@deanjames2476 Yeah just like old sods in society. Where did alot of them learn a benefits culture to sit on the dole? The old folk. In general most people try and work and get on in life. Those with anything about them do. My kids have a great work ethic and will do well on their own volition and will not be serving in the FN military. Old codgers can judge what they like as well. Today is a different ball game. The UK cost of living is insane, created by the Tories, profiteering off the back of manufactured global instability. The Tories take almost all of the low to mid level skilled workers pay every month. People don't get fun extras like holidays and as a homeowner myself I can also see, it has been made extremely difficult for folk to try and own their homes now as well. How can kids save for a future when almost every last penny is taken? All issues that the boomers and older generations never faced, yet sit back in judgement, whilst the young who do work today pay almost everything from their pay packet for your kind to sit and judge on the take. Barely getting by as well. No extras at all, no fun days our for family, just total grind. Some kids see that and don't see any benefit to themselves. The government has to make it pay to work. Some working people work full time and barely make more than they woykd on benefits. There is something very wronf in that. Its by design and to keep folk down. Stop judging and try actually understanding the issues.

The National Service does not work very well in Finland.
Male Finns are expected to carry out a duration in the military that can last for 6 months to on year.
Female Finns are totally voluntary. A big discussion started a few years back where the National Anti-Discrimination Office leader publicly stated she (a useless politician) was opposed to women also having to do national service, especially because she was against her daughter having to go to the army.
The people who do their service state that the boredom is awful, and they are constantly waiting for some activity. The regular army who are tasked with training those who appear for their service also find the task boring and they are relatively uninterested in actually carrying out the tasks.
An example of this is the lack of actual proper equipment. For example, a person measuring 2.14 metres tall stood at the clothing and bedding service point. He eas towering above the hole in the wall and was given clothing and bedding which when he put on he found it was several sizes too small. When he went back to the hole in the wall, the guy giving oit the stuff looked up at him and said "Why didn't you tell me you are above average size?" The guy also had to run around the forest in Wellington Boots, which are standard military issue (have you tried running in Wellington Boots? His boots were 3 sizes too small because they did not have his size in boots. Also, the are not given waterproof sleeping bags, instead they are given old blankets, and his blanket was too small which meant either his uor lower half was cold.
Persons who refuse their national service, which is nowadays a very high percentage and perfectly acceptable in today's society in Finland (not before), are then given one year of public service in the form of, e.g. hospital duties, university duties, etc. At first, one thinks this is good retribution, however, these people receive 'cigarette money" as it is termed in Finkand, i.e. peanuts, which means hospitals, universities, etc. get bery cheap labour for a year, and then new people for the consecutive years, which results in a seriously distorted job market.
Equally, young men who serve for, e.g. one year, are paid peanuts and pay no taxes, whereas if they were in the normal job market being paid normal pay and paying taxes and using market services, etc. the result on the economy is positive.
National Service may have been am option in the pre 1970s, but nowadays it is outdated, negative to the economy, mentsl illness creating, discriminatory (women will also have to serve?), and of little interest to regular army personnel who would be tasked with training the NS personnel.

In the 50's Judges gave criminals a choice, either join one of the 3 services or go to jail, in 83 we were offered the choice of conscripts, we absolutely rejected this idea, and why should the armed forces be saddled with the upbringing of unruly kids who have no respect for authority or anyone other than themselves, or the dregs of society. It is not the Armed forces responsibility to raise Unruly kids because the parents can not and have failed or even criminals, we are a Voluteer force and one volunteer is much better than 10 pressed men, and would any of you walk into a hostile zone with a conscript of this nature not knowing if he/she will stand with you or tuck tail and run?? And a Reminder we went almost 8000 miles(Falklands) and 900 mostly conscripts surrendered to 90 of our Para's. We only want people who WANT to serve and be part of our forces, That's what makes us one of the best respected forces on this planet. And successive governments have totally disrespected exactly what they have at their fingertips, We have always been there for our country and always will our oath of alliegence dies with us, but governments need to show us some goddam respect and start supplying us with what we need to do the job!!!

The Germans did not call it 'conscription', they called it 'Wehrpflicht' (duty to defend). This was abolished many years ago, as it was, after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the resulting collapse of the Soviet Union, no longer seen as necessary and it was also horrendously expensive. It's not just the pay for each soldier, but you need an entire military infrastructure: Accommodation, food, administration, medical services, etc, etc etc. You also need to provide uniforms and military hardware. Then you need to make sure that no individual with sinister intend will join. You wouldn't want to give a rifle with life ammo to anyone who supports any extremist group, would you? To reinstate any form of obligatory military, or otherwise, conscription-like entity would not only cost a fortune, but oodles of planning and the necessary personnel, but Mr Sunak does it all via TikTok 🙂

All the middle classes claiming it bonkers because they live in a secure bubble. Look outside that bubble identify the anti social behaviour identity the disadvantage kids who have no security and stability at home they desperately need guidance and direction. This opportunity could potentially stop another drifter joining gangs selling drugs to more middle classes and ending up dead. Giving opportunity to young people who might not want to go to university or college is a must they will gain much needed confidence motivation and support new skills.
