent nozzles for my quick 861dw in my bench vise cause they where sold out of the ones already bent.
Where can you buy heating elements? I cant find them, not even on Attens website. Would we have to buy the quick replacement?
@Louis Rossmann Did you ever create the teardown video? Curious if this is a safe device and has good quality components?
perfect business advice at end of video. couldnt agree with you more
Perfect points made.
