Studio Introduction video: • Smart Studio - Introdu...
This video shows the construction process from the beginning to the end of Smart Studio in Sutton, London.
This video highlights the processes and methods I personally decided to undertake for the construction of my own personal home studio. This is not a go-to guide for studio building - it is merely an example of my first studio build executed within a limited budget & availability of space. Being a home studio, this construct is 100% fit for purpose. However the location & scale of your project will determine the appropriate/legal methods to be undertaken for constructing & soundproofing a recording studio.
I get a lot of people asking about cost..it's just a hard one to answer is all, because anyone who has ever built something like this will tell you that you never really stop spending on it. Given the awkward shape and size of mine, ive spent quite a bit extra on acoustic treatment over the past year or so. However the core build cost me somewhere between £10,000 & £13,000. Had i paid a company to build the exact same thing, you'd be looking in the ball-park of £30,000+.

• Smart | Studio - How t...
Smart | Studio is made up of two rooms: one for monitoring, one for live sound. The live sound room is a room-within-a-room, the monitoring room is not. For the most effective soundproofing, a room-within-a-room structure is ALWAYS recommended for maximised* soundproofing. However, high-end soundproofing can STILL be achieved by safely applying as much mass as possible to existing surfaces, which was what I did with the monitoring room as losing space was not really an option. Preliminary soundproofing results can be seen/heard HERE: • Smart | Studio - How t... - a more "final" soundproofing test video will follow shortly! And I assure you, the results are quite astonishing!

Wow, 125 thousand views... incredibly grateful for everyone's lovely comments, thank you. I am also grateful for the critiques, and I would like to address as many as I can all at one go instead of just ploughing through them individually!
As a first studio build, I went in blind. I had a very small space & budget to work with, but it was always quite clear in my head what I wanted - two rooms, one small one for me to do some writing, and another slightly larger room for me to run my teaching business and close mic some instruments (guitar amps, percussion etc) Given the location of the studio, it was NEVER going to be a competitive studio from the get-go. I just wanted a larger, more "soundproofed" room than the smaller room so I could teach drums in peace & not disturb my neighbours (which has worked, by the way), and a smaller "less-soundproofed" room so I can sit and write ("less-soundproofed" primarily because I had an even smaller space to work with...not because I prefer the sound of a "less-soundproofed" room!) I have never really had a huge amount of interest in recording bands. And whats more, what band wants to record in a tiny studio at the bottom of someones garden in the suburbs?! More to the point.. the acoustics were never a particularly important aspect of my construction design because everything was intended to be recorded at close proximity (I do quite a lot of ADR & voiceover recording), so I was just going to make the recording space as dead as possible. Which it is. (NB: video doesn't show heavy duty bass traps and large rugs which have been added over the last year or so) I had very little space to play with, so a room sound was always out of the question. I understand on the surface that having put this video out, and no one out there knows what I know, it DOES look like I am promoting a tiny square recording studio for bands, complete with irreparable room modes. But I'm not. I'm literally just showing you what I built to suit my own needs, and the steps that I took to achieve this. If I were to build a single-room mastering studio or large tracking room, I would have attenuated the shape of the room & left the height as it was...but my studio is right under a bunch of trees... in England. So with regards to the issue of rainwater, i'm sure you can imagine the problems that it proposed! And guess what, I don't hear it now! :D So to everyone saying that in order to correct this, i'm going to need to "tear it down and start again"... No. it works perfectly for what I need. It's not a competitive mixing & mastering suite in Central London. It's a tiny backyard studio in the sticks of South London that does what I need it to do.
I truly appreciate everyone's kind words & I really hope this video can be an inspiration to people out there wanting to do the same thing.
Do u mind me asking how much it cost how long was the build-up process? Great work
Hi Bme Productions, the cost was around the £13,000 GBP mark. In terms of construction time, it took a couple of weeks to get the concrete floor laid, timber structure assembled & roofing secured - I had quite a lot of help with that. Everything else took the better part of a year purely because I was working a full-time job & I was making the sand panels myself (about 100 in total). With all hands on deck, you could probably get this same unit built in 4-5 weeks, allowing for time-consuming elements like plastering and painting. But it would cost 3 or 4 times the price. If you have a job & can only work on something like this intermittently, it can take a very long time. The build easily saw me through 2 winters!
@@smartstudio2615 awesome job my goal is to buy land build a house for my baby girl and of course daddy's play room (personal home studio) is my only goal in life right now thanks for the inspiration. Live, love and laugh. Peace
I love this video and by the way Im only 11 but i love hip hop and Im trying to find a studio will accept me but i will try see some so i can make a Hip hop Carrer (so i dont know how to spell lol)
thats my dream :) maybe in future but how much roughly cost ? and finance avaliable for this project ? thanks
This is my dream. A room where I can’t hear anything other than what I want and where no one can hear me. Alone and able to express myself freely.
I feel you on a deep level. Im stuck in an apartment with 2 roommates.
Me too.

What I always miss about these videos are the actual outside noise level test with someone beating the drums aggressively. Few are the ones were you can tell how good the isolation works. Good video though!
Great video, I like that you compressed the whole process in to just six minutes. I find many youtubers that ramble about with background and anectodes for five minutes before getting to the point. That’s nice when you have time to waste but this was very useful and straight to the point.
Saddens me that I can't just get up and go outside and do this after watching this and gaining so much motivation. The city life environment really sucks. Nothing but concrete and high rises everywhere. Hardly any land to start from the ground up and the available land is ridiculously expensive with tons of restrictions. They hate housing anything remotely close to a studio down here in south florida. I need to get out of here and move to the country side ugh! Great work, excuse my rant.
One of the Best Ideas of SoundProofing is "SoundProof Curtains" it actually Block outside Noise coming from Windows. Check Here: livesoundproof.com/best-soundproof-curtains/
I'm planning to live in Brooklyn after college, but I think I'll save up for some very cheap land/house in Connecticut, so it's like an hour away from me.
Absolutely fantastic. Great job. I hope you enjoy it for a long time.
Thankyou for the kind words! The feeling is certainly reciprocated... phenomenal results with your studio!
That is some serious soundproofing right there
Looks amazing. Exactly what I'm hoping to build (or covert an outbuilding) in the next year or so.
how is it coming?
it would be cool to see/hear a demo video of someone playing drums or electric guitar with the camera outside. I am curious to hear how soundproof this is
Great job, and a real coup to have something like this at home in London!
When i win the lotto, this is my dream to build my own studio, great seeing the build, a lot more to it than i imagined
Absoliutely love it, i am planning to build my own so i can sing out at any time without disturbing folk, im thinking a 12 x 10 ft space would do for me. i hope you have a great 2018, superb
This is a brilliant video! I will need to learn how to do this myself! To have a studio like this is the dream!
Wow! Looks amazing!
Adding layer of drywall/plaster on outside layer of second wall system worsens STC rating of the wall system. Better just to have double drywall on outside. Research STC ratings and various wall systems for highest ratings.
Incredibly expensive build. Looks great though.
Very nice job. I like the light accents around the building
LOOKS AMAZING ! I will be looking to do something like this at my next house.
congrats nice work i cant wait tell i have mine we like in a mobile home grrrrr
Looks Beautiful 👍🎶
So so awesome! I hope to build my own someday and seeing the quality you got on this home DIY project is super inspiring. This is so legit! I would love to hear those drums in that room!
Cool studio. Cool song!
fantastic job there !!
Astonishing!
great work
I'd love to have that in my garden. I just use a spare bedroom or hire rooms for bands.
this is awesome man!!!
This video shows me everything I did wrong. , Nice job :)
Amazing, hope you can pick it up if you ever move!
Glad it's working for you. But... this doesn't seem like a model to follow for choosing construction materials if someone has the luxury of new construction and is after excellent soundproofing. For soundproofing new construction I would not consider anything but cement walls.
I wonder if there's something ... far simpler than this; a great studio which doesn't need these many details for it to work.
@@ColtraneTaylor Think it doesn't get any more simpler than this.
@jamesmelton...i am considering converting my attached brick garage to a home cinema/TV room. What would you recommend for sound proofing. It doesn't have to be the greatest but just want to be able to crank up the volume without annoying the rest of the household. The room is 15'x9' with a 8' ceiling. It's basically a bare block garage at the moment. I haven't decided a budget yet but it will be fairly small, around €5000-€8000!!
Beautiful.
Awesome job!
amazing! Thanks for sharing. great attention to detail!
This is incredible. Job well done. Hope I could do that one day.
super cool!
Very nice!
Great work!
Amazing, great great job
Brilliant
who ever reading this and if you are dreaming to have a own Studio
Just Always Pray and Trust the Process of our Lord and Promise at the right moment you have this ❤️🙏☝️
Great video! Congratulations.
Next time tape and join the soundpanels with plasterers scrim tape and jointing compound . That way it will not crack over time and compromise the soundproofing.
Nice Job.
Great job.
Amazing!
amazing, looks dope
Cute!🧡🧡🧡
Very Nice Studios
#truesadhnaknowledge
Wow. I wish i had the know how to do something like that. All I have in Jason's Dollar Tree Studio is a bunch of guitars and a freaking Tasman DP-008EX in the corner😞
This was dope!!!
Hey! I'm curious how much you spent on materials/ etc. for your studio build. I am going to be building a studio in my backyard. Thanks!
I'm currently undergoing this project in building a studio. My calculations have hit the area of £1500. It's absolutely doable!
@@bassinblue only 1500? Looks like at least 5000 to me
@@RiffLair Yup! Easy. My guess is closer to 7500
@@bassinblue dude, 1500 wont even cover the floor! lol
id say if you dont have at least 10k, dont start. youll end up cutting corners and sacrificing crucial elements of a studio due to budget. not ideal.
I'm building a live room and booth in my basement that will be around $13,000 when all done. Lumber was $1500, insulation is around $3000, drywall and flooring are $6000, wall treatment and trim is another $2000
Amazing
nice work!
I love it :) Exceptional Job (Y)
all i can think about is the rooms and how incorrect they are to get the most out of instruments and speakers. square tracking room will have nothing but problems and a small control room wont support the low end. at least in theory. i hope it works out for what you're doing though
Hi Nik, Quite right there, not an ideal shape sonically but nothing a keen ear and a bit of acoustic treatment couldnt sort out! Very ideal for what i need as a composer & boths rooms look/sound very different now. This video was made with the only photos i had to hand at the end of the construction process at the time. A good year and half ago now! Will keep this channel posted with a more up-to-date representation of the studio. thankyou for commenting!
Nik Gienger I was originally thinking something similar. I think he's got it sorted, now.
Nik Gienger . . . I have to agree with you Nik.
Nik Gienger still better than no studio.
Id actually take a lightly treated bedroom or living room than this.
Wow 125 views congratulations bro
Very interesting. Have you ever measured the noise reduction in dB(A)?
Hi Leon...Noise reduction is huge. I can record drums at 2am without disturbing my neighbours.
I will upload a results video in the new year with a comprehensive dB reading, but there is a preliminary results video on my channel that shows the results of my monitoring room about 6 months before i'd even green-glued and plasterboarded!
What did it cost?
sick!
Was hoping to see how ac was installed window unit, venting
....great job though!
Epic 😎🔥
Thanks
Wondering....if screws transmit sound vibrations, couldn’t just use 5 screws then remove them once the green glue sets?
just can’t imagine getting a good drum recording in a space so small. but it’s a really cool build
And you were able to get permits to build that? Did you have to call it a shed? Or maybe a party room or a garage? How did it affect your property taxes?
Great!
Awesome build! What is the “soundproofing boards” you are referring to? Where can I buy it or who makes it?
i want to build something like this in my new house but i dont know where to get started lol
Hey great Video, and great job ! i would love to try and build a studio like this, how long and how much did it cost you, sorry to be so blunt lol
Hey, I'm going to do something similar...but how much $$ for this ?
Thats nice
What was the cost? If you don't mind me asking
Im doing the same thing and it costs around 5 thousand dollars, 6
What's that about 14-15.000$ in materials, property line offsets dictate the size of your studio,in that small backyard, looks good
wow.... awesome
🎈 Happy Birthday!

how much did the build cost?
I'd say the shed alone considering cement, lumber, drywall and parts would probably have costed them around $1,500 USD. They probably spent around (or a little less than) twice that ($3,000). It's not too expensive, but definitely not inexpensive either. Nothing a regular class worker can't invest in within about a year or two. I really want to do this lol.
@@gabriel99thomasImpossible. This would have cost 15k. Do you see the level of detail they went with the soundproofing. The window alone would cost at least 500. Look up everything they did and price it. There is no way on earth that it would ever come close to a little less than 3000. If they did this under 10-15k, by themselves of course (if they hired builders than you can almost double that for labor. I just finished a studio build and it cost 4k excluding builders fee, and it is nowhere near the level of detail that these guys went to. I have insulation, acoustic plasterboard, concrete base, metal roof, etc. I dont have acoustic windows, tecsound, floating floor, soundproof board, etc,.
Everything was price checked to the manufacturer aswel.
Kemaro how do you find the level of soundproofing?
I’m about to start a build but I am considering 1 layer room with good insulation etc as a posed to a room in side a room. But I’m worried about the level of sound print will provide. But I don’t play drums it will just be for music production. I’m not sure I have the budget for the 2 rooms
wont the low frequency trafel through the floor to the booth and in to the mic or when someone walk on the floor board
What's the size of the recording room?
Can I get the tabs for the song?
What do you mean by the core build? (Not including studio gear?) 13k cool. DYI What's the square footage also?
I didn't notice the installation of heating / air conditioning. How did you solve this?
how much did all this cost rufly to build,
Hi
Have you had any issues with your concrete slab building it on top of rubble ?? I have just started my studio build , I have broken up bricks for my hardcore into small pieces and about to get my slab poured but I’m now panicking as everyone is telling me I should be using mot sub base. I’m concerned It may crack over time 🤦🏻♂️
Excellent Job...Now make some great music!
Steven Walker Thankyou Steven!
Any sample I can hear?
Do you have a rough cost for this build?? Looking to build something similar!
What was the cost to build this?
what was the final internal height measure ?
Looks good but come summertime and a few several people in the studio, it just gets too damn hot!!! I made the same mistake when I built my studio, in the end gave up and installed a AC unit and it’s so much better and best of all, no sound leakage
Are you in the U.K.?
@@ourclarioncall yes I am in the uk 🇬🇧 👍
@@Simon_Stewart cool 😎
Yeah, I’ve watched loads of videos and ventilation is one of the main things that stands out as a key aspect to think about.
So before you got AC unit did you have an sort of ventilation system ? Or just a case of open a door or window when need be?
Does your AC unit pull in fresh air aswell as cooling the air?
Sorry I’m clueless 😊
Any videos of your build?
What is the dimension?
Aah I see you made the mistake I made. Placing walls on top of the floor. In my case even with an exterior wall over hanging the edge of the floor water still got up in there and after several years rotted my floor out. Would have been better if I had placed the walls directly to the slab
Is the google sketch up project available for download, it’s incredible similar to what I’m looking to build and if the project has precise dimensions I’d love to download it!
What’s the total sqm of the floor space?
also curious on this!
How did you run the cables from room to room being sound proof?
Wall puddy around the openings works wonders for this
how much did this all cost ?
Would you say this is fully soundproofed or more of a reduction of sound? I plan on building a large double room studio with a third control room in between in my garden. I've looked into companies that build them for you and all the advice seems to be you must have a room inside a room.Looks great, im just wondering if it would still be appropriate for constant use in a residential area?
ah spoke too soon! just got to the room within a room part!
Hi! do you have weird bass resonances when playing drums or bass in the live room?
How much did u spent
