Making Tracks 2022 fellow Shahab Azinmehr introduces his instrument, the tar, and explains some of the natural materials it is constructed from.
Tar, setar, santur, ney, barbat, and kamancheh are Iranian classical instruments that are used in performing Iranian classical repertoire. The main Iranian classical repertoire is radif, which is a collection of many old melodic figures preserved through many generations by oral tradition. These melodies models are organized in a number of different multi-modal systems called dastgah. Iranian classical music is a rich and complex art form that has been preserved over many generations. Today, it continues to evolve and adapt to new influences and collaborations with other musical genres, making it a truly unique and important part of the world's music heritage.
