If you're struggling to put together outfits it's often because you're missing some key wardrobe basics so today I wanted to try and break these pieces down and give you examples of what my wardrobe essentials look like. Of course everyone's wardrobe staples will look different because it depends on your personal style and your lifestyle but once you have a clearer picture of what you may be missing your wardrobe will work so much harder for you - promise! I use Pinterest also to come up with outfits I like. I save the outfits I like and then I go in my closet and re-create them.

I agree with most of your choices. What I never in my life would wear or have worn are t-shirts or sweatshirts with a text or face or whatever. To me it looks cheap or made for teens.

I relate to the sunglasses. I've had Karen Walker tortoiseshell wayfarer sunnies for 10 years. They are my best purchases ever as I still love them and get complimented almost every time I wear them - and they are prescription so the only sunglasses I have. Cost me $1200 but worth every cent - cost per wear would be less than 1c.

Love the try-on’s, love to see more. And I also mainly start from the bottom of the outfit, unless I build it around like a stand out piece like an amazing dress or one of my vintage silk kimono’s… great video all over 😊

Intrigued by the idea/hadn't heard this approach before of: 3 outfits easily createable & accessible in wardrobe, for any of the key contexts of my life. I do have a nice collection of basics but i've tended to organize old school, with trousers together, blouses together etc. I also like that you didn't speak to a specific style or colour, but more a general item. The minimalist trend of last few years has been about 'neutral' basics, which i like, but I find the 'right' colour for me can sometimes be even more versatile, and less boring. It becomes like a signature 'neutral' that everything else is built around.

I really appreciate how you addressed basics that appeal to your own personal style. For years blazers have weren’t really my thing, but now I really enjoy them. And I get them in the styles I like. But I also love other things and it’s fun to mix and match. I like what you said about costs, I have a faux pink shearling long coat and I love wearing it in winter. It’s nice to break up all the black, gray, and neutral.

hi dear i agree with you i'm not a blazer woman i only have 1 cream color and i don't wear too much.but im thingking to add 1 black color so i have options for formal occasions only.but everyday im more casual sometimes feminine styles.

For me wardrobe essentials is basics and then a few ethnic pieces to mix n show my heritage. It also makes it unique for me. May be not too in ur face but stilla subtle nod.

Hope you're ok with all the flooding in Auckland. The rain seems to be relentless! Love your leather trench - so cool! My problem is I live in a hot climate, but I love winter wear, so I have every jacket option under the sun, yet wear the same pair of shorts (I have multiples) with different t-shirts and Birkenstocks for 6 months of the year. I don't get to wear most of my shoe/boot collection because it's too hot 🤣🤣🤣

That’s such a great thought, not everyone’s essentials are the same. I have little use for these “must-haves” that always show up on such lists: jeans, denim shirts/jackets/skirts, black trousers, black tops, LBD’s. I don’t really like or wear denim (except for white jeans, occasionally), or wear black near my face or dominating my outfits, although I do have some black items. I don’t agree that “black goes with everything”, I think it really doesn’t go with colors at all, it sucks the life out of them (it’s ok with white). My favorite, white, really does go with everything. I also like navy as “my black”. I look terrible in black clothes near my face, people constantly ask if I’m not well when I wear it! I’m just naturally very pale, too pale probably, but I want to protect my skin from harmful sunlight, the risk of skin cancer in my family is just too high. My Dad is always having skin cancers removed. I just talked him into getting another weird spot on his face checked - yes, it was cancerous again and had to be immediately removed. My Mom has already died, but their generation didn’t understand the risks of sun exposure and sunscreens weren’t really available. We had “suntan lotions”, but they were just moisturizers, until around 1980, when I started wearing sunscreens daily. Dermatologists were “treating” skin problems with tanning booths when I was a kid.

I must say this has been the most informative video that I've seen that makes sense! Thanks for this. I work in a group home setting, so a lot of what I'd like to wear wouldn't be suitable, therefore, I need to find a style that will. My wardrobe does not work and has not worked for a long time. This video has given me a lot to think about. Thanks again.

Glad you talked about the basic blazer because it’s not me I have one black one and I never wear it. I live in a very warm desert in California and the only thing I can wear is linen and lightweight sweaters. We never wear jackets much here I wear long duster’s, that are of a linen material. Very lightweight.
My white silk, two-pocket, button-front shirt is the most-worn garment in my wardrobe. It’s so comfortable and goes with everything, almost year-round (I switch to a no-iron linen equivalent during the dog days of summer). After that, my white silk knitted tops/tees are the next frequently worn items. I just got a stretch-silk button-front version as an alternate to my two-pocket one. I don’t always wear white tops, but I wear them a lot (half the time?) and they’ve become almost a style trademark for me over the decades. I also love my white and taupe cotton knit slim trousers and my silk cargo trousers, and wear them a lot. My most-worn bottoms, though, are silk skirts from Quince or simple silk dresses. I’m really a dress/skirt gal, always have been, and started wearing silk when I developed skin allergies to synthetics. The comfort of this “Queen of Fabrics” is addicting.

Hold up! I maybe having an elderly moment because I trying to remember these cargos jean at 2:32 joining your closet, these look so great on you. I want to order them but got to figure out sizing because I am 5.5 and I want my pants long enough for heels but not too long and they have choice of regular, tall and petite. Have you been holding out on me or something because that white 3:48 crossbody bag I need some details. I really appreciated the pdf download for my records; this will be interesting to see how I can use it because you know I have a lot of everything. Yeah, I have various pairs of shades collected through the years but I don't go extreme in the frames as we are seeing from some influencers. It was really a great seeing you actually also showing us your examples of pointers you were speaking on I see you added some pieces that really sparking up that wardrobe, me likey. Teehee. I just today bought a few things (snuck in some free time) to add to my wardrobe basically some basics today. I just became a grandma to the second power this week with an additional grandchild he came in 8.1 lbs and 20 inches his sister just turn 12 in January, and we hung out while they still at hospital. So been offline for a bit. Balenciaga has been cancelled here in the states over a campaign inclusion of children that was questionable. I like how you handle the subject matter on essentials and watching the greenery reacting to the outdoor rain was very pleasing indeed looking out your window as a backdrop. Video ended abruptly. I love cotton and linen shirts, but I won’t wear them unless I iron them well first. I’ve noticed that I tend to skip over the shirts (and dresses/bottoms) made of these fabrics because I don’t want to have to iron them when the weather is too hot. My no-iron linen shirt gets the most wear, I wish I could find this option more, in dresses, too.
I love silk slip dresses, but I need one-inch, or so, shoulder straps to hide my bra straps, strapless bras aren’t an option that I can wear. I suppose I mean tank dress, really.
I recently retired and love to wear button down shirts untucked over jeans or capris. However I find that if I have to iron something I will rarely wear it. So I have collected a number of no iron shirts in a variety of colors. This makes it easy to put together a comfortable stylish outfit to wear for running errands, shopping, or out to eat.
Yes I'm not much of a fan of ironing but I def don't mind steaming :)
I live in California but I work graveyard so I have to leave my house in 38 degree temperatures. I definitely use coats.

I have a lot of blazers. They are hanging in the guest bedroom closet. So I need to switch them around. We did got out to eat with my daughter and some of her family. I wore my dark wash Levi bootcut jeans and a cashmere sweater. If I had my blazers in my closet I could have worn one of them. But. It was chilly so I wore my moto jacket. It was okay. But I forgot to wear a necklace with my sweater. I meant to, but I ran out of time. And I didn’t want to get into and argument with my husband to give me five minutes to find one to wear. But it was okay. It was just a plain sweater. I could have one of my white button ups and a blazer. We really weren’t outside that long. So I could have worn one of them. I think I have at least four in my closet. I just never pick them to wear. But I will start. What’s easier than a white shirt and a blazer?
