- Rumoured to be the descendants of Alexander the Great, the Kalash people have in fact inhabited northern Pakistan's Chitral valley since long before the legendary conqueror came to the region. They uphold a rich cultural heritage, with polytheistic beliefs, seasonal festivals, and a variety of other traditions that are at odds with Pakistan's dominant Islam.
➔ Today, even as the the majestic peaks of the Hindu Kush mountains shield the Kalasha from the region's worst violence, their culture faces a variety of pressures: poverty, tourism, and Islamism are all contributing to the erosion of Kalash identity. Still, a dedicated group of Kalash advocates are fighting to keep their culture alive.
➔ In May 2013, director Iara Lee traveled to the Chitral valley to document the Kalash spring festival, Joshi. 'The Kalasha and the Crescent' uses the festival as an entry point into this vibrant community and the tough questions facing it.

what a beautiful documentary. thanks for showing such a vibrant culture. the thread of language (a mix of Hindi and Punjabi and Urdu) connects to such remote regions as these. they have such ingenuity in survival in such harsh conditions, hats off to them.
wish traveling to pakistan were easier for and indian in todays's world - they seem secular/tolerant and very honestly share their annoyance at too many cameras clicking too many of their children on the streets, but don't come off as menacing. chitral valley is so colorful and they add to it, and deserve any help possible.

Watching a documentary on them from the year 1976 and comparing it to the current potrayl in this video, I totally feel grieved. They used to practise free Islam, were much happier and doing well for themselves. It burdened my heart to know that 'many of them committed suicide in order to refrain from converting into Islam'. How I wish I could do something for them sitting in the neighbouring country.

Similar culture exists in Nepal as well but is heavily influenced by Hinduism. Problem with that part is that islam has completely changed the tradition but not in Nepal

Well personally I do agree with you. I have no doubt that the custom, tradition and culture of Kalasha community resembles with Us (Himachal Pradesh )and have common tree of oldest tribes (ARYANS -----Vedic Culture) . And even in the far upper Mountains part of Kashmir, UttaraKhand and Nepal have the same culture which is not like of 1000 years, But almost 5000 years Back. But offcourse for us proof is there in terms of written literature as the oldest written sacred Text in world is RIGVEDA around 1200---1500 Bc. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rigveda

Absolutely a spectacular film. I'm left questioning whether cultural preservation and missions (not just the religious or forceful type) are mutually exclusive. Why must we all be the same? How would we be able to enjoy the beautiful culture, rich in color, song and dance, if the Kalashis all dressed in the typical drab blues and greys of Western culture?

Recent-***FLOODS IN KALASH-***very very hard times. So sorry and sad to hear this. But I know assistance and relief is on its way. For people, animals, food, water, medical and homes. Attention is heard. So many big natural disasters, partly man made in some places by companies moving the water tables and taking out trees and creating a big imbalance in the ecosystems and water levels. Also nature is big this year in heat and storms and earthquakes. Beautiful cinematography, with a script presenting a depth of understanding that is much needed in the west.
One indirect way to convert is to not allow/prevent financial growth for them in such areas, not creating autonomous areas for them. Eventually due to poverty they themselves will think of conversion. That way snake is killed and stick is not broken too.

I’m from Uttarakhand state in India ( Himalayan state ) I’m kumaoni and these like the culture practices are a lot similar to us . To be honest more simlilar to Himachal and Uttarakhand both . If you talk about relating their dress is very similar to ( the one they wore in the head going backwards ) kinnauri. Even though Kinnauris got Buddhist elements mixed but it’s too much similar to the cultures of Himachal and Uttarakhand of India

Kalash are an Aryan *Indo-Iranian* people with no Greek ethnic admixture, it's been widely dismissed that they're of any Greek admixture. So it's really a myth that these people are decendants of Alexander the great. Speaking genetics, the Kalash lack typical Greek Haplogroups.
